Wide angle X-ray diffraction investigation of crystal orientation in miscible blend of poly(ε-caprolactone)/poly(vinyl chloride) crystallized under strain

Differentiation of Electric Response in Highly Oriented Regioregular Poly(3-hexylthiophene) under Anisotropic Strain

Exploring flexible and stretchable conjugated polymer devices has garnered particular attention. This work provides a new technology to improve the electrical properties in a stretching process by skillfully assisting the anisotropic tensile properties of oriented regioregular poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) films. Oriented P3HT films with a long-range ordered chain alignment are fabricated, and stretchable conducting films are achieved by laminating oriented P3HT films and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) layers. The differentiation of electrical response is identified when the film is under different stretching directions. The electrical stability of the P3HT film during the stretching process is much better when the stretching direction is perpendicular than along the c-axis of the P3HT film. Moreover, the multiscale structure evolution of P3HT films under stretching is explored. The technology based on oriented conductive polymers under anisotropic stretching condition provides not only a new strategy for fabricating high-quality stretchable devices but also theoretical guidance for studying the mechanical properties for the aligned conjugated film.

Orientation of Poly(ε-caprolactone) in Its Poly(vinyl chloride) Blends Crystallized under Strain: The Role of Strain Rate

The blends of high and low molecular weights poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) with poly(vinyl chloride (PVC) were prepared. The samples before and after the crystallization of PCL were uniaxially stretched to different draw ratios. The orientation features of PCL in a stretched crystalline PCL/PVC blend and crystallized from the amorphous PCL/PVC blends under varied strains were studied by wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD) diffraction. It was found that a uniaxial stretching of crystalline PCL/PVC blend with high molecular weight PCL results in the c-axis orientation along the stretching direction, as is usually done for the PCL bulk sample. For the stretched amorphous PCL/PVC blend samples, the crystallization of high molecular weight PCL in the blends under a draw ratio of λ = 3 with a strain rate of 6 mm/min leads to a ring-fiber orientation. In the samples with draw ratios of λ = 4 and 5, the uniaxial orientation of a-, b-, and c-axes along the strain direction coexist after crystallization of high molecular weight PCL. With a draw ratio of λ = 6, mainly the b-axis orientation of high molecular weight PCL is identified. For the low molecular weight PCL, on the contrary, the ring-fiber and a-axis orientations coexist under a draw ratio of λ = 3. The a-axis orientation decreases with the increase of draw ratio. When the λ reaches 5, only a poorly oriented ring-fiber pattern has been recognized. These results are different from the similar samples stretched at a higher strain rate as reported in the literatures and demonstrate the important role of strain rate on the crystallization behavior of PCL in its blend with PVC under strain.

Influence of the Solidification Process on the Mechanical Properties of Solid-State Drawn PCL/Sepiolite Nanocomposite Tapes

In this research, poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) was melt-mixed with sepiolite nanoclays in a twin-screw extruder. In a subsequent step, the extruded films were drawn in the solid state to highly oriented nanocomposite films or tapes. A twin-screw extruder equipped with a Sultzer mixer for improved mixing in combination with a bench top drawing unit was used to prepare oriented nanocomposite tapes of different sepiolite loading and draw ratios. In order to study the influence of the solidification step on the drawability of the materials, different cooling procedures were applied prior to drawing. Optical microscopy images showed that slow or fast solidification using different chill rolls settings (open or closed) for the cast films resulted in different morphological conditions for subsequent drawing. The addition of sepiolite nanofillers led to nucleation and faster crystallization kinetics and oriented tapes which deformed by homogenous deformation rather than necking. The addition of sepiolite significantly improved the mechanical properties of both undrawn and drawn PCL tapes and Young’s modulus (1.5 GPa) and tensile strength (360 MPa) for composites based on 4 wt% sepiolite were among the highest ever reported for PCL nanocomposites. Interestingly, samples cooled with open chill rolls (slow crystallization) showed the highest modulus while solidification with closed rolls (fast crystallization) showed the highest tensile strength after drawing.

Double Crystalline Multiblock Copolymers with Controlling Microstructure for High Shape Memory Fixity and Recovery

The shape memory performance of double crystalline poly(butylene succinate)-co-poly(ε-caprolactone) (PBS-co-PCL) multiblock copolymers with controlling microstructure was studied, and the corresponding microstructure origin was further quantitatively analyzed by wide and small-angle X-ray scattering (WAXS and SAXS) experiments. It was found that the multiblock copolymer with higher PCL content, proper deformation strain, and inhibited crystallization of PBS (lower crystallinity and smaller crystal size, which could be realized by quenching from the melt) would exhibit better shape memory fixity and recovery performance. WAXS and SAXS results revealed that the shape fixity ratio (R_f) was closely related with the relative crystallinity of the PCL component, while the shape recovery ratio (R_r) strongly relied on the deformation and recovery behavior of the PBS and PCL components that changed along with compositions and deformation strains. For the copolymer with higher PCL content (BS₃₀CL₇₀), at the lower deformation strain (0% ∼ 90%), both the PBS and PCL components after recovery had no orientation (labeled as stage I), resulting in almost complete recovery; with the deformation strain increasing (90% ∼ 200%), it was the irreversible deformation of the PCL component that largely took responsibility for the decreased R_r (stage II). On the contrary, when the PCL content decreased to 50 wt % (BS₅₀CL₅₀), stage I (0% ∼ 50%) and stage II (50% ∼ 100%) appeared in much lower strains; with the deformation strain increasing (100% ∼ 200%), the irreversible deformation of both PBS and PCL components was mainly responsible for the further reduction of R_r (stage III). It could exhibit excellent shape memory performance for biodegradable double crystalline multiblock copolymers by controlling the composition, deformation strain, and crystallization, which might have wide application prospects in biomedical areas.

Self-assembled supramolecular polymers with tailorable properties that enhance cell attachment and proliferation

Self-assembled supramolecular scaffolds, a combination of noncovalent interactions within a biocompatible polymer substrate, can be used for efficient construction of highly-controlled self-organizing hierarchical structures; these newly-developed biomaterials exhibit excellent mechanical properties, tunable surface hydrophilicity, low cytotoxicity and high biodegradability, making them highly attractive for tissue engineering and regenerative medicine applications. Herein, we demonstrate a novel supramolecular poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) containing self-complementary sextuple hydrogen-bonded uracil-diamidopyridine (U-DPy) moieties, which undergoes spontaneous self-assembly to form supramolecular polymer networks. Inclusion of various U-DPy contents enhanced the mechanical strength and viscosities of the resulting materials by up to two orders of magnitude compared to control PCL. Surface wettability and morphological studies confirmed physically-crosslinked films can be readily tailored to provide the desired surface properties. Cell viability assays indicated the excellent in vitro biocompatibility of U-DPy-functionalized substrates and indicate the potential of these materials for various biomedical applications. More importantly, mouse fibroblast NIH/3T3 cells cultured on these substrates displayed a more elongated cell morphology and had substantially higher cell densities than cells seeded on control PCL substrate, which indicates that introduction of U-DPy moieties into polymer matrixes could be used to create tissue culture surfaces that enhance cell attachment and proliferation. This new system is suggested as a potential route towards the practical realization of next-generation tissue-engineering scaffolds.

STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE

In this study, we report a significant breakthrough in development of self-assembled supramolecular polymers to form well-defined scaffolds through self-complementary hydrogen-bonding interactions. These newly developed materials exhibited extremely good mechanical properties, fine-tunable hydrophilic characteristics and excellent biocompatibility due to hydrogen-bond-induced physical cross-linking. Importantly, cell adhesion and proliferation assays indicated that these substrates efficiently promoted the growth of mouse embryonic fibroblasts NIH/3T3 cells in vitro. Thus, this finding provides a simple and effective route for the development of next-generation tissue-engineering scaffolds that have improved mechanical properties, increased surface hydrophilicity and can enhance the growth and biological activity of adherent cells.

Superior shape memory properties and microstructure evolution of poly(ether-b-amide12) elastomer enhanced by poly(ε-caprolactone)

While the recovery ratio of PEBA decreases marginally with PCL content, the maximum recovery stresses (σ_max) increase greatly despite of the deformation temperature, indicating an enhancement of the recovery stress.
