Stimuli-responsive conjugated rod-coil block copolymers: Synthesis, morphology, and applications

Light-Triggered Reversible Swelling of Azobenzene-Containing Block Copolymer Worms via Confined Deformation Prepared by Polymerization-Induced Self-Assembly

Stimuli-responsive block copolymer nanoparticles (NPs) have received close attention in recent years owing to their tremendous application potential in smart materials. Azobenzene-containing NPs are widely studied due to the advantages of light as a stimulus and fast reversible trans-cis isomerization of azobenzene chromophores. However, the inefficient preparation process and difficult reversible transformation of morphologies limit their development. Herein it is demonstrated that the light-triggered reversible swelling behavior of wormlike NPs with high azobenzene content could be realized via confined deformation. These worms are prepared in large quantities via polymerization-induced self-assembly based on the copolymerization of 11-(4-(4-butylphenylazo)phenoxy)undecyl methacrylate (MAAz) and N-(methacryloxy)succinimide (NMAS) monomers. Upon UV/visible light irradiation, the reversible deformation of worms is achieved when the feed molar ratio of NMAS/MAAz is relatively high or via crosslinking using diamines, which leads to the reduction of the photoisomerization efficiency. The diameter variation of the worms is influenced by the amount and types of crosslinkers. Moreover, the scalability of this strategy is further proved by the fabrication of photo- and reductant-responsive crosslinked worms. It is expected that this study not only provides a new route to affording reversible photoresponsive NPs but also offers a unique insight into the reversible photodeformation mechanism of azobenzene-containing NPs.

pH Variation as a Simple and Selective Pathway for Obtaining Nanoparticle or Nanocapsule Polysaccharides

The fabrication of polysaccharides to be nanoparticles or nanocapsules is quite specific due to various parameters and factors. The present work demonstrates a simple pathway to selectively prepare the ionic polysaccharide flakes to be nanoparticles or nanocapsules. The systematic studies on the model cases of cationic polysaccharide (i.e., chitosan) and anionic polysaccharide (i.e., alginate) confirm that p K_a is the key point to tune the polysaccharides to be nanoparticles or nanocapsules. When the ionic polysaccharides were in an oil/water emulsion system, the pH close to p K_a leads to the densely packed polysaccharide chains under the hydrogen bond networks, and as a result the cross-link occurs all through the chains to be nanoparticles. On the other hand, when pH was adjusted to the lower or higher than p K_a depending on the types of ionic polysaccharide, the polysaccharide chains are under charge-charge repulsive force, resulting in the alignment of polysaccharide chains to be hollow nanospheres, and at that time the cross-link initiates the formation of nanocapsules. The present work, for the first time, clarifies that pH variation is the key to selectively prepare nanoparticles or nanocapsules, and this is important for delivery systems, coatings, sensors, and so forth.

Thermo-responsive poly(N-isopropylacrylamide)-block-poly(ionic liquid) of pyridinium sulfonate immobilized Pd nanoparticles in C–C coupling reactions

A thermo-responsive poly(N-isopropylacrylamide)-block-poly(ionic liquid) (PNIPAM-b-PIL) of pyridinium-type was prepared. Initially, controlled synthesis of PNIPAM was performed via RAFT method. Subsequently, PNIPAM as macromolecular chain transfer agent (macro-CTA) was used for fabrication of PNIPAM-b-PIL through reaction with a synthesized IL monomer i.e. 4-vinyl pyridinium propane sulfonate. The Pd catalyst was produced throughout palladium nanoparticles' anchoring into this block copolymer. The catalyst was characterized using ICP, FT-IR, NMR, UV-Vis, TGA, XRD, SEM and EDX techniques. The catalyst's TEM image proved nearly fine dispersion of PdNPs with negligible agglomeration. The catalyst was used in the production of a variety of substituted alkenes and biaryl compounds (Heck and Suzuki coupling) in organic and aqueous media and under solvent free conditions. Additionally, the results signified extreme reusability of the catalyst with a simple recycling procedure.

Preparation and characterization of a multistimuli-responsive photoluminescent monomer and its corresponding polymer

Preparation and Characterization of Thermo-Responsive Rod-Coil Diblock Copolymers

In this study, we synthesized amphiphilic poly(2,7–(9,9–dioctylfluorene))–block–N,N–(diisopropylamino)ethyl methacrylate (POF–b–PDPMAEMA) rod-coil diblock copolymers by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). The structure and multifunctional sensing properties of these copolymers were also investigated. The POF rod segment length of 10 was fixed and the PDPAEMA coil segment lengths of 90 and 197 were changed, respectively. The micellar aggregates of POF₁₀–b–PDPAEMA₉₀ rod-coil diblock copolymer in water showed a reversible shape transition from cylinder bundles to spheres when the temperature was changed from 20 to 80 °C or the pH was changed from 11 to 2. The atomic force microscopy (AFM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) measurements indicated that the temperature had also an obvious influence on the micelle size. In addition, since POF₁₀–b–PDPAEMA₉₀ had a lower critical solution temperature, its photoluminescence (PL) intensity in water is thermoreversible. The PL spectra showed that the POF–b–PDPAEMA copolymer had a reversible on/off profile at elevated temperatures, and thus could be used as an on/off fluorescent indicator for temperature or pH. The fluorescence intensity distribution of pH switched from “off–on” to “on–off” as the temperature increased. These results showed that the POF–b–PDPAEMA copolymer has a potential application for temperature and pH sensing materials.
