Abstract
In this study, the plasma graft polymerization technique was used to graft glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) onto polypropylene (PP) melt-blown fibers, which were subsequently aminated with N-methyl-D-glucamine (NMDG) by a ring-opening reaction, resulting in the formation of a boron adsorbent denoted as PP-g-GMA-NMDG. The optimal conditions for GMA concentration, grafting time, grafting temperature, and the quantity of NMDG were determined using both single factor testing and orthogonal testing. These experiments determined the optimal process conditions to achieve a high boron adsorption capacity of PP-g-GMA-NMDG. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersion spectrum analysis (EDS), and water contact angle measurements were performed to characterize the prepared adsorbent. Boron adsorption experiments were carried out to investigate the effects of pH, time, temperature, and boron concentration on the boron adsorption capacity of PP-g-GMA-NMDG. The adsorption isotherms and kinetics of PP-g-GMA-NMDG for boron were also studied. The results demonstrated that the adsorption process followed a pseudo-second-order kinetic model and a Langmuir isothermal model. At a pH of 6, the maximum saturation adsorption capacity of PP-g-GMA-NMDG for boron was 18.03 ± 1 mg/g. In addition, PP-g-GMA-NMDG also showed excellent selectivity for the adsorption of boron in the presence of other cations, such as Na+, Mg2+, and Ca2+, PP-g-GMA-NMDG, and exhibited excellent selectivity towards boron adsorption. These results indicated that the technique of preparing PP-g-GMA-NMDG is both viable and environmentally benign. The PP-g-GMA-NMDG that was made has better qualities than other similar adsorbents. It has a high adsorption capacity, great selectivity, reliable repeatability, and easy recovery. These advantages indicated that the adsorbents have significant potential for widespread application in the separation of boron in water.

Abstract
The numerous oxidation states of the element boron bring great challenges in containing its contamination in receptor bodies. This scenario increases significantly due to the widespread use of boron compounds in various industries in recent years. For this reason, the removal of this contaminant is receiving worldwide attention. Although adsorption is a promising method in boron removal, finding suitable adsorbents, that is, those with high efficiency, and feasible remains a constant challenge. Hence, this review presents the boron removal methods in comparison to costs of adsorbents, reaction mechanisms, economic viability, continuous bed application, and regeneration capacity. In addition, the approach of multivariate algorithms in the solution of multiobjective problems can enable the optimized conditions of dosage of adsorbents and coagulants, pH, and initial concentration of boron. Therefore, this review sought to comprehensively and critically demonstrate strategic issues that may guide the choice of method and adsorbent or coagulant material in future research for bench and industrial scale boron removal.

Abstract
The excess presence of phosphate(V) ions in the biosphere is one of the most serious problems that negatively affect aqueous biocenosis. Thus, phosphates(V) separation is considered to be important for sustainable development. In the presented study, an original cerium(IV)-modified chitosan-based hydrogel (Ce-CTS) was developed using the chemical co-precipitation method and then used as an adsorbent for efficient removal of phosphate(V) ions from their aqueous solutions. From the scientific point of view, it represents a completely new physicochemical system. It was found that the adsorptive removal of phosphate(V) anions by the Ce-CTS adsorbent exceeded 98% efficiency which is ca. 4-times higher compared with the chitosan-based hydrogel without any modification (non-cross-linked CTS). The best result of the adsorption capacity of phosphates(V) on the Ce-CTS adsorbent, equal to 71.6 mg/g, was a result of adsorption from a solution with an initial phosphate(V) concentration 9.76 mg/dm3 and pH 7, an adsorbent dose of 1 g/dm3, temperature 20 °C. The equilibrium interphase distribution data for the Ce-CTS adsorbent and aqueous solution of phosphates(V) agreed with the theoretical Redlich-Peterson and Hill adsorption isotherm models. From the kinetic point of view, the pseudo-second-order model explained the phosphates(V) adsorption rate for Ce-CTS adsorbent the best. The specific effect of porous structure of adsorbent influencing the diffusional mass transfer resistances was identified using Weber-Morris kinetic model. The thermodynamic study showed that the process was exothermic and the adsorption ran spontaneously. Modification of CTS with cerium(IV) resulted in the significant enhancement of the chitosan properties towards both physical adsorption (an increase of the point of zero charge of adsorbent), and chemical adsorption (through the presence of Ce(IV) that demonstrates a chemical affinity for phosphate(V) anions). The elaborated and experimentally verified highly effective adsorbent can be successfully applied to uptake phosphates(V) from aqueous systems. The Ce-CTS adsorbent is stable in the conditions of the adsorption process, no changes in the adsorbent structure or leaching of the inorganic filling were observed.

Abstract
Boron is in high demand in many sectors, yet there are significant flaws in current boron resource utilization. This study describes the synthesis of a boron adsorbent based on polypropylene (PP) melt-blown fiber using ultraviolet (UV)-induced grafting of Glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) onto PP melt-blown fiber, followed by an epoxy ring-opening reaction with N-methyl-D-glucosamine (NMDG). Using single-factor studies, grafting conditions such as the GMA concentration, benzophenone dose, and grafting duration were optimized. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and water contact angle were used to characterize the produced adsorbent (PP-g-GMA-NMDG). The PP-g-GMA-NMDG adsorption process was examined by fitting the data with different adsorption settings and models. The results demonstrated that the adsorption process was compatible with the pseudo-second-order model and the Langmuir model; however, the internal diffusion model suggested that the process was impacted by both extra- and intra-membrane diffusion. According to thermodynamic simulations, the adsorption process was exothermic. At pH 6, the greatest saturation adsorption capacity to boron was 41.65 mg·g-1 for PP-g-GMA-NMDG. The PP-g-GMA-NMDG preparation process is a feasible and environmentally friendly route, and the prepared PP-g-GMA-NMDG has the advantages of high adsorption capacity, outstanding selectivity, good reproducibility, and easy recovery when compared to similar adsorbents, indicating that the reported adsorbent is promising for boron separation from water.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Although halophilic archaea are rich in natural environments, their biotechnological applications are not as prevalent as those of other extremophiles, such as thermophiles and alkaliphiles. This study presents an simple method to prepare a hydrogel composite using crude cell lysate of a halophilic archaea, Halorubrum ejinoor sp. (H.e.) which was isolated from a saline lake in Inner Mongolia, China. Furthermore, formation mechanism and potential applications of the hydrogel as an adsorbing material are discussed. RESULTS Halorubrum ejinoor sp. (H.e.) cell lysate was firstly prepared by adding pure water onto the H.e. cell pellet, followed by a short incubation at 60 °C. The cell lysate was injected into different metal ion (or H+) solutions to obtain the hydrogel composite. It was observed that H+, Fe3+, La3+, Cu2+, and Ca2+ induced gelation of the cell lysate, while Fe2+, Co2+, Ni2+, Mg2+, Na+, and K+ did not. DNA and extracellular polysaccharides (EPS) in the H.e. cell lysate were found to be responsible for the gelation reaction. These results suggest that DNA and EPS should be crosslinked by metal ions (or H+) and form a networked structure in which the metal ion (or H+) serves as an anchor point. Potential application of the hydrogel as an adsorbing material was explored using La3+-induced H.e. hydrogel composite. The hydrogel composite can adsorb the fluoride, phosphate and DNA-binding carcinogenic agents, such as acridine orange. CONCLUSIONS The simplicity and cost effectiveness of the preparation method might make H.e. hydrogel a promising adsorbing material. This work is expected to expand the technical applications of haloarchaea.

Abstract
The anthropogenic emission of boron to river has become a serious problem that deteriorates the water quality and endangers the ecosystem. Although boron is a micronutrient, it is toxic to plants, animals and humans upon exposure. In this review, we first present the sources of the boron-containing streams and their composition, and then summarize the recent progress of boron removal methods based on adsorption and coagulation systematically. The boron-spiked streams are produced from coal-fired and geothermal power plants, the manufacturing and the activities of oil/gas excavation and mining. The adsorbents for boron removal are classified into the ones functionalized by chelating groups, the ones on the basis of clays or metal oxide. Three subgroups reside in the coagulation approach: electrocoagulation, chemical precipitation and chemical oxo-precipitation. The hybrid technology that combines membrane process and adsorption/coagulation was covered as well. To provide a comprehensive view of each method, we addressed the reaction mechanism, specified the strength and weakness and summarized the progress in the past 5 years. Ultimately, the prospective for future research and the possible improvement on applicability and recyclability were proposed.

Abstract
Adsorption plays an important role in seawater desalination, wastewater treatment, and, especially, boron removal from natural aqueous systems. In this paper, two sponge-like multifunctional polymers based on a cyclodextrin backbone were synthesized and used as adsorbents for the removal of boron, methylene blue (MB), methyl orange (MO), and phenol. The syntheses were carried out by esterification, atom transfer polymerization, and nucleophilic addition reaction. The polymers were characterized by 1H NMR spectroscopy, IR spectroscopy, XRD, XPS, and SEM. The performance of the two different adsorbents was investigated considering the effect of pH, initial concentration, and the anions and cations in an aqueous solution of borates. The experimental data were fitted with an adsorption isothermal model, adsorption kinetic model and other models. Both adsorbents exhibited high adsorption capacities (B: 31.05 mg/g and 20.45 mg/g, MB: 29.43 mg/g and 32.29 mg/g, MO: 47.36 mg/g and 49.23 mg/g, phenol: 5.04 mg/g and 4.35 mg/g, respectively) and a fast adsorption rate. The boron adsorption was found to be an exothermic process. The adsorbents show promising potential for the removal of boron and benzene-containing organic pollutants from aqueous solution.

Abstract
Due to the wonderful property of hydrogels, they can provide a platform for a wide range of applications. Recently, there is a growing research interest in the development of potential hydrogel adsorbents in wastewater treatment due to their adsorption ability toward aqueous pollutants. It is important to prepare such a hydrogel that possesses appropriate robustness, adsorption capacity, and adsorption efficiency to meet the need of water treatment. In order to improve the property of hydrogels, much effort has been made by researchers to modify hydrogels, among which incorporating inorganic components into the polymeric networks is the most common method, which can reduce the product cost and simplify the preparation procedure. Not only can hydrogel be applied as adsorbent, but it also can be used as matrix for catalyst immobilization. In this review, the key advancement on the preparation and modification of hydrogels is discussed, with special emphasis on the introduction of inorganic materials into polymeric networks and consequential changes in the properties of mechanical strength, swelling, and adsorption. Besides, hydrogels used as adsorbents for removal of dyes and inorganic pollutants have been widely explored, but their use for adsorbing emerging contaminants from aqueous solution has not received much attention. Thus, this review is mainly focused on hydrogels' application in removing emerging contaminants by adsorption. Furthermore, hydrogels can be also applied in immobilizing catalysts, such as enzyme and photocatalyst, to remove pollutants completely and avoid secondary pollution, so their progress as catalyst matrix is overviewed.

Removal of Boron and Manganese Ions from Wet-Flue Gas Desulfurization Wastewater by Hybrid Chitosan-Zirconium Sorbent. Polymers (Basel) 2020; 12:polym12030635. [PMID: 32164366 PMCID: PMC7183067 DOI: 10.3390/polym12030635] [Citation(s) in RCA: 11] [Impact Index Per Article: 2.8] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [Track Full Text] [Download PDF] [Figures] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 02/21/2020] [Revised: 03/07/2020] [Accepted: 03/08/2020] [Indexed: 11/18/2022] Open
Abstract
Flue gas desulfurization (FGD) wastewater, after the alkaline precipitation and coagulation processes, often requires additional treatment in order to reduce the concentrations of boron and heavy metals below the required limits. In this study, we present an innovative and environmentally friendly method for boron and manganese removal that is based on a hybrid chitosan-zirconium hydrogel sorbent. The results from the batch adsorption experiment indicated that the uptake capacity for boron and manganese was equal to 1.61 mg/g and 0.75 mg/g, respectively, while the column study indicated that the total capacity of boron and manganese was equal to 1.89 mg/g and 0.102 mg/g, respectively. The very good applicability of the Langmuir isotherm at 25 °C suggested the monolayer coverage of the boron species onto the hybrid chitosan-zirconium hydrogel with a maximum adsorptive capacity of 2 mg/g. The amounts of boron and manganese in purified water could be decreased to less than 1 mg/dm3 and 0.05 mg/dm3, respectively, starting from the initial concentration of boron equal to 24.7 mg/dm3 and manganese equal to 3.0 mg/dm3 in FGD wastewater. Selective desorption of boron from the loaded bed was favorable when a NaOH solution was used, while manganese was preferentially eluted with a HCl solution. It is important to note that such an innovative method was investigated for the first time by testing borax recovery from wastewater in terms of an eco-technological perspective.

Abstract
Chitosan-based hydrogel has received considerable interests because of its appealing properties and applications in many areas. The primary objective of this work was to produce novel cationic chitosan-based hydrogels via polymerizing chitosan with two cationic monomers of the same structure but with different counter ions [2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl]trimethylammonium methyl sulfate (METMS) and [2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl]trimethylammonium chloride (METAC). Polymerization of chitosan with the cationic monomers performed under the conditions of 50 °C, 5 h, 7 pH, and 2/1 mol/mol monomer/chitosan led to chitosan-METMS and -METAC with the cationic charge densities of 3.22 and 2.88 mequiv/g, respectively. Elemental analysis, gel permeation chromatography, Fourier transform infrared, X-ray diffraction, and differential scanning calorimetry analyses were used to confirm the impact of counter ions of cationic monomers (i.e., polarizability of monomers) on their polymerization performance and the characteristics of induced chitosan-based hydrogels. Also, the results of this work postulated that the counter ions associated with the monomers could dramatically impact the water uptake and swelling properties of the generated chitosan-based hydrogels as well as their performance in adsorbing an anionic dye from a simulated solution.

Abstract
Boron removal was evaluated in the present work by using calcium alginate beads (CA) and a novel composite based on alginate-alumina (CAAl) as sorbents in a batch system. The effects of different parameters such as pH, temperature, contact time, and composition of alginate (at different concentrations of guluronic and mannuronic acids) on boron sorption were investigated. The results confirm that calcium alginate beads (CA) exhibited a better adsorption capacity in a slightly basic medium, and the composite alginate-alumina (CAAl) exhibited improved boron removal at neutral pH. Sorption isotherm studies were performed and the Langmuir isotherm model was found to fit the experimental data. The maximum sorption capacities were 4.5 mmol g-1 and 5.2 mmol g-1, using CA and CAAl, respectively. Thermodynamic parameters such as change in free energy (ΔG0), enthalpy (ΔH0), and entropy (ΔS0) were also determined. The pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second-order rate equations (PFORE and PSORE, respectively) were tested to fit the kinetic data; the experimental results can be better described with PSORE. The regeneration of the loaded sorbents was demonstrated by using dilute HCl solution (distilled water at pH 3) as eluent for metal recovery.
