Preparation and characterization of water-swellable hydrogel-forming porous cellulose beads

Urea/sodium hydroxide pretreatments enhance decomposition of maize straw in soils and sorption of straw residues toward herbicides

Because of the rigid crystalline structure and recalcitrant components, maize straw returned is slowly decomposed in soils. Straw residues are substantially accumulated in soils and pose detrimental impacts to crop plantation. Here we report the pretreatments of urea and NaOH (USH) to enhance maize straw decomposition in the field. The USH reagents interacted synergistically to destruct straw, mainly through breaking the rigid hydrogen bonding network and chemically hydrolyzing recalcitrant lignin. The synergy was evident for the USH reagents containing 6-8% urea and 0.1-1% NaOH under various temperature conditions (-20 °C to 25 °C). The USH (7%/0.1%) pretreatment resulted in notable enhancement (37%) of straw decomposition in the field within 6 months, superior to current biological-based treatments (6-28%). Moreover, this pretreatment posed no influence on the adsorption of straw residues collected at the early stage of decomposition (27 days) toward five commonly used herbicides. Those straw residues collected on 67 days and later exhibited high adsorption capacity, indicated by 0.5- to 4-folded increases in K_d values. Additionally, the impacts to soil pH and bacterial/fungal community were negligible. The USH pretreatments thus have practical interests in mitigating accumulation of straw residues in straw-returned soils.

Fermentation-Inspired Gelatin Hydrogels with a Controllable Supermacroporous Structure and High Ductility for Wearable Flexible Sensors

Supermacroporous hydrogels have attracted wide concern due to their comfort and breathability in wearable health-monitoring applications. Size controllable supermacroporous structure and excellent mechanical properties are the most important for its application. However, they are normally fabricated by the cryogelation method, which is difficult to control pore size and maintain flexibility. Here, yeast fermentation-inspired gelatin hydrogels with a controllable supermacroporous structure and excellent mechanical properties were fabricated for the first time. The pore size can be controlled by adjusting the content of glucose and yeast, the ratio of glucose to yeast, fermentation time, and gelatin content during fermentation. The hydrogels demonstrated a controllable pore size range from 100 to 400 μm and rapid swelling characteristics. The mechanical properties were maintained by soaking ammonium sulfate solution for 12 h, showing maximum tensile and compressive strains over 300 and 99%, respectively. This novel approach can be easily applied to the preparation of supermacroporous and high ductility hydrogels under mild conditions. Furthermore, conductive hydrogels combined supermacroporous structures with conductive polyaniline and reduced oxidized graphene, and silver nanowires were prepared as wearable flexible sensors. The obtained sensors maintain well-distributed porosity, breathability, and mechanical flexibility, also showing excellent conductivity of 2.4 S m-1. Finally, the sensors were successfully applied to detect physiological signals and human-computer interaction.

Synthesis, characterization, and selective dye adsorption by pH- and ion-sensitive polyelectrolyte galactomannan-based hydrogels

Three novel polyelectrolyte galactomannan hydrogels (PGHs) were fabricated by chemically crosslinking quaternary ammonium galactomannan (QAG) and carboxymethyl galactomannan (CMG), and employed for the removal of Congo Red (CR) and Methylene Blue (MB). Physicochemical characterization revealed that the PGHs are chemically and physically crosslinked. The PGHs are pH- and ion-sensitive, and their physical crosslinking can be destroyed by artificial urine; water swelling capacity (100.6-321.9 g/g dry gel) and artificial urine swelling capacity (35.9-80.5 g/g dry gel). The adsorption of CR and MB was studied and found to be pH-dependent and selective. The maximum adsorption capacities of CR and MB on the QAG and CMG gels are 1441 and 94.52 mg/g, respectively, and their adsorption kinetics and isotherm behavior obey the pseudo-second-order kinetics model and Langmuir isotherm model, respectively. The adsorption mechanism is dominated by electrostatic interactions and hydrogen bonding. Further, the PGHs have excellent salt resistance and are reusable.
