Abstract

The application of highly porous and 3D interconnected
microcellular
polyelectrolyte polyHIPE (PE-PH) monoliths based on (3-acrylamidopropyl)-trimethylammonium
chloride as soilless cultivation substrates for in vitro embryo culture
is discussed. The embryo axes isolated from chickpea seeds are inoculated
onto the surface of the monoliths and allowed to germinate. Germination
study show that the newly disclosed PE-PH substrate performs much
better than the conventionally used agar as the germination percentage,
shoot and root length, fresh and dry weight as well as the number
of leaves are enhanced. The PE-PHs exhibit a higher absorption capacity
of the plant growth medium, that is, 36 g·g–1 compared to agar, that is, 20 g·g–1, and
also survive autoclaving conditions without failing. The key advantage
over standard agar substrates is that they can be reused several times
and also without prior sterilization. These results suggest that PE-PHs
with exceptional absorption/retention properties and robustness have
great potential as soilless substrates for in vitro plant cultivation.

Abstract
Emulsion-templated, hydrophilic-oleophobic porous materials are promising for the removal of a small amount of water from oil-water mixtures, but the maneuver and complete collection of these porous materials are challenging. Herein, we report the fabrication of magnetic, hydrophilic-oleophobic polyHIPE composites from reactive Fe3O4 nanoparticle-stabilized high internal phase emulsions through simultaneous bulk polymerization of water-soluble monomers and interface-catalyzed polycondensation of 1H,1H,2H,2H-perfluorooctyltriethoxysilane. The resulting composites were hydrophilic-oleophobic, with water droplets rapidly absorbed (within 20 s), and exhibited designable magnetic responsiveness. The hydrophilicity-oleophobicity enabled water to be removed through selective absorption from oil-water mixtures (including surfactant-stabilized water-in-oil emulsions), with a high separation rate over 99%. The magnetic-responsiveness enabled both the dry and the swollen composites to be maneuvered in a remote and contactless manner and to be fully collected. Therefore, the magnetic, hydrophilic-oleophobic polyHIPE composites are excellent candidates for the removal of water from water-oil mixtures with complete collection.

Abstract
Most reported wearable electronic devices lack self-healing chemistry and flexible function to maintain stable energy output while irreversible damages and complex deformations. In this work, we report a dual-dynamic network electrolyte synthesized by micellar elastomers introduced into strong hydrogel matrix. The gel electrolyte is fabricated by physically cross-linking the borax-polyvinyl alcohol (B-PVA) network as tough matrix and poly (ethylene oxide) (PEO)-poly (propylene oxide) (PPO)-poly (ethylene oxide) (Pluronic) to frame elastic network, followed by immersion in potassium chloride solution. Under the action of dynamic borate ester bond and multi-network hydrogen bond, the as-prepared electrolyte exhibits high stretchability (1535%) and good self-healing efficiency. Based on the electrolyte, we assemble the interfacial compatible micro-supercapacitor (MSC) by multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) interdigital electrode printed on cellulosic paper by direct ink writing (DIW) technique. Thanks to the large specific area and compressive deformation resistance of cellulosic paper, the MSC with tightly interfacial contact achieves high volumetric capacitance of 801.9 mF cm−3 at the current density of 20 μA cm−2. In the absence of stimulation of the external environment, the self-healing MSC demonstrates an ideal capacity retention (90.43%) after five physical damaged/healing cycles. Our research provides a clean and effective strategy to construct wearable MSC.

Abstract
High-internal-phase emulsion-templated macroporous polymers (polyHIPEs) have attracted much interest, but their surface functionalization remains a primary concern. Thus, competitive surface functionalization via physical self-assembly of macrosurfactants was reviewed. Dendritic and diblock-copolymer macrosurfactants were tested, and the former appeared to be more topologically competitive in terms of solubility, viscosity, and versatility. In particular, hyperbranched polyethyleneimine (PEI) was transformed into dendritic PEI macrosurfactants through click-like N-alkylation with epoxy compounds. Free-standing PEI macrosurfactants were used as molecular nanocapsules for charge-selective guest encapsulation and robustly dictated the surface of a macroporous polymer through the HIPE technique, in which the macroporous polymer could act as a well-recoverable adsorbent. Metal nanoparticle-loaded PEI macrosurfactants could similarly lead to polyHIPE, whose surface was dictated by its catalytic component. Unlike conventional Pickering stabilizer, PEI macrosurfactant-based metal nanocomposite resulted in open-cellular polyHIPE, rendering the catalytic sites well accessible. The active amino groups on the polyHIPE could also be transformed into functional groups of aminopolycarboxylic acids, which could efficiently eliminate trace and heavy metal species in water.

Abstract
A series of syndiotactic polystyrene (sPS) monoliths with controllable shapes, nanofibrous structures, hierarchical pores, superhydrophobicity, high specific surface area, and high strength have been fabricated for the first time by solidifying nonaqueous high internal phase emulsions (HIPEs) through crystallization-induced gelation. The nonaqueous HIPEs were formed by dispersing glycerol in 1,2,4-trichlorobenzene stabilized by sulfonated sPS at a high temperature of 120 °C, and with sPS in the continuous phase, these HIPEs were solidified by cooling at room temperature to obtain sPS monoliths. The shapes of the sPS monoliths were controllable, and excitedly, nanofibrous structures were found at void walls, with fiber diameters ranging from 20 to 100 nm. The sPS monoliths exhibited pores in different scales: emulsion-templated voids at nearly 10 μm with pore throats ranging from 1 to 2 μm and macropores and mesopores between nanofibers, enabling the monoliths to exhibit extremely high specific surface area of up to 420 m2·g-1. The porous sPS monoliths were robust, and they did not fail even at a compressive strain of 70%, with Young's moduli ranging from 157.7 to 2638.0 kPa. The monoliths were superhydrophobic and oleophilic, with water contact angles over 150° and with oils absorbed rapidly. The superhydrophobicity and oleophilicity enabled the porous sPS monoliths to absorb bulk oils on the water surface, underwater oils, and even oils within oil-in-water emulsions. The monoliths absorbed a large amount of organic solvents, edible oils, and fuel oils with equilibrium liquid uptakes up to 81.3, 44.4, and 41.9 g·g-1 for chloroform, olive oil, and diesel, respectively. The liquid absorption was rapid, and the monoliths exhibited a relatively high reusability. These porous sPS monoliths were demonstrated to be a candidate for the applications of oil/water separation and/or oil spill cleanup.

Abstract
Pickering high internal phase emulsions (HIPEs) using micron-size polymeric particles as stabilizer were developed. By adding a small amount of surfactant to the Pickering HIPEs, macroporous polymers with a well-define open-cell structure were synthesized with these HIPEs as templates. Owing to the micron-size of the particles, the particle locations could be observed directly by laser scanning confocal microscopy. It was found that the excess and attached particles aggregated and formed thick particle layers around the droplets when the HIPE was stabilized solely by particles. These thick particle layers were extremely stable, and did not easily rupture during or after polymerization, which caused the resulting polymers to have a closed-cell structure. When a small amount of surfactant was added, it was found that the surfactant disaggregated the particles, leaving them well-dispersed in the continuous phase. Moreover, the surfactant tended to occupy the oil-water interface at the contact point of adjacent droplets, where the interconnecting pores were hence likely to be formed after consolidation of the continuous phase. This observation confirmed experimentally the mechanism of interconnecting pore formation in Pickering-HIPE-templated porous polymers proposed theoretically in previous works.
