Abstract
Overproduction of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in infected wounds induces a tremendous inflammatory reaction to delay wound healing. To address this problem, we designed a multifunctional polyacrylamide/PVA-based hydrogel containing synthesized poly(1-glycidyl-3-butylimidazolium salicylate) (polyGBImSal) and fabricated polydopamine-coated polyphenolic nanosheet (PDA@PNS) for wound dressing. The PDA@PNS particles were designed to induce I) antioxidant and anti-inflammatory features through ROS-scavenging and II) cell adhesive properties by the existing polydopamine into the hydrogels. The poly(ionic liquid)-based polyGBImSal was designed to allocate effective hydrogel antimicrobial activity. The fabricated hydrogel nanocomposites showed excellent properties in the swelling ratio, cell adhesiveness, protein adsorption, and anti-inflammatory, proving their general performance for application in wound healing. Furthermore, these hydrogels showed high antimicrobial activity (over 95 %) against three common wound-infecting pathogenic microbes: Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, and Candida albicans. The healing process of full-thickness dermal wounds in rats was accelerated by applying hydrogel nanocomposites with 0.5 wt% of PDA@PNS and 28 wt% of polyGBImSal. The wound closure contraction attained full closure, reaching 100 %, after 14 days, contrasted with the control group employing commercial wound dressing (Tegaderm), which achieved a closure rate of 68 % within the equivalent timeframe. These results make these hydrogel nanocomposites promising candidates for multifunctional wound dressing applications.

Abstract
The proper mix of nanocellulose to a dispersion of polar and nonpolar liquids creates emulsions stabilized by finely divided solids (instead of tensoactive chemicals) named Pickering emulsions. These mixtures can be engineered to develop new food products with innovative functions, potentially more eco-friendly characteristics, and reduced risks to consumers. Although cellulose-based Pickering emulsion preparation is an exciting approach to creating new food products, there are many legal, technical, environmental, and economic gaps to be filled through research. The diversity of different types of nanocellulose makes it difficult to perform long-term studies on workers' occupational health, cytotoxicity for consumers, and environmental impacts. This review aims to identify some of these gaps and outline potential topics for future research and cooperation. Pickering emulsion research is still concentrated in a few countries, especially developed and emerging countries, with low levels of participation from Asian and African nations. There is a need for the development of scaling-up technologies to allow for the production of kilograms or liters per hour of products. More research is needed on the sustainability and eco-design of products. Finally, countries must approve a regulatory framework that allows for food products with Pickering emulsions to be put on the market.

Abstract
Starch nanoparticles (SNPs) are generally defined as starch grains smaller than 600-1000 nm produced from a series of physical, chemical, or biologically modified starches. Many studies have reported the preparation and modification of SNPs, which are mostly based on the traditional "top-down" strategy. The preparation process generally has problems with process complexity, long reaction periods, low yield, high energy consumption, poor repeatability, etc. A "bottom-up" strategy, such as an anti-solvent method, is proven to be suitable for the preparation of SNPs, and they are synthesized with small particle size, good repeatability, a low requirement on equipment, simple operation, and great development potential. The surface of raw starch contains a large amount of hydroxyl and has a high degree of hydrophilicity, while SNP is a potential emulsifier for food and non-food applications.

Abstract
Citric acid (CA) treatment is a convenient, mild and environmentally friendly strategy to modify the composition, structure and function of starch through hydrolysis and esterification, which expands the application of starch in industry. In this paper, the effects of CA modification on amylose content, amylopectin chain length distribution, microscopic morphology, solubility and swelling ability, thermodynamic properties, gelatinization properties, digestibility properties, texture properties and the film-forming properties of starch were summarized. The application status and development trend of CA modified starch were reviewed, which has important implications for the targeted utilization of CA modified starch in the future.

Abstract
A macroporous dual-functional acid-base covalent organic polymer catalyst poly(St-VBC)-NH2-SO3H was prepared using high internal phase emulsion polymerization using vinylbenzyl chloride (VBC), styrene (St), and divinylbenzene (DVB) as substrates toluene as a porogenic solvent, and subsequent modification with ethylenediamine and 1,3-propane sultone. The role of various amounts of toluene as the porogenic solvent as well as the amount of 1,3-propane sultone (different ratio of acid/base sites) on the structure of the prepared materials have been carefully investigated. The prepared materials were characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), CHNS elemental analysis, energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX), elemental mapping, field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), and thermalgravimetric analysis (TGA). The catalytic activity of the poly(St-VBC)-NH2-SO3H series with different acid/base densities was assessed for one-pot cascade C-C bond-forming reactions involving deacetylation-Henry reactions. The poly(St-VBC)-NH2-SO3H(20) sample bearing 1.82 mmol/g of N (base site) and 1.16 mmol/g (acid site) showed the best catalytic activity. The catalyst demonstrated superior activity compared to the homogeneous catalysts, poly(St-DVB)-SO3H+EDA, poly(St-VBC)-NH2+chlorosulfonic acid, and poly(St-DVB)-SO3H+poly(St-VBC)-NH2 as the catalyst system. The optimized catalyst showed excellent catalytic performance with 100% substrate conversion and 100% yield of the final product in the one-pot production of β-nitrostyrene from benzaldehyde dimethyl acetal under cascade reactions comprising acid-catalyzed deacetalization and base-catalyzed Henry reactions. It was shown that these catalysts were reusable for up to four consecutive runs with a very slight loss of activity. The excellent performance of the catalyst was attributed to the excellent chemical and physical properties of the developed support since it provides an elegant route for preparing site-isolated acid-base dual heterogenized functional groups and preventing their deactivation via chemical neutralization.

Abstract
Pickering emulsions stabilized by micro/nanoparticles have attracted considerable attention owing to their great potential in various applications ranging from cosmetic and food industries to catalysis, tissue engineering and drug delivery. There is a growing demand to design "green" micro/nanoparticles for constructing stable Pickering emulsions. Micro/nanoparticles derived from the naturally occurring polysaccharides including cellulose, chitin, chitosan and starch are capable of assembling at oil/water interfaces and are promising green candidates because of their excellent biodegradability and renewability. The physicochemical properties of the micro/nanoparticles, which are determined by the fabricating approaches and/or post-modification methods, have a significant effect on the characteristics of the final Pickering emulsions and their applications. Herein, recent advances on Pickering emulsions stabilized by polysaccharides-based micro/nanoparticles and the construction of functional materials including porous foams, microcapsules and latex particles from these emulsions as templates, are reviewed. In particular, the effects of micro/nanoparticles properties on the characteristics of the Pickering emulsions and their applications are discussed. Furthermore, the obstacles that hinder the practical applications of polysaccharides-based micro/nanoparticles and Pickering emulsions as well as the prospects for the future development, are discussed.

Abstract
Nanostarch, as a food-grade Pickering emulsion stabilizer, has attracted wide attention owing to its biodegradability, nontoxicity, small size, and large specific surface area. In this review, the preparation, modification, and application of Pickering emulsions incorporating nanostarch are described. At present, methods for nanostarch preparation mainly include acid hydrolysis, acid hydrolysis combined with other treatments, nanoprecipitation, ultrasonication, ball milling, and cross-linking. Nanostarch is a promising Pickering emulsion stabilizer, and its emulsifying ability of nanostarch is significantly improved by hydrophobic modification. The hydrophobicity, charge, size, and content of nanostarch affect the emulsion stability. Future developments in this area of research include the efficient and environmentally friendly preparation of nanostarch as well as the control of its hydrophobicity via modification. Future studies should focus on the digestibility and storage stability of Pickering emulsions stabilized by nanostarch under different conditions.

Abstract
The interlacing of biopolymers and synthetic polymers is a promising strategy to fabricate hydrogel-based tissue scaffolds to biomimic a natural extracellular matrix for cell growth. Herein, open-cellular macroporous 3D scaffolds with a semi-interpenetrating network were fabricated through high internal phase emulsion templating. The scaffolds are prepared by (I) the curing of PEG diacrylate (PEGDAC) and gelatin methacrylate (GelMA) in the continuous aquatic phase of a coconut oil-in-water emulsion stabilized by GelMA nanoparticles, and (II) the removal of the internal phase. The effect of the main contributing parameters such as pH, GelMA content, and GelMA/PEGDAC weight ratio on the emulsion features was investigated systematically. Due to the isoelectric point of GelMA at around pH 6, the GelMA particle (aggregation) size decreased at both sides of pH from 1000 to 100–140 nm because of the increased number of positive and negative charges on GelMA. These GelMA nanoparticles were able to produce stable emulsions with narrowly distributed small emulsion droplets. Moreover, the stability and emulsion droplet size were enhanced and increased, respectively, with GelMA content increasing and GelMA/PEGDAC weight ratio decreasing. These trends lie in the prevented coalescence phenomenon caused by the improved viscosity and likely partially formed network by GelMA chains in the continuous phase. Hence, the following formulation was selected for scaffold preparation: φoil = 74%, pH = 12, GeMA = 4 wt%, and GelMA/PEGDAC = 10/8. Then, PCL in different contents was infiltrated into the scaffold to balance hydrophilicity and hydrophobicity. The cell culture assay proved that the scaffold with a pore size of 60–180 μm and containing 51.2 wt% GelMA, 10.3 wt% PEG, and PCL 27.2 wt% provided a suitable microenvironment for mouse fibroblast cell (L929) adhesion, growth, and spreading. These results show that this strategy suggests promising culture for tissue engineering applications. The interlacing of biopolymers and synthetic polymers is a promising strategy to fabricate hydrogel-based tissue scaffolds to biomimic a natural extracellular matrix for cell growth.![]()

Abstract
Novel composite hydrogels of poly(acrylamide) (PAAm) and starch, at different ratios, were studied as potential platforms for controlled release of amoxicillin. The composite hydrogels were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), and swelling kinetic measurements. The morphology analysis revealed the presence of starch granules well embedded within the PAAm network. The increase in starch content increased the rate of water uptake and the swelling degree at equilibrium. The amoxicillin release kinetics was sensitive to pH and temperature conditions. The in vitro bacterial growth inhibition of antibiotic-loaded hydrogels was tested though disc diffusion assays with Escherichia coli ATCC 25922, Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923, and a carbapenemase producer Pseudomonas aeruginosa strain. The optimal release profile at physiological conditions and the powerful bacteria growth inhibition effects of amoxicillin-loaded hydrogels evidenced its potential for biomedical applications, particularly in oral administration and the local treatment of bacterial infections.

Abstract
Tissue engineering (TE) aims to regenerate critical size defects, which cannot heal naturally, by using highly porous matrices called TE scaffolds made of biocompatible and biodegradable materials. There are various manufacturing techniques commonly used to fabricate TE scaffolds. However, in most cases, they do not provide materials with a highly interconnected pore design. Thus, emulsion templating is a promising and convenient route for the fabrication of matrices with up to 99% porosity and high interconnectivity. These matrices have been used for various application areas for decades. Although this polymer structuring technique is older than TE itself, the use of polymerised internal phase emulsions (PolyHIPEs) in TE is relatively new compared to other scaffold manufacturing techniques. It is likely because it requires a multidisciplinary background including materials science, chemistry and TE although producing emulsion templated scaffolds is practically simple. To date, a number of excellent reviews on emulsion templating have been published by the pioneers in this field in order to explain the chemistry behind this technique and potential areas of use of the emulsion templated structures. This particular review focusses on the key points of how emulsion templated scaffolds can be fabricated for different TE applications. Accordingly, we first explain the basics of emulsion templating and characteristics of PolyHIPE scaffolds. Then, we discuss the role of each ingredient in the emulsion and the impact of the compositional changes and process conditions on the characteristics of PolyHIPEs. Afterward, current fabrication methods of biocompatible PolyHIPE scaffolds and polymerisation routes are detailed, and the functionalisation strategies that can be used to improve the biological activity of PolyHIPE scaffolds are discussed. Finally, the applications of PolyHIPEs on soft and hard TE as well as in vitro models and drug delivery in the literature are summarised.
