Superabsorbent Polymers as a Soil Amendment for Increasing Agriculture Production with Reducing Water Losses under Water Stress Condition

With an increasing population, world agriculture is facing many challenges, such as climate change, urbanization, the use of natural resources in a sustainable manner, runoff losses, and the accumulation of pesticides and fertilizers. The global water shortage is a crisis for agriculture, because drought is one of the natural disasters that affect the farmers as well as their country's social, economic, and environmental status. The application of soil amendments is a strategy to mitigate the adverse impact of drought stress. The development of agronomic strategies enabling the reduction in drought stress in cultivated crops is, therefore, a crucial priority. Superabsorbent polymers (SAPs) can be used as an amendment for soil health improvement, ultimately improving water holding capacity and plant available water. These are eco-friendly and non-toxic materials, which have incredible water absorption ability and water holding capacity in the soil because of their unique biochemical and structural properties. Polymers can retain water more than their weight in water and achieve approximately 95% water release. SAP improve the soil like porosity (0.26-6.91%), water holding capacity (5.68-17.90%), and reduce nitrogen leaching losses from soil by up to 45%. This review focuses on the economic assessment of the adoption of superabsorbent polymers and brings out the discrepancies associated with the influence of SAPs application in the context of different textured soil, presence of drought, and their adoption by farmers.

Preparation and performance of chlorfenapyr microcapsules with a degradable polylactide-based polyurethane wall material

To improve the utilization rate of chlorfenapyr and make the wall material of chlorfenapyr microcapsules easily degradable, polylactide diol, toluene diisocyanate and 1,4-butanediol were used to prepare a chlorfenapyr microcapsule suspension by interfacial polymerization. The product was characterized by the methods of optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. The results indicated that the microcapsule particles were spherical, with an encapsulation efficiency of 84.20%. The diluted product had good wetting and spreading abilities on cabbage leaves. Compared with other commercial formulations, the slow-release effect of the microcapsule suspension was more obvious and the release mechanisms conform to Fickian diffusion, with the release rate controllable by adjusting the external pH conditions. Furthermore, the wall material of the microcapsules showed good degradation performance in a phosphate-buffered solution. Microencapsulation by this method significantly increased the validity period of chlorfenapyr and the wall material was also degraded easily.

3D Antidrying Antifreezing Artificial Skin Device with Self-Healing and Touch Sensing Capability

Hydrogels are attractive, active materials for various e-skin devices based on their unique functionalities such as flexibility and biocompatibility. Still, e-skin devices are generally limited to simple structures, and the realization of optimal-shaped 3D e-skin devices for target applications is an intriguing issue of interest. Furthermore, hydrogels intrinsically suffer from drying and freezing issues in operational capability for practical applications. Herein, 3D artificial skin devices are demonstrated with highly improved device stability. The devices are fabricated in a target-oriented 3D structure by extrusion-based 3D printing, spontaneously heal mechanical damage, and enable stable device operation over time and under freezing conditions. Based on the material design to improve drying and freezing resistance, an organohydrogel, prepared by solvent displacement of hydrogel with ethylene glycol for 3 h, exhibits excellent drying resistance over 1000 h and improved freezing resistance by showing no phase transition down to -60 °C while maintaining its self-healing functionality. Based on the improved drying and freezing resistance, artificial skin devices in target-oriented optimal 3D structures are presented, which enable accurate positioning of touchpoints even on a complicated 3D structure stably over time and excellent operation at temperatures below 0 °C without losing their flexibility.

Nanogels as drug-delivery systems: a comprehensive overview

Nanogels have attracted considerable attention as nanoscopic drug carriers, particularly for site-specific or time-controlled delivery of bioactive mediators. A high diversity of polymer systems and the simple modification of their physicochemical features have provided multipurpose forms of nanogel preparations. Nanogels have outstandingly high stability, drug loading ability, biologic consistence, good permeation capability and can be responsive to environmental stimuli. Great potential has been shown by nanogels in many fields including delivery of genes, chemotherapy drugs, diagnosis, targeting of specific organs and several others. This review focuses mainly on different types of nanogels, methods of preparation including methods of drug loading, different modes of biodegradation mechanisms as well as main mechanisms of drug release from nanogels. Recent applications of nanogels are also briefly discussed and exemplified.

Mechanical properties of l-lysine based segmented polyurethane vascular grafts and their shape memory potential

Segmented polyurethanes based on polycaprolactone, 4,4 (metylene-bis-cyclohexyl) isocyanate, and l-lysine were synthesized, manufactured as small vascular grafts and characterized according to ISO 7198 standard for cardiovascular implants-tubular vascular prosthesis. In terms of mechanical properties, the newly synthesized polyurethane films exhibited lower secant modulus than Tecoflex™ SG 80A, a well-known medical grade polyurethane. Similarly, when tested as grafts, the l-lysine-based polyurethane exhibited lower longitudinal failure load (11.5 N vs. 116 N), lower circumferential failure load per unit length (5.67 N/mm vs. 14.0 N/mm) and lower suture forces for both nylon (13.3 N vs. 24.0 N) and silk (14.0 N vs. 19.3 N) when compared to Tecoflex™ SG 80A grafts. l-Lysine-based graft exhibited a burst strength of 3620 mmHg (482.6 kPa) and a compliance of 0.16%/mmHg. The cell adhesion was demonstrated with NIH/3T3 fibroblasts where cell adhesion was observed on both films and grafts, while cell alignment was observed only on the grafts. The mechanical properties of this polyurethane and the possibility of strain-induced PCL crystals as the switching phase for shape memory materials, allowed a strain recovery ratio and a strain fixity ratio with values higher than 95% and 90%, respectively, with a repeatability of the shape-memory properties up to 4 thermo-mechanical cycles. Overall, the properties of lysine-based polyurethanes are suitable for large diameter vascular grafts where cell alignment can be controlled by their shape memory potential.

Adjustable Tribological Behavior of Glucose-Sensitive Hydrogels

Stimuli-responsive hydrogels have been considered to have various applications in numerous fields. In the present work, a double-network (DN) hydrogel has been synthesized. The copolymers of 2-acrylamide-2-methylpropane sulfonic acid (AMPS) and acrylamide (AM) [P(AMPS- co-AM)] are prepared as the 1st network and poly(acrylic acid) as the 2nd network. This DN hydrogel is sensitive to glucose by introducing the glucose-sensitive group phenylboronic acid to the network. The tribological properties of this glucose-sensitive DN hydrogel have been investigated using a universal mechanical tester (UMT-5). The tribological results show that the friction coefficient varied with the glucose solution. The friction coefficient increased to a maximum of 0.06, and finally decreased to 0.025 with the increase in the glucose concentration. An adjustable friction coefficient of the hydrogel, between 0.025 and 0.056, was achieved along with the change of lubricant. According to the tribological experimental results and the analysis of the DN structure, it can be deduced that a hydrated layer exists in the interface of the hydrogel. The hydrated layers consisting of water molecules are bounded with the hydrophilic group of the hydrogel network by hydrogen bonds. The change in the number of water molecules leads to the difference in the water content of the hydrogel, which further resulted in the various tribological properties. In addition, the hydrogel's mesh size also has an impact on the change in friction coefficient. In general, the adjustable friction of the hydrogel in a glucose environment is achieved.

A Rapidly Self-Healing Host-Guest Supramolecular Hydrogel with High Mechanical Strength and Excellent Biocompatibility

It is still a challenge to achieve both excellent mechanical strength and biocompatibility in hydrogels. In this study, we exploited two interactions to form a novel biocompatible, slicing-resistant, and self-healing hydrogel. The first was molecular host-guest recognition between a host (isocyanatoethyl acrylate modified β-cyclodextrin) and a guest (2-(2-(2-(2-(adamantyl-1-oxy)ethoxy)ethoxy)ethoxy)ethanol acrylate) to form "three-arm" host-guest supramolecules (HGSMs), and the second was covalent bonding between HGSMs (achieved by UV-initiated polymerization) to form strong cross-links in the hydrogel. The host-guest interaction enabled the hydrogel to rapidly self-heal. When it was cut, fresh surfaces were formed with dangling host and guest molecules (due to the breaking of host-guest recognition), which rapidly recognized each other again to heal the hydrogel by recombination of the cut surfaces. The smart hydrogels hold promise for use as biomaterials for soft-tissue repair.

Preparation and Property Evaluation of Conductive Hydrogel Using Poly (Vinyl Alcohol)/Polyethylene Glycol/Graphene Oxide for Human Electrocardiogram Acquisition

Conductive hydrogel combined with Ag/AgCl electrode is widely used in the acquisition of bio-signals. However, the high adhesiveness of current commercial hydrogel causes human skin allergies and pruritus easily after wearing hydrogel for electrodes for a long time. In this paper, a novel conductive hydrogel with good mechanical and conductive performance was prepared using polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), polyethylene glycol (PEG), and graphene oxide (GO) nanoparticles. A cyclic freezing⁻thawing method was employed under processing conditions of -40 °C (8 h) and 20 °C (4 h) separately for three cycles in sequence until a strong conductive hydrogel, namely, PVA/PEG/GO gel, was obtained. Characterization (Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance, scanning electron microscopy) results indicated that the assembled hydrogel was successfully prepared with a three-dimensional network structure and, thereafter, the high strength and elasticity due to the complete polymeric net formed by dense hydrogen bonds in the freezing process. The as-made PVA/PEG/GO hydrogel was then composited with nonwoven fabric for electrocardiogram (ECG) electrodes. The ECG acquisition data indicated that the prepared hydrogel has good electro-conductivity and can obtain stable ECG signals for humans in a static state and in motion (with a small amount of drift). A comparison of results indicated that the prepared PVA/PEG/GO gel obtained the same quality of ECG signals with commercial conductive gel with fewer cases of allergies and pruritus in volunteer after six hours of wear.
