Recent Advances in Graphene Oxide-Based Anticorrosive Coatings: An Overview

The present review outlines the most recent advance in the field of anticorrosive coatings based on graphene oxide nanostructures as active filler. This carbonaceous material was extensively used in the last few years due to its remarkable assets and proved to have a significant contribution to composite materials. Concerning the graphene-based coatings, the synthesis methods, protective function, anticorrosion mechanism, feasible problems, and some methods to improve the overall properties were highlighted. Regarding the contribution of the nanostructure used to improve the capability of the material, several modification strategies for graphene oxide along with the synergistic effect exhibited when functionalized with other compounds were mainly discussed.

Advanced development of dairy farm waste-based biocarbon-reinforced unsymmetrical structured bio-phenolic polybenzoxazine composites

In the present work, an attempt has been made to develop cow manure carbon-reinforced hybrid biophenol-based benzoxazine composites for antifouling coating applications. Bio-based benzoxazine with unsymmetrical molecular structure was synthesized using the mixture of a combination of cardanol and eugenol with diaminodiphenyl methane and paraformaldehyde, and the hybrid-benzoxazine obtained was characterized using different analytical techniques, viz., Fourier transform infrared, nuclear magnetic resonance and MALDI mass. Bio-based benzoxazine was further reinforced with varying weight percentages (1, 3 and 5 wt%) of biocarbon derived from cow manure to obtain hybrid composite coatings. The hybrid benzoxazine matrix and composites were studied for their thermal behaviour, contact angle (CA), morphology, corrosion-resistant behaviour and antifouling character to utilize them as coatings materials for different industrial applications. Results obtained from different studies inferred that the biocarbon-reinforced composites possess an enhanced value of glass transition temperature (249°C), high char yield (38.4%), improved CA (105.6°), higher efficiency of corrosion protection against mild steel surface (98%) and improved antimicrobial activity.

Amino-Functionalized Lead Phthalocyanine-Modified Benzoxazine Resin: Curing Kinetics, Thermal, and Mechanical Properties

Phenol-diaminodiphenylmethane-based benzoxazine (P-ddm)/phthalocyanine copolymer was prepared by using P-ddm resin as matrix and 3,10,17,24-tetra-aminoethoxy lead phthalocyanine (APbPc) as additive. Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) were used to investigate the curing behavior, curing kinetics, dynamic mechanical properties, thermal stability, and impact strength of the prepared copolymers. The kinetic parameters for the P-ddm/APbPc blend curing processes were examined by utilizing the iso-conversional, Flynn–Wall–Ozawa, and Málek methods. The P-ddm/APbPc blends exhibit two typical curing processes, and DSC results confirmed that the blending of APbPc monomer can effectively reduce the curing temperature of P-ddm resin. The autocatalytic models also described the non-isothermal curing reaction rate well, and the appropriate kinetic parameters of the curing process were obtained. The DMA and impact strength experiments proved that the blending of APbPc monomer can significantly improve the toughness and stiffness of P-ddm resin, the highest enhancements were observed on 25 wt.% addition of APbPc, the recorded values for the storage modulus and impact strength were 1003 MPa and 3.60 kJ/m² higher, respectively, while a decline of 24.6 °C was observed in the glass transition temperature values. TGA curves indicated that the cured copolymers also exhibit excellent thermal stabilities.

Preparation of Cross-Linkable Zwitterionic Polybenzoxazine with Sulfobetaine Groups and Corresponding Zwitterionic Thermosetting Resin for Antifouling Surface Coating

This work demonstrates a cross-linkable zwitterionic polymer, the corresponding zwitterionic thermosetting resin, and their application for antifouling surface coating. The tertiary amine-containing benzoxazine group is utilized as a precursor to react with 1,3-propane sultone to introduce sulfobetaine moiety to benzoxazine group. The reaction route provides an effective approach for preparation of sulfobetaine-functionalized benzoxazines and the corresponding sulfobetaine-functionalized thermosetting resins of benzoxazines. The sulfobetaine-functionalized polybenzoxazine has been utilized as a coating material for ceramic porous membranes to impart protein-repelling characteristic to the membrane surface. In a filtration test on a Bovine serum albumin (BSA) aqueous solution, the sulfobetaine resin modified membrane shows a 96.2% of rejection rate and a 1680 ± 9 Lm^2-h^-1 of permeation flux at the first cycle test. In cycled measurements with membrane washing, the membrane shows a total flux decline ratio (R_t) and a reversible flux decline ratio (R_r) of about 46.9% and 43.1%, respectively. A high ratio of reversible fouling (R_r/R_t) of 91.9% is found, which supports the statement that the sulfobetaine-functionalized polybenzoxazine is an effective material to impart antifouling characteristic to porous materials for bioseparation and filtration.
