An efficient method for straightforward phosphorylation of ethylene/vinyl alcohol copolymers using trialkyl phosphite/iodine

Modification of sulfonated poly(arylene ether nitrile) proton exchange membranes by poly(ethylene-co-vinyl alcohol)

The modification of the physicochemical properties of sulfonated poly(arylene ether nitrile) (SPAEN) proton exchange membranes was demonstrated by poly(ethylene-co-vinyl alcohol) (EVOH) doping (named SPAEN-x%). By controlling the temperature during membrane preparation, the side reactions of the sulfonic acid groups to form sulfonic acid esters were effectively prevented, greatly reducing the proton conductivity of the membranes. Due to the flexible chain of EVOH, SPAEN-8% showed a relatively high elongation of 30.2%, which enhanced the aromatic polymers' flexibility. The SPAEN-2% membrane exhibited proton conductivity of 166, 55, and 9.6 mS cm^-1 at 95%, 70%, and 50% relative humidity, respectively, higher than those of the other SPAEN-x% membranes and even comparable to that of Nafion 212. The water uptake, morphological study, and through-plane proton conductivity of the membranes were studied and discussed. The results suggest that EVOH doping can be used as an effective strategy to improve SPAEN-based proton exchange membranes' performance.

Design, Synthesis and Actual Applications of the Polymers Containing Acidic P-OH Fragments: Part 2-Sidechain Phosphorus-Containing Polyacids

Macromolecules containing acidic fragments in side-groups—polyacids—occupy a special place among synthetic polymers. Properties and applications of polyacids are directly related to the chemical structure of macromolecules: the nature of the acidic groups, polymer backbone, and spacers between the main chain and acidic groups. The chemical nature of the phosphorus results in the diversity of acidic >P(O)OH fragments in sidechain phosphorus-containing polyacids (PCPAs) that can be derivatives of phosphoric or phosphinic acids. Sidechain PCPAs have many similarities with other polyacids. However, due to the relatively high acidity of −P(O)(OH)2 fragment, bone and mineral affinity, and biocompatibility, sidechain PCPAs have immense potential for diverse applications. Synthetic approaches to sidechain PCPAs also have their own specifics. All these issues are discussed in the present review.

Repurposing Mitsunobu Reactions as a Generic Approach toward Polyethylene Derivatives

Broad scope of functionality and controllable degree of functionalization are intriguing goals for the development of polar-group-functionalized polyethylene materials. Herein, we propose a generic strategy of using widely available starting materials (i.e., poly(ethylene-co-vinyl acetate), EVA) and mild Mitsunobu functionalization conditions to prepare over 30 polyethylene derivatives. No noble transition metal catalysts (e.g., Ru, Mo, Pd, etc.) or corrosive/explosive reagents (e.g., HBr, NaN₃, C₂H₄, H₂, etc.) are used in the synthesis, while functional groups such as azide, aldehyde, norbornene, and thiol can be easily installed, with tunable content as high as 18 mol %. Using this practical method, we successfully prepared polyethylene-derivatized membranes with excellent antimicrobial and fluorescent properties.

Phosphorylated kraft lignin with improved thermal stability

The low cost, environmental friendliness, and reproducibility of kraft lignin (KL) make it a potential candidate for the development of new green material. The phosphorylation of KL can extend its application as a flame-retardant material. Herein, the phosphorylated kraft lignin (PKL) was systematically fabricated in a sustainable process by utilizing a green phosphating reagent, NH₄H₂PO₄, in the presence of urea. The influence of the reaction parameters, i.e., reaction time and temperature, and NH₄H₂PO₄/lignin ratio on the phosphorylation process were investigated. Advanced characterization techniques including ¹H NMR, ³¹P NMR, and XPS confirmed that the phosphorus groups were successfully introduced to lignin molecules. The active phenolic and aliphatic hydroxy groups of kraft lignin underwent a nucleophilic substitution reaction with the phosphate group to generate phosphorylated lignin. Compared with KL, PKL showed excellent thermal stability, and its maximum decomposition temperature was 620 °C compared with 541 °C for KL.
