Photoinduced orientation of photoresponsive copolymers with N-benzylideneaniline and nonphotoreactive mesogenic side groups

Synthesis, Characterization, Theoretical and Experimental Anticancer Evaluation of Novel Cocrystals of 5-Fluorouracil and Schiff Bases against SW480 Colorectal Carcinoma

The chemotherapeutic agent known as 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) is an artificial fluoropyrimidine antimetabolite that has been widely used for its antineoplastic properties. Cocrystals of 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) with five different Schiff bases (benzylidene-urea (BU), benzylidene-aniline (BA), salicylidene-aniline (SA), salicylidene-phenylhydrazine (SPH), and para-hydroxy benzylideneaniline (HBA)) are reported in this study. The newly synthesized cocrystals were analyzed by FTIR and PXRD. In this study, we investigated the antitumor efficacy of 5-FU derivatives in SW480 colon cancer cells via MTT assay at varying dose concentrations. Molecular docking was performed to predict the binding mechanism of TS with various 5-FU complexes. FTIR revealed the presence of respective functional groups in the prepared cocrystals. The frequencies (v) of N-H (3220.24 cm^-1) and carbonyl groups (1662.38 cm^-1) in the spectrum of 5-FU shifted considerably in all derivative cocrystal new interactions. There was a noticeable transformation in the PXRD peak of 5-FU at 2θ = 28.37° in all derivatives. The novelty of the present study lies in the fact that 5-FU-BA showed an anticancer potential IC₅₀ (6.4731) far higher than that of 5-FU (12.116), almost comparable to that of the reference drug doxorubicin (3.3159), against SW480 cancel cell lines, followed by 5-Fu-HBA (10.2174). The inhibition rates of 5-FU-BA and 5-FU-HBA were highest among the derivatives (99.85% and 99.37%, respectively) in comparison with doxorubicin (97.103%). The results revealed that the synthesized 5-FU cocrystals have promising antitumor efficacy compared with previously reported 5-FU and 5-FU. The activities of the cocrystals were rationalized by a molecular modeling approach to envisage binding modes with the target cancer protein.

Polarized Fluorescence of N-Salicylideneaniline Derivatives Formed by In Situ Exchange from N-Benzylideneaniline Side Groups in Photoaligned Liquid Crystalline Copolymer Films

Polarized fluorescence of oriented N-salicylideneaniline (SA) derivatives is explored based on the thermally stimulated photoinduced molecular reorientation of liquid crystalline (LC) copolymethacrylate with N-benzylideneaniline derivative (NBA2) and benzoic acid (BA) side groups. The LC copolymer films show significant cooperative molecular reorientation of the NBA2 and BA side groups (D > 0.7). Subsequent thermal hydrolysis of the NBA2 side groups yields free phenylamine moieties. These moieties can form oriented SA derivatives via in situ condensation with 2-hydroxybenzaldehyde derivatives. The excited-state intermolecular proton transfer of the oriented SA molecules induces polarized fluorescence at 510-548 nm with a polarization ratio up to 6.2. Direct in situ exchange from the oriented NBA2 to SA derivatives achieves polarized fluorescence similar to that of the SA side groups.

Discovery of Functional Luminescence Properties Based on Flexible and Bendable Boron-Fused Azomethine/Azobenzene Complexes with O,N,O-Type Tridentate Ligands

Azomethine (C=N) and azo (N=N) scaffolds are a part of structural units in poly(p-phenylene azomethine) (PAM) and poly(p-phenylene azo) (PAZ), respectively. Poly(p-phenylene vinylene) (PPV) is known to be one of luminescent π-conjugated polymers, meanwhile PAM and PAZ, which are the aza-substituted PPV analogues, are regarded as weak or no emissive materials. However, by the boron complexation, intense emission can be induced. Furthermore, environment-sensitivity and stimuli-responsivity were also observed. In this review, we demonstrate unique and versatile luminescent properties based on "flexible and bendable" π-conjugated systems composed of the boron-fused azomethine and azobenzene complexes (BAm and BAz) with the O,N,O-type tridentate ligands. The "flexible and bendable" luminophores showed intriguing optical behaviors, such as thermosalient effect, aggregation-induced emission (AIE) and crystallized-induced emission (CIE). Moreover, highly efficient emissions both in solution and film states were observed from the polymers. We illustrate the results and mechanisms on these luminescent properties from the series of our recent studies with BAm and BAz complexes and polymers.

Photoinduced Birefringent Pattern and Photoinactivation of Liquid-Crystalline Copolymer Films with Benzoic Acid and Phenylaldehyde Side Groups

In situ formation of N-benzylideneaniline (NBA) side groups achieved photoinduced cooperative reorientation of photoinactive copolymers with phenylaldehyde (PA) and benzoic acid (BA) side groups doped with 4-methoxyaniline (AN) molecules. Thermally stimulated molecular reorientation of the side groups was generated due to the axis-selective photoreaction of the NBA moieties. Selective coating with AN on the copolymer film formed NBA moieties in the desired region, resulting in a photoinduced birefringent pattern. Additionally, postannealing at an elevated temperature for a long time attained photoinactivation of the reoriented film, and recoating with AN to form NBA achieved the multiple birefringent patterns and repatterning of the reoriented structures. The slow thermal hydrolysis of NBA, which was 50 times slower than the thermally stimulated self-organization of the side groups due to the presence of BA side groups, contributed to the photodurability of the reoriented film and multiple birefringent patterns.

Scanning wave photopolymerization enables dye-free alignment patterning of liquid crystals

Hierarchical control of two-dimensional (2D) molecular alignment patterns over large areas is essential for designing high-functional organic materials and devices. However, even by the most powerful current methods, dye molecules that discolor and destabilize the materials need to be doped in, complicating the process. We present a dye-free alignment patterning technique, based on a scanning wave photopolymerization (SWaP) concept, that achieves a spatial light-triggered mass flow to direct molecular order using scanning light to propagate the wavefront. This enables one to generate macroscopic, arbitrary 2D alignment patterns in a wide variety of optically transparent polymer films from various polymerizable mesogens with sufficiently high birefringence (>0.1) merely by single-step photopolymerization, without alignment layers or polarized light sources. A set of 150,000 arrays of a radial alignment pattern with a size of 27.4 μm × 27.4 μm were successfully inscribed by SWaP, in which each individual pattern is smaller by a factor of 10⁴ than that achievable by conventional photoalignment methods. This dye-free inscription of microscopic, complex alignment patterns over large areas provides a new pathway for designing higher-performance optical and mechanical devices.

Orientation Direction Control in Liquid Crystalline Photoalignable Polymeric Films by Adjusting the Free-Surface Condition

Adjusting the free-surface condition facilely controls the in-plane and out-of-plane orientations in liquid crystalline polymer (LCP) films. Top coating with aromatic molecules onto LC polymethacrylate films with N-benzylideneaniline (NBA) or 4-methoxybiphenyl (MB) side groups (PNBAM or PMBM) and subsequent annealing generate a random planar orientation while simultaneously removing the coated aromatic molecules, whereas annealing noncoated films induces a homeotropic orientation of the mesogenic side groups. Additionally, irradiating a top-coated PNBAM film with linearly polarized (LP) 365 nm light induces an in-plane molecular reorientation of the NBA side groups without changing the orientation in the homeotropically oriented region. Changes in the surface topology of the LCP films due to the reorientation processes are investigated in detail. Inkjet coating with aromatic molecules and LP 365 nm light exposure precisely controls the in-plane and out-of-plane alignment pattern in a PNBAM film.
