Abstract
A facile, one-pot, and solvent-free synthesis was developed to obtain a thermally stable chitosan biopolymer. The bifunctional isocyanate by interaction with chitosan formed urea and urethane bonds between chitosan chains. Subsequently, the designed chemistry facilitated the formation of carbodiimide bonds between chitosan chains via dehydration of the urea bond. The modified chitosan was proved to be superior in thermal properties and could be used as a thermally stable bio-filler. This synthetic methodology is a facile route to achieve improved thermal stability in biopolymers.

Abstract
The present study is based on the synthesis of a novel hybrid biosorbent using 1,2-cyclohexylenedinitrilotetraacetic acid modified crosslinked chitosan and amino-thiocarbamate moiety functionalized sodium alginate (CDTA-CS/TSC-CA). The fabricated sorbent was employed to investigate the efficient recovery of Cu(II) from aqueous media. CDTA-CS/TSC-CA was characterized using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). Analysis confirmed the successful modification of both biopolymers and subsequent loading of Cu(II) ions. CDTA-CS/TSC-CA was casted in the form of hydrogel beads having different CDTA-CS to TSC-CA mass ratios i.e., 10.0-40.0% by mass. The hydrogel beads 4CDTA-CS/TSC-CA with CDTA-CS/TSC-CA mass ratio of 40.0% was found most effective for copper sorption. Equilibrium sorption results showed that initial concentration of copper, medium pH, contact time, sorbent dosage and temperature influenced the sorption capacity (qe). Rate of sorption data was interpreted using different kinetic models and found best fitted with pseudo second order rate expression (R2 ≈ 0.99), illustrating that the rate determining step includes the electron density transfer from sorbent coordination sites to central copper ions. Crank's RIDE equation and Elovich chemisorption model (ECM) revealed the presence of two sorption phases, initially rapid sorption followed by comparatively a slow uptake. Equilibrium sorption data was well depicted by Langmuir model and maximum monolayer adsorption capacity (qm) was computed as 276.53 mg·g-1 at 298 K. Standard Gibbs free energy change, ∆G° (-19.99, -20.18 and -20.36 kJ/ mol), standard enthalpy change, ∆H° (-8.95 kJmol) and standard entropy change, ∆S° (0.04 kJ/mol K-1) values suggested that the adsorption process is spontaneous and exothermic. Hence, 4CDTA-CS/TSC-CA was found efficient biosorbent for copper removal from its dilute effluents.

Abstract
We report an efficient and easy-to-implement waterborne sol-gel process for the synthesis of nanometric organosilica particles. In this process, tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) and 3-(methacryloxy)propyl trimethoxy silane (γ-MPS), employed as silica sources, were heterogeneously delivered in an aqueous solution of l-arginine, a basic amino acid used as a catalyst, from a top organic layer. Co-condensation of TEOS with γ-MPS led to the formation of organosilica particles with diameters between 30 and 230 nm when increasing the γ-MPS content from 0 to 10.1 mol % in the silica source. Nitrogen sorption analyses confirmed the microporous nature of the obtained particles after calcination. The Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface areas increased from 27 (before calcination) to 684 m2 g-1 (after calcination) for the organosilica particles containing 10.1 mol % of γ-MPS. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and 29Si NMR were employed to analyze the chemical structure of the organosilica spheres and provide insight into the mechanism of particle formation. In the second part, hybrid organosilica particles with a core-shell morphology were synthesized through the combination of Pickering emulsion and the sol-gel process. γ-MPS emulsion droplets stabilized by tiny silica particles (formed in a separate step) were first generated and used as seeds to grow a silica shell on their surface through TEOS addition from the top organic layer. Transmission electron microscopy and pore size analyses of the resulting particles after calcination revealed a unique dual-porosity structure with a mesoporous inner core and a micro/mesoporous silica shell with ink-bottle-type pores.

Abstract
The biorelated degradability and clearance of siliceous nanomaterials have been questioned worldwide, since they are crucial prerequisites for the successful translation in clinics. Typically, the degradability and biocompatibility of mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) have been an ongoing discussion in research circles. The reason for such a concern is that approved pharmaceutical products must not accumulate in the human body, to prevent severe and unpredictable side-effects. Here, the biorelated degradability and clearance of silicon and silica nanoparticles (NPs) are comprehensively summarized. The influence of the size, morphology, surface area, pore size, and surface functional groups, to name a few, on the degradability of silicon and silica NPs is described. The noncovalent organic doping of silica and the covalent incorporation of either hydrolytically stable or redox- and enzymatically cleavable silsesquioxanes is then described for organosilica, bridged silsesquioxane (BS), and periodic mesoporous organosilica (PMO) NPs. Inorganically doped silica particles such as calcium-, iron-, manganese-, and zirconium-doped NPs, also have radically different hydrolytic stabilities. To conclude, the degradability and clearance timelines of various siliceous nanomaterials are compared and it is highlighted that researchers can select a specific nanomaterial in this large family according to the targeted applications and the required clearance kinetics.

Abstract
A facile and simple electrochemical immunoassay for ultrasensitive determination of streptomycin residues (STR) in food was designed by using nanogold-assembled mesoporous silica (GMSNs) as bionanolabels on a three-dimensional redox-active organosilica-functionalized sensing interface. To construct such a sensing interface, we initially synthesized organosilica colloids by using wet chemical method, and then utilized the prepared colloidal organosilica nanocomposites for the immobilization of monoclonal anti-STR antibodies on a glassy carbon electrode based on a sol-gel method. The bionanolabels were prepared based on coimmobilization of horseradish peroxidase (HRP) and STR-bovine serum albumin conjugates (STR-BSA) on the GMSNs. With a competitive-type immunoassay format, the assay toward STR analyte was carried out in pH 5.5 acetate acid buffer (ABS) by using redox-active organosilica nanocomposites as electron mediators, biofunctionalized GMSNs as traces, and hydrogen peroxide (H(2)O(2)) as enzyme substrate. Under optimal conditions, the reduction current of the electrochemical immunosensor decreased with the increase in STR level in the sample, and displayed a wide dynamic range of 0.05-50 ng mL(-1) with a low detection limit (LOD) of 5 pg mL(-1) at 3s(B). Intra- and interassay coefficients of variation were less than 8.7 and 9.3% for STR detection, respectively. In addition, the methodology was validated with STR spiked samples including honey, milk, kidney, and muscle, receiving a good correspondence with the results obtained from high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC).

Abstract
Robust hairy microspheres were conveniently synthesized through an "inside-out" protrusion approach consisting of a sol-gel reaction and a radical polymerization, from conventional organosilanes and vinyl monomers. Their hierarchical structures of hard cores and plastic hairs can be adjusted in terms of their sizes and compositions to impart various chemical and physical properties on their surfaces. These hairy microspheres can also be built into hairy surfaces with many useful functions, such as superhydrophobicity. This work opens up a new route for the synthesis of hierarchical particles and enriches the tool library of material and surface engineering.
