Migration of MWCNTs during melt preparation of ABS/PC/MWCNT conductive composites via PC/MWCNT masterbatch approach

Mechanical Properties and Electromagnetic Interference Shielding of Carbon Composites with Polycarbonate and Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene Resins

As environmental pollution becomes a serious concern, considerable effort has been undertaken to develop power devices with minimal production of carbon dioxide (CO₂) and exhaust gases. Owing to this effort, interest in technologies related to hybrid and electric products that use fuel cells has been increasing. The risk of human injuries owing to electromagnetic waves generated by electrical and electronic devices has been also rising, prompting the development of mitigating technologies. In addition, antistatic devices for protecting operators from static electricity have also been considered. Therefore, in this study, we investigated the development of thermoplastic carbon composites containing carbon fibers (CFs) and carbon nanotubes (CNTs). Ultimately, materials with improved mechanical properties (e.g., flexural, impact, and tensile strength properties of about +61.09%, +21.44%, +63.56%, respectively), electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding (+70.73 dB), and surface resistivity (nearly zero) can be developed by impregnating CFs and CNTs with polycarbonate (PC) and acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) resins, respectively. The total average mechanical properties of PC and ABS composites increased by 24.35% compared with that of ABS composites, while that of PC composites increased by 32.86% with that of PC and ABS composites. Therefore, in this study, we aimed to develop carbon composites, to take advantage of these thermoplastic resins.

Strengthening Interfacial Adhesion and Foamability of Immiscible Polymer Blends via Rationally Designed Reactive Macromolecular Compatibilizers

Foams made of immiscible polymer blends have attracted great interest in both academia and industry, because of the integration of desirable properties of different polymers in a hybrid foam. However, the foamability and end-use properties are hampered because of the poor interfacial strength within the immiscible blends. Furthermore, few investigations have been carried out on the mechanisms by which interfacial strength and structure affect the foamability of polymer blends. In this work, two different reactive interfacial compatibilizers, i.e., poly(styrene-co-glycidyl methacrylate)-graft-poly(l-lactide) and poly(styrene-co-glycidyl methacry-late)-graft-poly(d-lactide), abbreviated as SG-g-PLLA and SG-g-PDLA, respectively, were designed and synthesized through reactive melt blending and subsequently applied to strengthen the interfacial strength and foamability of immiscible poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT)/poly(l-lactide) (PLLA) blends. Both compatibilizers could remarkably enhance the interfacial strength and foamability of the PBAT/PLLA blends, as evidenced by the significantly elongated dispersed phase in the resulting cocontinuous phase and more than 7000-fold increase in the cell density. Furthermore, the improved foamability was quantitively explained by the reduced gas diffusion and increased melt strength. Strikingly, the SG-g-PDLA introduced a stereocomplex crystal at the interface (i-SC), providing highly strengthened interfaces and nanoscale heterogeneous nucleation sites, which led to an energetically favorable cell nucleation. Moreover, foams with specifically laminated cell structures were fabricated by combining pressure-induced flow processing and i-SC strengthened interfaces. This work provides insight into the relationship between interfacial strength and formability of immiscible polymer blends and offers new possibilities for controlling cell morphologies and designing unique cell structures for polymer foams.

Changes in Electrical Conductance of Polymer Composites Melts Due to Carbon Nanofiller Particles Migration

In this work, the results of investigation of the effect of polymer composite melts electrical conductance increase with time are presented. The conductance time dependencies were obtained for composites based on polypropylene filled with carbon nanoparticles of different types. The dependencies were analyzed to demonstrate the possibility of correlation of the conductance kinetics with different composite parameters, such as the filler geometry. Additional studies were carried out, such as electron microscopy study, conductance measurements after consecutive surface layer removal, and composite melt conductance measurements using a three-electrode scheme. The results showed that the increased electrical conductance of the composite materials can be attributed to the formation of an enriched with the filler particles surface layer, which happens during the stay of the composite in a melt state. Analysis of the experimental data, along with the results of numerical modeling, allowed to suggest a possible filler distribution transformation scheme. The physical premises behind the investigated effect are discussed.

Improved electrical conductivity of TPU/carbon black composites by addition of COPA and selective localization of carbon black at the interface of sea-island structured polymer blends

The electrical percolation threshold of carbon black (CB) in thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) decreases by 46% with the incorporation of 20 wt% polyamide copolymer (COPA) through selective localization of CB particles at the interface of sea-island structured TPU/COPA blends. Composites with a composition of TPU/20 wt% COPA/9 wt% CB were prepared by four different mixing sequences and their morphologies were investigated by FESEM and TEM. The majority of CB particles were observed at the interface of sea-island structured blends irrespective of the compounding sequence used, although the percentage of CB particles at the interface is considerably less in the composite prepared by adding COPA to premixed TPU/CB. The driving force for the interfacial localization of most CB particles is the hydrogen bonding of CB with both TPU and COPA, which is confirmed by FTIR and DMA investigations. CB particles act like Janus particle-type compatibilizers with bonded TPU molecules toward the TPU phase and bonded COPA chains toward the COPA phase. Highly efficient conductive paths are formed through the CB-covered domains and a short inter-domain distance.
