Furan-functionalized aniline trimer based self-healing polymers exhibiting high efficiency of anticorrosion

Developments in anticorrosive organic coatings modulated by nano/microcontainers with porous matrices

The durability and functionality of many metallic structures are seriously threatened by corrosion, which makes the development of anticorrosive coatings imperative. This state-of-the-art survey explores the recent developments in the field of anticorrosive organic coatings modulated by innovations involving nano/microcontainers with porous matrices. The integration of these cutting-edge delivery systems seeks to improve the protective properties of coatings by enabling controlled release, extended durability, targeted application of corrosion inhibitors, and can be co-constructed to achieve defect filling by polymeric materials. The major highlight of this review is an in-depth analysis of the functionalities provided by porous nano/microcontainers in the active protection and self-healing of anticorrosive coatings, including their performance evaluation. In one case, after 20 days of immersion in 0.1 M NaCl, a scratched coating containing mesoporous silica nanoparticles loaded with an inhibitor benzotriazole and shelled with polydopamine (MSNs-BTA@PDA) exhibited coating restoration indicated by a sustained corrosion resistance rise over an extended period monitored by impedance values at 0.01 Hz frequency, rising from 8.3 × 104 to 7.0 × 105 Ω cm2, a trend assigned to active protection by the release of inhibitors and self-healing capabilities. Additionally, some functions related to anti-fouling and heat preservation by nano/microcontainers are highlighted. Based on the literature survey, some desirable properties, current challenges, and prospects of anticorrosive coatings doped with nano/microcontainers have been summarized. The knowledge gained from this survey will shape future research directions and applications in a variety of industrial areas, in addition to advancing smart corrosion prevention technology.

Preparation and Characterization of Conductive/Self-Healing Resin Nanocomposites Based on Tetrafunctional Furan-Functionalized Aniline Trimer Modified Graphene

The nanocomposites with reversible cross-linking covalent bonds were prepared by reacting furfurylamine (FA)-modified diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (DGEBA) and furfuryl-functionalized aniline trimer-modified graphene (TFAT-G) with bismaleimide (BMI) via the Diels-Alder (DA) reaction. The successful synthesis of the TFAT modifier is confirmed by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) hydrogen spectroscopy and IR spectroscopy tests. The structure and properties of TFAT-G epoxy nanocomposites are characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), differential scanning calorimeter (DSC), tensile, and resistivity. The results show that TFAT-G was uniformly dispersed in the resin, and 1 wt% TFAT-G composites increased to 233% for tensile strength, 63% for elongation at break, 66% for modulus, and 7.8 °C for Tg. In addition, the addition of unmodified graphene degrades the mechanical properties of the composite. Overall, the graphene/self-healing resin nanocomposites have both good self-healing function and electrical conductivity by adding 1 wt% modified graphene; this allows for the maintenance of the original 83% strength and 89% electrical conductivity after one cycle of heating repair.

Reductive Amination of 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural to 2,5-Bis(aminomethyl)furan over Alumina-Supported Ni-Based Catalytic Systems

Mono- and bimetallic Ni-based catalysts were prepared by screening 6 supports and 14 secondary metals for reductive amination of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF) into 2,5-bis(aminomethyl)furan (BAMF), among which γ-Al₂ O₃ and Mn were the best candidates. By further optimization of the reaction conditions at 0.4 g catalyst loading for 0.5 g substrate of 5-HMF and 160 °C of reaction temperature, 10Ni/γ-Al₂ O₃ and 10NiMn(4 : 1)/γ-Al₂ O₃ achieved the highest BAMF yields of 86.3 and 82.1 %, respectively. Although the BAMF yield values were comparable with that over Raney Ni, the turnover frequencies based on the initial BAMF yield and unit weight of Ni for 10NiMn(4 : 1)/γ-Al₂ O₃ , 10Ni/γ-Al₂ O₃ , and Raney Ni were calculated as 0.41, 0.09, and 0.04 h^-1 , respectively. X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy showed that the existence of MnO_x well dispersed on the γ-Al₂ O₃ support and its electron transfer effect with Ni particles on the surface of the support contributed to the high efficiency and better recyclability for the five-time reused 10NiMn(4 : 1)/γ-Al₂ O₃ catalyst.

Corrosion self-warning and repair tracking of polymeric coatings based on stimulus responsive nanosensors

Smart polymeric coatings with early corrosion self-warning and damage self-repairing characteristics have garnered tremendous interest due to their ability to sense corrosion reactions and repair coating defects. However, tracking the repair process and its underlying protection mechanism is highly challenging. Herein, we report the construction of a novel composite coating by incorporating multifunctional nanosensors (graphene oxide-zeolitic imidazole frameworks loaded with 1,10-phenanthroline) into a thermo-responsive polyurethane. Under damaging events, the localized acidity derived from metal corrosion stimulates the decomposition of the nanosensors to produce 1,10-phenanthroline and benzimidazole. The generated ferrous ions are rapidly sensed by the released 1,10-phenanthroline to produce a conspicuous red color, which warns of the corrosion occurrence. In profiting from the photothermal effect of graphene oxide, the composite coating exhibits efficient crack closure behavior under near-infrared light irradiation. Morphology observation indicates that a coating scratch (about 30 μm wide) almost closed with 20 s of irradiation. The photothermally activated crack closure combined with benzimidazole inhibition endows the prepared coating with superior self-repairing performance. Interestingly, the change in color intensity around the coating defect can assist in tracking the repair process. Therefore, this work provides a novel strategy to visualize microscopic behaviors during damage and repair processes.

One-Step Reductive Amination of 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural into 2,5-Bis(aminomethyl)furan over Raney Ni

Simultaneous reductive amination of C=O and C-OH in 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) into C-NH₂ in 2,5-bis(aminomethyl)furan (BAMF) is challenging. In this work, reductive amination of C=O in HMF was firstly studied, in which HMF can be converted into 5-hydroxymethyl furfurylamine (HMFA) with a 99.5 % yield over Raney Co catalyst. BAMF was then directly synthesized with 82.3 % yield from HMF over Raney Ni catalyst at 160 °C for 12 h. An even higher yield of 88.3 % could be obtained through a stepwise reductive amination process, in which the reaction started at 120 °C for the first 2 h over Raney Co mainly for amination of C=O and then continued at 160 °C for another 10 h over Raney Ni mainly for amination of C-OH. Under optimized reaction conditions, the catalyst could be reused four times without obvious loss in catalytic performance. XRD and XPS characterization of the reused catalyst indicated that the formation of Ni₃ N and the adsorption of alkyl amines could be the main reasons for the deactivation of the catalyst. Moreover, plausible reaction pathways were proposed to originate the detected by-products according to the kinetic profiles.

Synthesis of nanosensors for autonomous warning of damage and self-repairing in polymeric coatings

Polymeric materials are susceptible to minor damage, which is undetectable. Without timely and effective repair treatment, the damage may deteriorate the integrity of the materials and ultimately result in material failure and catastrophe. Autonomous warning and simultaneous damage repair are of great practical significance yet difficult to realize. Herein, we introduce a smart coating with autonomous warning and repairing of damage by the simple incorporation of nanosensors embedded with phenanthroline as a corrosion indicator and inhibitor. The electrochemical corrosion resulting from coating damage can be rapidly indicated by a prominent orange-red color in just five minutes. In addition to the warning function, the smart coating exhibits efficient self-repairing in the defective region, as reflected from the disappearance of the electrochemical admittance peak. This simple and powerful strategy dependent on a single active component to achieve an autonomous warning and repairing effect is highly expected to provide a new avenue for enhancing the security and longevity of other polymeric materials.

Evaluation of thermo-mechanical, dielectric and corrosion resistant properties of cardanol benzoxazine-epoxy based hybrid composites: A very low temperature curing pre-polymer for high performance paint related applications

In the present work, the hybrid siloxane-based cardanol-benzoxazine-epoxy (1:1 ratio) matrix (SBCBz-EP) capable of curing at substantially low temperature when compared with that of conventional benzoxazines was prepared and characterized. The matrix SBCBz-EP was reinforced with varying weight percentages (1, 3 and 5 wt%) of hydroxyl-terminated cyclotriphosphazene (HTCP) and the resulting hybrid composites were characterized by modern analytical methods, which can be used for paint-related applications due to their low-temperature curing behaviour. Data obtained from differential scanning calorimeter analysis infer that the glass transition temperature of the hybrid matrix (SBCBz-EP) and HTCP reinforced with 1, 3 and 5 wt% composites was 73°C, 75°C, 82°C, and 88°C, respectively. The polymerization temperature obtained for SBCBz-EP matrix and HTCP-reinforced hybrid composites was considerably lower than that of conventional benzoxazines. The present hybridization approach of benzoxazine and epoxy paves an avenue to alleviate the deficient characteristics of both industrially valuable resins namely high curing temperature and brittle behaviour of benzoxazines and also to improve thermal stability, mechanical strength and flame-retardant behaviour of epoxy resins. Data obtained from mechanical, dielectric, thermal stability and corrosion-resistant studies indicate that the properties of hybrid composites (HTCP/SBCBZ-EP) were enhanced to an appreciable extent according to the wt% of HTCP and it can be suggested that these hybrid composite materials can be used in the form of adhesives, sealants, encapsulants and water-resistant coatings for high performance industrial applications.

Coupling the Microscopic Healing Behaviour of Coatings to the Thermoreversible Diels-Alder Network Formation

While thermally reversible polymer network coatings based on the Diels-Alder reaction are widely studied, the mechanisms responsible for the heating-mediated healing of damage is still not well understood. The combination of microscopic evaluation techniques and fundamental insights for the thermoreversible network formation in the bulk and coating shed light on the mechanisms behind the damage healing events. The thermomechanical properties of thermoset and elastomer coatings, crosslinked by the furan-maleimide Diels-Alder cycloaddition reaction, were studied in bulk and compared to the thermal behaviour applied as coatings onto aluminium substrates. The damage sealing of thermoset (Tg = 79 °C) and elastomer (Tg = −49 °C) coatings were studied using nano-lithography and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The sealing event is studied and modelled at multiple temperatures and correlated to the changes in the network structure and corresponding thermomechanical properties.
