Mechanochemical Synthesis of Polyanilines and Their Nanocomposites: A Critical Review

The mechanochemical synthesis of polyanilines (PANIs), made by oxidative polymerization of anilines, is reviewed. First, previous knowledge of the polymerization reaction in solution is discussed to understand the effect of different parameters: oxidant/monomer ratio, added acid, oxidant, temperature and water content on the properties of the conducting polymers (molecular weight, degradation, doping/oxidation level, conductivity, and nanostructure). The work on mechanochemical polymerization (MCP) of anilines is analyzed in view of previous data in solution, and published data are critically reconsidered to clarify the interpretation of experimental results. A key factor is the production of acids during polymerization, which is often overlooked. The production of gaseous HCl during MCP of aniline hydrochloride is experimentally observed. Since some experiments involves the addition of small amounts of water, the kinetics and heat balance of the reaction with concentrated solutions were simulated. A simple experiment shows fast (<2 min) heating of the reaction mixture to the boiling point of water and temperature increments are observed during MCP in a mortar. The form and sizes of PANI nanostructures made by MCP or solution are compared. The extensive work on the production of nanocomposites by MCP of anilines together with different nanomaterials (porous clays, graphene, carbon nanotubes, metal, and oxide nanoparticles) is also described.

Facile Processing of Free-Standing Polyaniline/SWCNT Film as an Integrated Electrode for Flexible Supercapacitor Application

Flexible supercapacitors (SCs) with compact configuration are ideal energy storage devices for portable electronics, owing to their original advantages (e.g., fast charging/discharging). To effectively reduce the volume of SCs, an integrated electrode of free-standing polyaniline (PANI)/single-wall carbon nanotube (SWCNT) film with high performance has been developed via a facile solution deposition method, which can be employed as current collector and active material in the meantime. Thanks to the strong π-π interactions between PANI and CNTs, an efficient conductive network with ordered PANI molecular chains is formed in this hybrid film electrode, which is beneficial for the ion diffusion process and fast redox reaction resulting in a high capacitance of 446 F g^-1 and outstanding cycling stability, achieving 98% retention over 13 000 cycles. Predictably, solid-state SCs constructed by this free-standing PANI/SWCNT film electrode exhibited remarkable mechanical stability and flexibility in a compact configuration, let alone its excellent capacitive performance (218 F g^-1). Moreover, the highest energy density of flexible solid-state SC reached 19.45 Wh kg^-1 at a power density of 320.5 W kg^-1, further indicating a good potential as an energy storage device. This work would inspire other simple process techniques for high-performance flexible SCs, catering to the demand of portable electronic devices.

Hybrid composite membranes of chitosan/sulfonated polyaniline/silica as polymer electrolyte membrane for fuel cells

A series of novel ionic cross-linked chitosan (CS) based hybrid nanocomposites were prepared by using polyaniline/nano silica (PAni/SiO₂) as inorganic filler and sulfuric acid as an ionic cross-linking agent. The CS-PAni/SiO₂ nanocomposites show enhanced mechanical properties and improved oxidative stabilities. These nanocomposites can be effectively used as environmental friendly proton exchange membranes. Incorporation of PAni/SiO₂ into CS matrix enhances water uptake and facilitates the phase separation which enables the formation of hydrophilic domains and improves the proton transport. Moreover, the doped polyaniline also provides some additional pathways for proton conduction. The membrane containing 3wt% loading of PAni/SiO₂ in chitosan (CS-PAni/SiO₂-3) exhibits high proton conductivity at 80°C (8.39×10^-3Scm^-1) in fully hydrated state due to its excellent water retention properties. Moreover, methanol permeability of the ionic cross-linked CS-PAni/SiO₂ nanocomposite membranes significantly reduces with the addition of PAni/SiO₂ nano particles. The CS-PAni/SiO₂-3 composite membrane displays the best overall performance as a polymer electrolyte membrane.

Gallium Nitride Crystals: Novel Supercapacitor Electrode Materials

A type of single-crystal gallium nitride mesoporous membrane is fabricated and its supercapacitor properties are demonstrated for the first time. The supercapacitors exhibit high-rate capability, stable cycling life at high rates, and ultrahigh power density. This study may expand the range of crystals as high-performance electrode materials in the field of energy storage.
