A green cascade polymerization method for the facile synthesis of sustainable poly(butylene-co-decylene terephthalate) copolymers

Acid-triggered, degradable and high strength-toughness copolyesters: Comprehensive experimental and theoretical study

The popularization and widespread use of degradable polymers is hindered by their poor mechanical properties. It is of great importance to find a balance between degradation and mechanical properties. Herein, poly(butylene terephthalate) (PBT) modified by SPG diol from 10% to 40 mol% were synthesized through a two-step polycondensation reaction. Chemical structures, thermal properties, mechanical properties, viscoelastic behavior and degradation of poly(butylene terephthalate-co-spirocyclic terephthalate) (PBST) were investigated. The SPG could toughen the copolyesters and the elongation at break of PBST20 was up to 260%. Moreover, the introduction of SPG enables to provide an acid-triggered degradable unit in the main chain. PBSTs copolymers maintain stable structures in a neutral environment, and the degradation under acid conditions will be unlocked. As tailoring the content of SPG, the degradation rate of the chain scission in response to acid stimuli will be adjusted. The acid degradation was proved to be occurred at the SPG units in the amorphous phase by DSC, XRD, GPC and ¹H NMR tests. After the acid degradation, the hydrolysis rate will also be accelerated, adapting to the requirements of different degradation schedules. The plausible hydrolytic pathways and mechanisms were proposed based on Fukui function analysis and density functional theory (DFT) calculation.

Supermolecular Structure of Poly(butylene terephthalate) Fibers Formed with the Addition of Reduced Graphene Oxide

Nanocomposite fibers based on poly(butylene terephthalate) (PBT) and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) were prepared using a method able to disperse graphene in one step into a polymer matrix. The studies were performed for fibers containing four different concentrations of rGO at different take-up velocities. The supermolecular structures of the fibers at the crystallographic and lamellar levels were examined by means of calorimetric and X-ray scattering methods (DSC, WAXS, and SAXS). It was found that the fiber structure is mainly influenced by the take-up velocity. Fibers spun at low and medium take-up velocities contained a crystalline α-form, whereas the fibers spun at a high take-up velocity contained a smectic mesophase. During annealing, the smectic phase transformed into its α-form. The degree of transformation depended on the rGO content. Reduced graphene mainly hindered the crystallization of PBT by introducing steric obstacles confining the ordering of the macromolecules of PBT.

Cascade polymerizations: recent developments in the formation of polymer repeat units by cascade reactions

Traditionally, most polymerizations rely on simple reactions such as alkene addition, ring-opening, and condensation because they are robust, highly efficient, and selective. These reactions, however, generally only yield a single new C-C or C-O bond during each propagation step. In recent years, novel macromolecules have been prepared with propagation steps that involve cascade reactions, enabling various combinations of bond making and breaking steps to form more complex repeat units. These polymerizations are often challenging, given the requirements for high conversion and selectivity in controlled polymerizations, yet they provide polymers with unique chemical structures and significantly broaden the scope of how polymers can be made. In this perspective, we summarize the recent developments in cascade polymerizations, primarily focusing on single-component cascades (rather than multi-component polymerizations). Polymerization performance, monomer scope, and mechanisms are discussed for polymerizations utilizing radical, ionic, and metathesis-based mechanisms.
