One-pot synthesis of poly(methacrylic acid)-b-poly(2,2,2-trifluoroethyl methacrylate) diblock copolymers via RAFT polymerization

O-Trifluoromethylation of Carboxylic Acids via the Formation and Activation of Acyloxy(phenyl)trifluoromethyl-λ3-Iodanes

Here we report the challenging O-trifluoromethylation of carboxylic acids via the formation and activation of acyloxy(phenyl)trifluoromethyl-λ3-iodanes. The method provides an easy access to various potentially valuable and hitherto elusive trifluoromethyl carboxylic esters. A remarkably wide range of substrates with commonly encountered functional groups are compatible with this reaction, including aromatic and aliphatic carboxylic acids, as well as Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved drugs and pharmaceutically relevant molecules. The reaction mechanism and the origins of the enhanced reactivity by zinc chloride (ZnCl2) were discussed from experimental evidence and density functional theory (DFT) calculation.

Synthesis of Highly Transparent Diblock Copolymer Vesicles via RAFT Dispersion Polymerization of 2,2,2-Trifluoroethyl Methacrylate in n-Alkanes

RAFT dispersion polymerization of 2,2,2-trifluoroethyl methacrylate (TFEMA) is performed in n-dodecane at 90 °C using a relatively short poly(stearyl methacrylate) (PSMA) precursor and 2-cyano-2-propyl dithiobenzoate (CPDB). The growing insoluble poly(2,2,2-trifluoroethyl methacrylate) (PTFEMA) block results in the formation of PSMA-PTFEMA diblock copolymer nano-objects via polymerization-induced self-assembly (PISA). GPC analysis indicated narrow molecular weight distributions (M w/M n ≤ 1.34) for all copolymers, with 19F NMR studies indicating high TFEMA conversions (≥95%) for all syntheses. A pseudo-phase diagram was constructed to enable reproducible targeting of pure spheres, worms, or vesicles by varying the target degree of polymerization of the PTFEMA block at 15-25% w/w solids. Nano-objects were characterized using dynamic light scattering, transmission electron microscopy, and small-angle X-ray scattering. Importantly, the near-identical refractive indices for PTFEMA (1.418) and n-dodecane (1.421) enable the first example of highly transparent vesicles to be prepared. The turbidity of such dispersions was examined between 20 and 90 °C. The highest transmittance (97% at 600 nm) was observed for PSMA9-PTFEMA294 vesicles (237 ± 24 nm diameter; prepared at 25% w/w solids) in n-dodecane at 20 °C. Interestingly, targeting the same diblock composition in n-hexadecane produced a vesicle dispersion with minimal turbidity at a synthesis temperature of 90 °C. This solvent enabled in situ visible absorption spectra to be recorded during the synthesis of PSMA16-PTFEMA86 spheres at 15% w/w solids, which allowed the relatively weak n→π* band at 515 nm assigned to the dithiobenzoate chain-ends to be monitored. Unfortunately, the premature loss of this RAFT chain-end occurred during the RAFT dispersion polymerization of TFEMA at 90 °C, so meaningful kinetic data could not be obtained. Furthermore, the dithiobenzoate chain-ends exhibited a λmax shift of 8 nm relative to that of the dithiobenzoate-capped PSMA9 precursor. This solvatochromatic effect suggests that the problem of thermally labile dithiobenzoate chain-ends cannot be addressed by performing the TFEMA polymerization at lower temperatures.

Nanoaramid Dressed Latex Particles: The Direct Synthesis via Pickering Emulsion Polymerization

The direct synthesis of polymer microspheres modified by aramid nanofibers (ANFs) is an interesting challenge. This work describes a simple aqueous process to prepare polystyrene (PS)/ANF composite microspheres, where the specific ANF network was "dressed" on PS. ANF was derived from the copolymerization of terephthaloyl chloride, p-phenylene diamine, and methoxypolyethylene glycol and could be dispersed in water stably. We applied the as-synthesized ANF as a Pickering emulsifier in the o/w emulsion of styrene monomer. Radical polymerization was subsequently initiated in the Pickering emulsion system. The combination of ANF with polymer spheres was revealed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and thermal gravity analysis. The role of ANF in the monomer emulsion as well as in the polymerization was studied through SEM, optical microscopy, optical stability analyzer, and pulse nuclear magnetic resonance combined with the polymerization kinetic analysis. Moreover, we investigated the effects of other synthesis parameters, such as monomer type, monomer content, pH value, and salt concentration.

RAFT-Mediated Polymerization-Induced Self-Assembly of Poly(Acrylic Acid)-b-Poly(Hexafluorobutyl Acrylate): Effect of the pH on the Synthesis of Self-Stabilized Particles

This paper describes a very simple strategy towards self-stabilized poly(acrylic acid)-block-poly(hexafluorobutyl acrylate) (PAA-b-PHFBA) block copolymer particles via reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT)-mediated polymerization-induced self-assembly. Hexafluorobutyl acrylate (HFBA) monomer conversion and number-average molar mass of PAA-b-PHFBA increased gradually with the increase in the pH value of the aqueous phase. When pH < 10, the molecular weight distributions of PAA-b-PHFBA were narrow, however, when the pH was raised to 11.55, PAA-b-PHFBA block copolymers had a broader distribution (Đ_M = 1.82) with a serious trailing toward the low molecular weight. Furthermore, the morphology and size of PAA-b-PHFBA latex particles were measured by transmission electron microscopy and dynamic light scattering. The results indicated that the PAA-b-PHFBA latex particles had a clear spherical core-shell structure and the latex particles’ size increased with the increase of pH value.

A Critical Appraisal of RAFT-Mediated Polymerization-Induced Self-Assembly

Recently, polymerization-induced self-assembly (PISA) has become widely recognized as a robust and efficient route to produce block copolymer nanoparticles of controlled size, morphology, and surface chemistry. Several reviews of this field have been published since 2012, but a substantial number of new papers have been published in the last three years. In this Perspective, we provide a critical appraisal of the various advantages offered by this approach, while also pointing out some of its current drawbacks. Promising future research directions as well as remaining technical challenges and unresolved problems are briefly highlighted.
