Atomistic simulation study of absorbed water influence on structure and properties of crosslinked epoxy resin

Molecular Dynamics Simulation of Hydrogels Based on Phosphorylcholine-Containing Copolymers for Soft Contact Lens Applications

The structure and dynamics of copolymers of 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) with 2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine (MPC) were studied by molecular dynamics simulations. In total, 20 systems were analyzed. They differed in numerical fractions of the MPC in the copolymer chain, equal to 0.26 and 0.74, in the sequence of mers, block and random, and the water content, from 0 to 60% by mass. HEMA side chains proved relatively rigid and stable in all considered configurations. MPC side chains, in contrast, were mobile and flexible. Water substantially influenced their dynamics. The copolymer swelling caused by water resulted in diffusion channels, pronounced in highly hydrated systems. Water in the hydrates existed in two states: those that bond to the polymer chain and the free one; the latter was similar to bulk water but with a lower self-diffusion coefficient. The results proved that molecular dynamics simulations could facilitate the preliminary selection of the polymer materials for specific purposes before their synthesis.

Theoretical Study for Adsorption-Diffusion on H-MOR and Pyridine Pre-adsorbed H-MOR of Dimethyl Ether Carbonylation

For dimethyl ether (DME) carbonylation, pyridine pre-adsorbed hydrogen mordenite (H-MOR) is beneficial to prolonging the catalyst life. The adsorption and diffusion behaviors on periodic models H-AlMOR and H-AlMOR-Py were simulated. The simulation was based on Monte Carlo and molecular dynamics. The following conclusions were drawn from the simulation results. The adsorption stability of CO in 8-MR is increased, and the adsorption density of CO in 8-MR is more concentrated on H-AlMOR-Py. 8-MR is the main active site for DME carbonylation, so the introduction of pyridine would be beneficial for the main reaction. The adsorption distributions of methyl acetate (MA) (in 12-MR) and H₂O on H-AlMOR-Py are significantly decreased. It means the product MA and the byproduct H₂O are more easily desorbed on H-AlMOR-Py. For the mixed feed of DME carbonylation, the feed ratio (P_CO/P_DME) must reach 50:1 on H-AlMOR so that the reaction molar ratio can reach the theoretical value (N_CO/N_DME ≈ 1:1), while the feed ratio on H-AlMOR-Py is only up to 10:1. Thus, the feed ratio can be adjusted, and raw materials can reduce consumption. In conclusion, H-AlMOR-Py can improve the adsorption equilibrium of reactants CO and DME and increase the concentration of CO in 8-MR.

Determination of elastic constants of functionalized graphene-based epoxy nanocomposites: a molecular modeling and MD simulation study

Functionalization of graphene is the best way to create a high degree of dispersion and bonding to polymer matrix in order to obtain high performance composites. The effects of carboxyl (-COOH) functionalized graphene (FG) on the mechanical properties of its epoxy-based nanocomposites have been examined by molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. Simulations cells of nanocomposites with varying wt% of FG (1, 2, and 3 wt%) were constructed using Material Studio 6.0. The MD simulation findings of nanocomposites reveal that they have better mechanical properties such as elastic modulus, bulk modulus, shear modulus, and the Poisson's ratio than pure epoxy. Furthermore, the computational results of nanocomposites have been effectively confirmed with available experimental data. Therefore, the current MD simulation shows a decent computational sign for the existing experimental and simulation outcomes on mechanical properties of FG/epoxy nanocomposites.

The Effect of Cross-Linking Type on EPDM Elastomer Dynamics and Mechanical Properties: A Molecular Dynamics Simulation Study

The cross-linking structure of the Ethylene-propylene-diene monomer (EPDM) is made up of a number of cross-linking types, including carbon atoms from the main chain or monomer and ether crosslinks formed during degradation. Through molecular dynamic simulations, the contribution of each type of cross-linked structure to the dynamics and mechanical properties of EPDM, the study’s focus, were investigated. Cross-linking between the tertiary carbons of two main chains, cross-linking at the monomer’s unsaturated position, ether cross-linking after oxidation, and other combinations of target cross-linked carbon atoms from different positions, totaling eight types of cross-linked types, were mixed with EPDM free chains in a 1:1 ratio to form eight types of cross-linked EPDMs. These varieties of cross-linked EPDMs were then compared to an uncross-linked EPDM in terms of density, radius of gyration, free volume, mean square displacement, and uniaxial tensile stress-strain curves. It was found that the cross-linking was always proven to have a favorable influence on mechanical characteristics; however, the relaxation inhibition effect varied. The cross-linking between the diene monomer at the C9 position resulted in a more flexible molecular shape and was more than double the free volume of the uncross-linked EPDM, resulting in an improved diffusion ability. The ether cross-linking produced by the oxidation of the side chain cross-linking improved the positive contribution to stiffness and enhanced the inhibitory impact on diffusion properties, whereas the main chain cross-linking had the opposite effect. The research presented in this study leads to a better knowledge of the microscopic aspects underlying EPDM performance.

Modelling of Environmental Ageing of Polymers and Polymer Composites-Modular and Multiscale Methods

Service lifetimes of polymers and polymer composites are impacted by environmental ageing. The validation of new composites and their environmental durability involves costly testing programs, thus calling for more affordable and safe alternatives, and modelling is seen as such an alternative. The state-of-the-art models are systematized in this work. The review offers a comprehensive overview of the modular and multiscale modelling approaches. These approaches provide means to predict the environmental ageing and degradation of polymers and polymer composites. Furthermore, the systematization of methods and models presented herein leads to a deeper and reliable understanding of the physical and chemical principles of environmental ageing. As a result, it provides better confidence in the modelling methods for predicting the environmental durability of polymeric materials and fibre-reinforced composites.

Molecular Dynamics Investigation of the Thermo-Mechanical Properties of the Moisture Invaded and Cross-Linked Epoxy System

In spite of a high market share of plastic IC packaging, there are still reliability issues, especially for the effects of moisture. The mechanism between moisture and epoxy polymer is still obscure. A multi-step cross-linking approach was used to mimic the cross-linking process between the DGEBA resin and JEFFAMINE^®-D230 agent. Based on the molecular dynamics method, the thermo-mechanical properties and microstructure of epoxy polymer were analyzed. In this paper, the degree of cross-linking ranged from 0% to 85.4% and the moisture concentration ranged from 0 wt.% to 12 wt.%. The hydrogen bonds were investigated in the moisture invaded epoxy polymer. Although most of the hydrogen bonds were related to water molecules, the hydrogen bonds between the inside of epoxy polymer were reduced only a little as the concentration of moisture increased. The diffusion coefficient of the water molecules was found to increase with the increase of moisture concentration. When the moisture concentration was larger than 12 wt.% or smaller than 1.6 wt.%, the diffusion coefficient was less affected by the epoxy polymer. In addition, the free volume and the thermal conductivity of the epoxy polymer were considered. It was found that the moisture could increase the thermal conductivity from 0.24 to 0.31 W/m/K, identifying a coupling relationship between moisture and thermal properties. Finally, the mechanical properties of epoxy polymer were analyzed by uniaxial tensile simulation. The COMPASS and DREIDING force fields were used during the uniaxial tensile simulation. A better result was achieved from the DREIDING force field compared with the experiment. The degree of cross-linking was positively correlated with mechanical properties. For the system with the largest degree of cross-linking of 85.4%, the Young's modulus was 2.134 ± 0.522 GPa and the yield strength was 0.081 ± 0.01 GPa. There were both plasticizing and anti-plasticizing effects when the water molecules entered the epoxy polymer. Both the Young's moduli and yield strength varied in a large range from 1.38 to 2.344 GPa and from 0.062 to 0.128 GPa, respectively.

Modular Paradigm for Composites: Modeling Hydrothermal Degradation of Glass Fibers

Fiber-reinforced composite materials are often used in structural applications in humid, marine, and offshore environments. Superior mechanical properties are compromised by environmental ageing and hydrolytic degradation. Glass fibers are the most broadly used type of fiber reinforcement to date. However, they are also most severely affected by environmental degradation. The glass fiber degradation rates depend on: (1) glass formulation; (2) environmental factors: pH, T, stress; (3) sizing; (4) matrix polymer; (5) fiber orientation and composite layup. In this short review (communication), seven modules within the Modular Paradigm are reviewed and systematized. These modeling tools, encompassing both trivial and advanced formulas, enable the prediction of the environmental ageing of glass fibers, including the kinetics of mass loss, fiber radius reduction, environmental crack growth and loss of strength. The modeling toolbox is of use for both industry and academia, and the Modular Paradigm could become a valuable tool for such scenarios as lifetime prediction and the accelerated testing of fiber-reinforced composite materials.

Water Dissolved in a Variety of Polymers Studied by Molecular Dynamics Simulation and a Theory of Solutions

The performance of a polymer medium as a separation membrane is determined by the dissolution free energy ΔG and diffusion coefficient D of the permeant. In this work, ΔG and D of water are investigated with all-atom molecular dynamics simulation in a wide variety of polymer species in the amorphous state. The computed ΔG is shown to agree well with the experimental value for linear homopolymers, and the degrees of polymerization of the homopolymers do not affect ΔG when they are beyond ∼10. The copolymers of ethylene-vinylidene difluoride, ethylene-vinyl acetate, and ethylene-acrylamide are then examined by changing the repeating patterns of the constituent monomers in both the periodic and graft forms. It is found that ΔG is determined primarily by the overall compositions of the monomers and is not affected by the copolymerization topology (periodic or graft). The hydrophobicity of the copolymer is enhanced, furthermore, when the hydrophobicity and hydrophilicity of the ethylene and non-ethylene parts are well contrasted and those parts are fragmented along the polymer chain. According to the computed D, the diffusivity of water tends to be larger when the (co)polymer is more hydrophobic and ΔG is more positive. D is actually seen to vary by orders of magnitude with the polymer structures, while the effect of the polymer species on the water permeation is stronger for ΔG than for D.

Exploring secondary interactions and the role of temperature in moisture-contaminated polymer networks through molecular simulations

Leveraging the state of absorbed moisture within a polymer network to identify physical and chemical features of the host material is predicated upon a clear understanding of the interaction between the polymer and a penetrant water molecule; an understanding that has remained elusive. Recent work has revealed that a novel damage detection method that exploits the very low baseline levels of water typically found in polymer matrix composites (PMC) may be a valuable tool in the composite NDE arsenal, provided that a clear understanding of polymer-water interaction can be obtained. Precise detection, location, and possible quantification of the extent of damage can be performed by characterizing the physical and chemical states of moisture present in an in-service PMC. Composite structures have a locally elevated dielectric constant near the damage sites due to a higher fraction of bulk ("free") water, which has a higher dielectric constant when compared to water molecules bound to the polymer network through secondary bonding interactions. In this study, we aim to get a clear atomistic scale picture of the interactions which drive the dielectric signature variations necessary for tracking damage. Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulations were used to explore the effect of temperature on the state of moisture in two epoxy matrices with identical chemical constituents but different morphologies. The motivation was to understand whether higher polarity binds a greater fraction of moisture even at higher temperatures, leading to suppressed dielectric activity. Consequently, the influence of secondary bonding interactions was investigated to understand the impact of temperature on the absorbed water molecules in a composite epoxy matrix.

Moisture Ingress at the Molecular Scale in Hygrothermal Aging of Fiber-Epoxy Interfaces

Almost all applications of carbon fiber reinforced composites are susceptible to water aging, either via ambient humidity or through direct exposure to liquid water environments. Although the impacts of water aging in composites can be readily quantified via experimental efforts, details regarding the mechanisms of moisture ingress and aging, particularly at the incipient stages of aging under hygrothermal conditions, have proven challenging to resolve using experimental techniques alone. A deeper understanding of the factors that drive incipient moisture ingress during aging is required for more targeted approaches to combat water aging. Here, molecular dynamics simulations of a novel epoxy/carbon fiber interface exposed to liquid water under hygrothermal conditions are used to elucidate molecular details of the moisture ingress mechanisms at the incipient stages of the aging process. Remarkably, the simulations show that the fiber-matrix interface is not vulnerable to a moisture-wicking type of incipient water ingress and does not readily flood in these early stages of water aging. Instead, water is preferentially absorbed via the matrix-water interface, an ingress pathway that is facilitated by the dynamic mobility of polymer chains at this interface. These chains present electronegative sites that can capture water molecules and provide a conduit to transiently exposed pores and channels on the polymer surface, which creates a presoaked staging reservoir for subsequent deeper ingress into the composite. Characterization of the absorbed water is according to hydrogen bonding to the matrix, and the distributions and transport behavior of these waters are consistent with experimental observations. This work introduces new insights regarding the molecular-level details of moisture ingress and spatial distribution of water in these materials during hygrothermal aging, informing future design directions for extending both the service life and shelf life of next-generation composites.

A novel degradation mechanism of the elastic modulus of wet polymer substrates under nanoindentation

We demonstrated that the formation and solidification of a continuous confined water film played a very important role in changing the elastic modulus of the wet polymer substrate in a nanoindentation process by a coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulation of this process. It was found that as the water content increased, the elastic modulus of the wet polymer substrate showed a non-monotonic change. Relative to the dry polymer substrate, the elastic modulus of the wet polymer first decreased. This is because the appearance of a confined water film caused the force between the polymer substrate and the indenter to change from repulsion to attraction. Subsequently, as the confined water film gradually solidified and then weakened, the elastic modulus of the wet polymer slowly increased and then rapidly increased due to a large number of interstitial water molecules gradually penetrating the polymer substrate. Therefore, it is unreasonable to explain the wet polymer degradation during nanoindentation only from the plasticization and anti-plasticization effects based on the hydrogen bond breaking and formation during stretching. The above-mentioned results will help to more comprehensively understand the degradation mechanism of the polymers' encounter with water, thus promoting further practical applications for polymers.

Antiplasticization of Polymer Materials: Structural Aspects and Effects on Mechanical and Diffusion-Controlled Properties

Antiplasticization of glassy polymers, arising from the addition of small amounts of plasticizer, was examined to highlight the developments that have taken place over the last few decades, aiming to fill gaps of knowledge in the large number of disjointed publications. The analysis includes the role of polymer/plasticizer molecular interactions and the conditions leading to the cross-over from antiplasticization to plasticization. This was based on molecular dynamics considerations of thermal transitions and related relaxation spectra, alongside the deviation of free volumes from the additivity rule. Useful insights were gained from an analysis of data on molecular glasses, including the implications of the glass fragility concept. The effects of molecular packing resulting from antiplasticization are also discussed in the context of physical ageing. These include considerations on the effects on mechanical properties and diffusion-controlled behaviour. Some peculiar features of antiplasticization regarding changes in Tg were probed and the effects of water were examined, both as a single component and in combination with other plasticizers to illustrate the role of intermolecular forces. The analysis has also brought to light the shortcomings of existing theories for disregarding the dual cross-over from antiplasticization to plasticization with respect to modulus variation with temperature and for not addressing failure related properties, such as yielding, crazing and fracture toughness.

Corrosion protection and thermal and mechanical properties for epoxy–thiol–imidazole systems of improved performance

Epoxy–thiol–imidazole system is promising for microelectronic packaging areas, such as underfills and low-temperature fast curing adhesives, but there is little knowledge on the corrosion resistance of this system. In this article, the anticorrosion and thermal and mechanical properties were characterized by theoretical and experimental methods and were understood from a fundamental perspective of structure. The cure behaviors were evaluated by differential scanning calorimeter. The mechanical and thermal properties were characterized by dynamic mechanical, thermomechanical, and thermos-gravimetric methods. The water absorption process was monitored using gravimetric measurement. Results show that among compositions of variable thiol–epoxy molar ratios, the one with ratio 0.25 has the best anticorrosion property and improved mechanical property, as well as good water resistance at room temperature. Both the average tensile strength and modulus increased initially and then declined with the addition of thiol part, while the average peel strength increased to above thrice the value of that of neat epoxy–imidazole system for thiol–epoxy 1:1 system.

Understanding Free Volume Characteristics of Ethylene-Propylene-Diene Monomer (EPDM) through Molecular Dynamics Simulations

Understanding the underlying processes associated with the viscoelasticity performance of ethylene-propylene-diene monomer (EPDM) during its service life is essential for assessing and predicting its waterproofing performance in underground infrastructure. The viscoelasticity of the polymer is closely related to its free volume, and both of these properties depend on multiple factors, such as temperature, stress magnitude, and strain level. To explore the fundamental viscoelastic behavior of EPDM using free volume as a proxy for viscoelasticity, this article investigates the influence of temperature, stress magnitude, and strain level, as well as their combined effect, on the free volume through molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. An EPDM cross-linked molecular model was built and verified by comparing the simulation values of glass transition temperature, mechanical properties, and gas diffusivity with the experimental results reported in the literature. Then, the dependence of EPDM's fractional free volume on temperature, strain, and their combined effect was investigated via MD simulations, on the basis of which the applicability of various superposition principles was also evaluated.

Characteristics of water absorption in amine-cured epoxy networks: a molecular simulation and experimental study

Moisture corrosion of cured epoxy resins seriously affects the durability of epoxy products and has been a serious issue in scientific and engineering fields. In this study, a series of cured epoxy resins with different structures were prepared by tuning their curing conversion in both experimental and simulation methods. In experiments, the equilibrium water content and the diffusion coefficient of amine-cured epoxy resins were measured by gravimetric measurement. The interaction between water molecules and epoxy network was investigated by time-resolved FTIR, difference spectroscopy and 2D correlation spectroscopy. In simulation, the hydrogen bonds, the mobility of hydroxypropyl ether groups and water molecules, and the free volume with its distributions were analyzed. Five types of water molecules were intuitively observed in this study; free volume had a stronger influence on equilibrium water content than polarity in the bifunctional epoxy/amine system, and the increase in the diffusion coefficient was considered as the result of reduction in motion resistance and an increase in channels for the motion of water molecules.

Near-Infrared Spectroscopic Method for Monitoring Water Content in Epoxy Resins and Fiber-Reinforced Composites

Monitoring water content and predicting the water-induced drop in strength of fiber-reinforced composites are of great importance for the oil and gas and marine industries. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopic methods are broadly available and often used for process and quality control in industrial applications. A benefit of using such spectroscopic methods over the conventional gravimetric analysis is the possibility to deduce the mass of an absolutely dry material and subsequently the true water content, which is an important indicator of water content-dependent properties. The objective of this study is to develop an efficient and detailed method for estimating the water content in epoxy resins and fiber-reinforced composites. In this study, Fourier transform near-infrared (FT-NIR) spectroscopy was applied to measure the water content of amine-epoxy neat resin. The method was developed and successfully extended to glass fiber-reinforced composite materials. Based on extensive measurements of neat resin and composite samples of varying water content and thickness, regression was performed, and the quantitative absorbance dependence on water content in the material was established. The mass of an absolutely dry resin was identified, and the true water content was obtained. The method was related to the Beer–Lambert law and explained in such terms. A detailed spectroscopic method for measuring water content in resins and fiber-reinforced composites was developed and described.

Molecular Mechanics of the Moisture Effect on Epoxy/Carbon Nanotube Nanocomposites

The strong structural integrity of polymer nanocomposite is influenced in the moist environment; but the fundamental mechanism is unclear, including the basis for the interactions between the absorbed water molecules and the structure, which prevents us from predicting the durability of its applications across multiple scales. In this research, a molecular dynamics model of the epoxy/single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) nanocomposite is constructed to explore the mechanism of the moisture effect, and an analysis of the molecular interactions is provided by focusing on the hydrogen bond (H-bond) network inside the nanocomposite structure. The simulations show that at low moisture concentration, the water molecules affect the molecular interactions by favorably forming the water-nanocomposite H-bonds and the small cluster, while at high concentration the water molecules predominantly form the water-water H-bonds and the large cluster. The water molecules in the epoxy matrix and the epoxy-SWCNT interface disrupt the molecular interactions and deteriorate the mechanical properties. Through identifying the link between the water molecules and the nanocomposite structure and properties, it is shown that the free volume in the nanocomposite is crucial for its structural integrity, which facilitates the moisture accumulation and the distinct material deteriorations. This study provides insights into the moisture-affected structure and properties of the nanocomposite from the nanoscale perspective, which contributes to the understanding of the nanocomposite long-term performance under the moisture effect.

Molecular dynamics simulation of effect of glycerol monostearate on amorphous polyethylene in the presence of water

Polyethylene (PE) is used widely as an electrical insulating material. However, the deterioration of its insulating ability is accelerated by exposure to a humid environment. To prevent the influence of water molecules, mixing 2,3-dihydroxypropyl octadecanoate-known as glycerol monostearate (GMS)-into PE has been proposed. However, the physical mechanism underlying the effect of GMS remains unclear. In the present study, the behavior of water molecules in amorphous PE with and without GMS molecule(s) was investigated in terms of diffusion and clustering using molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. Analyzing the mean square displacement (MSD), diffusion coefficient and radial distribution function (RDF) of the water molecules revealed that GMS contributed to suppressing the diffusion and dispersion of water molecules. Furthermore, it was demonstrated that, in the case of 4 wt% GMS and less than 2 wt% water, GMS contributes to reducing the diffusion coefficient of water molecules but does not change the glass transition temperature (T _g) of the system drastically.

CNT/polymer interface in polymeric composites and its sensitivity study at different environments

The environmental durability of polymer based composites has always been a critical concern over its short- and long-term performances. The degree of environmental degradation is supposed to have different mechanisms and kinetics at the polymer/reinforcement interfaces in comparison to the bulk polymer matrix. Differential degradation could possibly attribute a stressed state in the material, especially at the interfaces. Present review is focused on the roles of reinforcing CNT on the performance of the polymeric nanocomposites in different in-service environments (the environmental parameters include temperature, moisture, UV light, low earth orbit space environment, electromagnetic waves). It is essential to understand how the addition of CNTs in polymeric material alters the microstructure at micro- and nano-scale, and how these modifications influence the overall macroscopic behaviour, not only in its as fabricated form, but also its continuous alteration with time in the in-service environment. The technological superiority with CNT addition to polymeric materials may be advantageous, but scientific merits are here to be explored critically for a reliable and sustainable interfacial durability and structural integrity in different in-service environmental conditions.

Comparative investigation of thermal and mechanical properties of cross-linked epoxy polymers with different curing agents by molecular dynamics simulation

Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations were carried out to predict the thermal and mechanical properties of the cross-linked epoxy system composed of DGEBA resin and the curing agent TETA. To investigate the effects of curing agents, a comprehensive and comparative study was also performed on the thermal and mechanical properties of DGEBA/TETA and DGEBA/DETDA epoxy systems such as density, glass transition temperature (Tg), coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) and elastic properties of different cross-linking densities and different temperatures. The results indicated that the glass transition temperature of DGEBA/TETA system calculated through density-temperature data, ∼ 385-395 °K, for the epoxy system with the cross-linking density of 62.5% has a better agreement with the experimental value (Tg, ∼ 400 °K) in comparison to the value calculated through the variation of cell volume in terms of temperature, 430-440 °K. They also indicated that CTE related parameters and elastic properties including Young, Bulk, and shear's moduli, and Poisson's ratio have a relative agreement with the experimental results. Comparison between the thermal and mechanical properties of epoxy systems of DGEBA/TETA and DGEBA/DETDA showed that the DGEBA/DETDA has a higher Tg in all cross linking densities than that of DGEBA/TETA, while higher mechanical properties was observed in the case of DGEBA/TETA in almost all cross linking densities.

Mapping water uptake in organic coatings using AFM-IR

The long-term failure of seemingly intact corrosion resistant organic coatings is thought to occur via the development of ionic transport channels, which spontaneously evolve from hydrophilic regions on immersion, i.e., as a result of localized water uptake. To this end, we investigate water uptake characteristics for industrial epoxy-phenolic can coatings after immersion in deionized water and drying. Moisture sorption and the changing nature of polymer-water interactions are assessed using FTIR for dry and pre-soaked films. More water is found to be absorbed by the pre-soaked coatings on exposure to a humid environment, with a greater degree of hydrogen-bonding between the polymer and water. Furthermore, morphological changes are then correlated to localized water uptake using the AFM-IR technique. Nanoscale softened regions develop on soaking, and these are found to absorb a greater proportion of water from a humid environment.

Atomistic simulations of the structure of highly crosslinked sulfonated poly(styrene-co-divinylbenzene) ion exchange resins

The microscopic structures of highly crosslinked sulfonated poly(styrene-co-divinylbenzene) resins have been modeled by generating atomistic microstructures using stochastic-like algorithms, which are subsequently relaxed using molecular dynamics. Two different generation algorithms have been tested. The relaxation of the microstructures generated by the first algorithm, which is based on a homogeneous construction of the resin, leads to a significant overestimation of the experimental density as well as to an unsatisfactory description of the porosity. In contrast, the generation approach that combines algorithms for the heterogeneous growing and branching of the chains enables the formation of crosslinks with different topologies. In particular, the intrinsic heterogeneity observed in these resins is efficiently reproduced when the topological loops, which are defined by two or more crosslinks closing a cycle, are present in their microscopic description. Thus, the apparent density, porosity and pore volume estimated using microstructures with these topological loops, called super-crosslinks, are in very good agreement with the experimental results. Although the backbone dihedral angle distribution of the generated and relaxed models is not influenced by the topology, the number and type of crosslinks affect the medium- and long-range atomic disposition of the backbone atoms and the distribution of sulfonic groups. An analysis of the distribution of the local density indicates that super-crosslinks are responsible for the heterogeneous homogenization observed during the MD relaxation. Finally the π-π stacking interactions have been analyzed. Results indicate that those in which the two rings adopt a T-shaped disposition are considerably more abundant as compared to those with the co-facially oriented rings, independently of the resin topology.

Predicting water sorption and volume swelling in dense polymer systems via computer simulation

Atomistic model structures of amorphous polyamide 6 (PA-6) and of an adhesive system consisting of the diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (DGEBA) as epoxy resin and isophorone diamine (IPD) as a curing agent are generated. For the adhesive, we use a new approach for the generation of the cross-linked polymer networks. It takes into account the chemical reaction kinetics of the curing reaction and, therefore, results in more realistic network structures. On the basis of the corresponding model structures, the equilibrium water content and the swelling ratio of amorphous PA-6 and of the DGEBA+IPD networks are calculated via computer simulation for different thermodynamic conditions. A hybrid method is used combining the molecular dynamics technique with an accelerated test particle insertion method. The results are in reasonable agreement with experiments and, in the case of the PA-6 system, with results obtained via other computer simulation methods.

The diffusion mechanism of water transport in amine-cured epoxy networks

In the present work, time-resolved attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-IR), near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy, and generalized two-dimensional (2D) correlation analysis were used to investigate water diffusion processes and the state of water molecules in six different epoxy resins. Positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS) experimental results and IR results suggested that water diffusion is controlled by local chain reorientation and bond dissociation of water molecules from epoxy networks. Dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) results of glass transition temperatures of epoxy resins after immersion in hot water correlated well with the PALS and IR results. In addition, four types of water molecules, termed nonbonded (S(0)), single bonded (S(1)), loosely double hydrogen bonded (S(2L)), and tightly double bonded (S(2T)), were detected. It was likewise found, as verified by rough estimation, that water molecules with double hydrogen bonds mostly accomplished diffusion.
