Physicochemical characterization of a diatomaceous upon an acid treatment: a focus on surface properties by inverse gas chromatography

Adsorption Properties of Diatomite Minerals on Glyceryl Monostearate for Antifogging of the Plastic Film

Adding an appropriate amount and the stable precipitation of surfactant on the inner surface of agricultural plastic greenhouse films can prevent the formation of water droplets on the inner surface of the film to reduce its harmful effects in the process of plant cultivation and production. In this work, for the stable precipitation of the surfactant glycerol monostearate, diatomite minerals from three origins in China were compared through structural analysis and adsorption performance. The effects of acid treatments and alkali treatments on the mineral structure were studied, and the adsorption mechanism of glycerol monostearate was further investigated. The results show that the structural characteristics of Jilin diatomite are more suitable as adsorbents for glyceryl monostearate adsorption. Because diatomite is resistant to acids but not alkalis, when diatomite is treated with an alkali, impurities on its surface can be removed and the hydroxyl group and specific surface area can be greatly increased. The adsorption capacity of glycerol stearate was increased to 218.4 mg/g, or 32.08%, over its pretreatment level. The results show that this is mainly the result of physical adsorption caused by van der Waals force imbalance and chemisorption caused by a small number of hydrogen bonds. In addition, the dripping performance of this composite dripping film with mineral diatomite was better than that of the commercial dripping film, which provided a theoretical basis for efficient mineral slow-release drip irrigation composite film.

Highly efficient adsorption of antibiotic ciprofloxacin hydrochloride from aqueous solution by diatomite-basic zinc chloride composites

The antibiotic ciprofloxacin (CIP) is used to treat a variety of bacterial infections, yet it poses significant health risks to aquatic environments. While adsorption is a promising technique for CIP removal, current adsorption capacities remain limited. In this study, we introduce a diatomite and basic zinc chloride composite (ZnHC-Dt) prepared using a straightforward deposition method, with the ability to achieve highly efficient ciprofloxacin removal. ZnHC-Dt is characterized using field emission scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller method (BET). We also assess the zeta potential. The optimized ZnHC-Dt adsorbent, achieved at a mass ratio of 0.45 with ZnHC/(ZnHC+Dt), is adopted with a CIP adsorption capacity of 831.96 mg/g at 25 °C, broad pH adaptability (within 3.0-10.0), rapid adsorption rate (reaching equilibrium in 4 h), and stable performance under Na+ ionic strength. The CIP adsorption process follows pseudo-second-order kinetics and aligns well with the Langmuir adsorption model. The high adsorption capacity of ZnHC-Dt can be attributed to electrostatic attraction, hydrogen bonding, surface complexation, and available adsorption sites. During the desorption process, the CIP removal rate retains 65.33% effectiveness after five cycles. The results suggest that ZnHC-Dt holds significant potential for CIP removal in aqueous solutions.

Investigation of the Surface Properties of Hexagonal Boron Nitride and Boron Phosphate by Inverse Gas Chromatography at Infinite Dilution

The boron-based ceramics namely hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) and boron phosphate (BPO4) were synthesized and characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction analysis. The surface properties of h-BN and BPO4 were examined by inverse gas chromatography method. The dispersive surface energy and the acidic-basic character of h-BN, and BPO4 surfaces were estimated by the retention time with probes such as n-hexane, n-heptane, n-octane, n-nonane, n-decane, acetone, ethyl acetate, dichloromethane, chloroform and tetrahydrofuran at infinite dilution region. The dispersive surface free energies calculated using both Schultz and Dorris-Gray methods, decreased linearly with increasing temperature. The specific adsorption free energy and the specific adsorption enthalpy corresponding to acid-base surface interactions were determined. By correlating with the donor and acceptor numbers of the probes, the acidic and the basic parameters of the h-BN and BPO4 were calculated. The values obtained for and parameters indicated that h-BN has a basic character, whereas BPO4 has an acidic character.

Photocatalytic Bacterial Inactivation of Acinetobacter baumannli on Cu/TiO2/Diatomite

Cu4Ti2O/TiO2/diatomite with double interface Cu4Ti2O/TiO2 and rutile/anatase heterojunction were fabricated, which demonstrated good antibacterial activity (100%) against Acinetobacter baumannii. Cu/TiO2/diatomite prepared under optimum preparation conditions (added diatomite, 0.005 g; Cu, 0.005 g; reaction temperature, 180 °C; reaction time, 8 h) exhibited high antibacterial activity (100%) against A. baumannii. For the Cu/TiO2/diatomite powders, their structural, compositional, optical and morphological traits were characterized by XRD, SEM, TEM, XPS, BET, FTIR, Mapping, and DRS. It was shown that Cu/TiO2/diatomite under optimum conditions consisted of the double interface Cu4Ti2O/TiO2 and rutile/anatase heterojunction with the narrowest band gap and largest BET surface area, pore size, and pore volume. Then, it could exhibit the best photocatalytic activity.

Quantitative and Qualitative Changes in the Genetic Diversity of Bacterial Communities in Anaerobic Bioreactors with the Diatomaceous Earth/Peat Cell Carrier

This paper analyses the impact of the diatomaceous earth/peat (DEP; 3:1) microbial carrier on changes in the bacterial microbiome and the development of biofilm in the anaerobic digestion (AD) of confectionery waste, combined with digested sewage sludge as inoculum. The physicochemical properties of the carrier material are presented, with particular focus on its morphological and dispersion characteristics, as well as adsorption and thermal properties. In this respect, the DEP system was found to be a suitable carrier for both mesophilic and thermophilic AD. The evaluation of quantitative and qualitative changes in the genetic diversity of bacterial communities, carried out using next-generation sequencing (NGS), showed that the material has a modifying effect on the bacterial microbiome. While Actinobacteria was the most abundant cluster in the WF-control sample (WF—waste wafers), Firmicutes was the dominant cluster in the digested samples without the carrier (WF-dig.; dig.—digested) and with the carrier (WF + DEP). The same was true for the count of Proteobacteria, which decreased twofold during biodegradation in favor of Synergistetes. The Syntrophomonas cluster was identified as the most abundant genus in the two samples, particularly in WF + DEP. This information was supplemented by observations of morphological features of microorganisms carried out using fluorescence microscopy. The biodegradation process itself had a significant impact on changes in the microbiome of samples taken from anaerobic bioreactors, reducing its biodiversity. As demonstrated by the results of this innovative method, namely the BioFlux microfluidic flow system, the decrease in the number of taxa in the digested samples and the addition of DEP contributed to the microbial adhesion in the microfluidic system and the formation of a stable biofilm.

Characteristics of the Properties of Absodan Plus Sorbent and Its Ability to Remove Phosphates and Chromates from Aqueous Solutions

The aim of the research was to characterize the parameters of the diatomite sorbent Absodan Plus as well as to assess its suitability for the adsorption of chromates and phosphates from acidic aqueous solutions simulating the conditions occurring in some types of industrial wastewater. The scope of the research includes XRD, SEM, BET, and PZC analyses, and 3D observation of commercial diatomite granules and batch tests to determine the constants of kinetics and the equilibrium of chromates and phosphates adsorption. Absodan Plus is a diatomite commercial material containing an amorphous phase (33%) and is also the crystalline phase of quartz, hematite, and grossite. The material is macro- and mesoporous and its specific surface area is about 30 m²/g. Its PZC is around pH = 5.5–6.0 and in an acidic environment is able to adsorb the anions. The saturation of the adsorbent surface with molecules of the adsorbed substance occurs after 2 h for chromates and 2.5 h for phosphates. The maximum adsorption capacity of Absodan Plus in terms of phosphorus and chromium amounts to 9.46 mg P/g and 39.1 mg Cr/g, respectively. As shown by XRD analysis, Absodan Plus contains an admixture of hematite, which can support the removal of chromium and phosphorus.

Eco-Friendly and Effective Diatomaceous Earth/Peat (DEP) Microbial Carriers in the Anaerobic Biodegradation of Food Waste Products

This article aims to present the results of research on anaerobic digestion (AD) of waste wafers (WF-control) and co-substrate system—waste wafers and cheese (WFC-control), combined with digested sewage sludge. The aim of this study was to assess the physicochemical parameters of the diatomaceous earth/peat (DEP; 3:1) carrier material and to verify its impact on the enzymatic activity and the process performance. The experiment was conducted in a laboratory, in a periodical mode of operation of bioreactors, under mesophilic conditions. The results of analyses of morphological-dispersive, spectroscopic, adsorption, thermal, and microbiological properties confirmed that the tested carrier material can be an excellent option to implement in biotechnological processes, especially in anaerobic digestion. As part of the experiment, the substrates, feedstock, and fermenting slurry were subjected to the analysis for standard process parameters. Monitoring of the course of AD was performed by measuring the values of key parameters for the recognition of the stability of the process: pH, VFA/TA ratio (volatile fatty acids/total alkalinity), the content of NH4+, and dehydrogenase activity, as an indicator of the intensity of respiratory metabolism of microorganisms. No significant signals of destabilization of the AD process were registered. The highest dehydrogenase activity, in the course of the process, was maintained in the WFC + DEP system. The microbial carrier DEP, used for the first time in the anaerobic digestion, had a positive effect on the yield of methane production. As a result, an increase in the volume of produced biogas was obtained for samples fermented with DEP carrier material for WF + DEP by 13.18% to a cumulative methane yield of 411.04 m3 Mg−1 VS, while for WFC + DEP by 12.85% to 473.91 m3 Mg−1 VS.

Effects of Siliceous Natural Nanomaterials Applied in Combination with Foliar Fertilizers on Physiology, Yield and Fruit Quality of the Apricot and Peach Trees

Siliceous natural nanomaterials (SNNMs), i.e., diatomaceous earth and natural zeolites, have a nanoporous structure with large active surfaces that adsorb cations or polarized molecules. Such nanoporous feature determines the effects related to SNNM utilization as low-risk plant protectants and soil improvers. This work used SNNMs from Romanian quarries as carriers for foliar fertilizers applied to stone-fruit trees, apricot and peach. We determined the effects of SNNMs on the physiology, yield and fruit quality of the treated stone-fruit trees. SNNM application determined impacts specific to the formation of particle films on leaves: reduced leaf temperature (up to 4.5 °C) and enhanced water use efficiency (up to 30%). Foliar fertilizers' effects on yield are amplified by their application with SNNMs. Yield is increased up to 8.1% by the utilization of SNNMs with foliar fertilizers, compared to applying foliar fertilizer alone. Diatomaceous earth and natural zeolites promote the accumulation of polyphenols in apricot and peach fruits. The combined application of SNNMs and foliar fertilizer enhance the performance of peach and apricot trees.

La-Doped ZnTiO3/TiO2 Nanocomposite Supported on Ecuadorian Diatomaceous Earth as a Highly Efficient Photocatalyst Driven by Solar Light

Currently, there is great interest in the use of TiO2 for photocatalytic remediation of wastewater. Doping, heterojunction, and immobilization on porous materials are effective methods to improve the photocatalytic efficiency of this semiconductor oxide. In this study, ZnTiO3/TiO2 (ZTO) and ZnTiO3/TiO2/La (ZTO/La) nanocomposites were successfully prepared and immobilized on diatomaceous earth (DE). The composition and texture of the composites prepared were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray fluorescence (XRF), diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM-EDX), and specific surface area (SSA). The adsorption capacity and photocatalytic activity of the composites were determined via degradation of methylene blue (MB) in batch reactors. The materials evaluated were prepared in the shape of 0.2 cm (diameter) and 1.0 cm (length) cylindrical extrudates. The results indicate that the ZTO/La-DE composite exhibited higher efficiency for the removal of MB under solar irradiation than both ZTO-DE and DE. The pseudo-second-order model and the Langmuir isotherm model were better suited to explain the adsorption process. The highest degradation percentage of MB obtained was 96% after 150 min of irradiation. The results indicate that synthesized composite could be used for the removal of cationic dyes in wastewater.

Methodological Aspects of Obtaining and Characterizing Composites Based on Biogenic Diatomaceous Silica and Epoxy Resins

Diatomaceous earth are sediments of unicellular algal skeletons with a well-defined hierarchical structure. Despite many tests conducted on systems using diatomaceous earth and epoxy resins, we can find many differences in the methods of acquisition and characteristics of the composite, which may considerably affect the results. In our study, we have conducted tests to verify the impact of the method of obtaining samples and the degassing of the composite on its mechanical properties and standard deviation. The samples were cast in glass moulds and silicone moulds and then subjected to testing for their mechanical and functional properties, imaging with the use of an optical microscope and a scanning electron microscope. The tests have shown that, for samples cast in glass moulds, there is no heterogeneity within the area of the tested sample, as in the case of samples cast in silicone moulds. Silicone moulds allow for quite effective self-degassing of the resin due to the large area-to-mass ratio, and the small remaining air vesicles have a limited effect on the mechanical properties of the samples. The filler used also played a significant role. For systems containing base and rinsed diatomite, it is clear that the degassing of mixtures increases the tensile strength. For treated diatomite, the elongation at break grew along with increasing filler concentration, while for base diatomite, the improvement was observed for flexural strength and impact strength. A non-modified epoxy resin shows a tensile strength at 19.91 MPa (silicone mould cast). At the same time, the degassed, glass mould-cast systems containing 12% of base and rinsed diatoms showed a tensile strength of 27.4 MPa and 44.7 MPa, respectively. We have also observed that the higher the filler concentration, the higher were the tensile strength values, which for the rinsed diatoms reached over 55.1 MPa and for the base diatoms were maximum of 43.8 MPa. The tests, therefore, constitute a set of guidelines and recommendations for testing with the use of fillers showing an extended inner structure.

Characterization and efficient dye discoloration of Algerian diatomite from Ouled Djilali-Mostaganem

A series of naturally occurring diatomaceous earth samples from Ouled Djilali, Mostaganem (Lower Chelif basin, Algeria northwestern), were investigated, which are characterized by the expansion and evolution during the Messinian age. Four varieties of diatomite were distinguished, characterized, and successfully used to adsorb methylene blue dye in aqueous medium. Several properties and characteristics of diatomite have been outlined using analytical methods such as X-ray fluorescence spectrometry, X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), N2 adsorption–desorption (BET), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), as well as other complementary analysis tests. Results showed that silica and calcium carbonates were the main constituents of the diatomite samples (ranging between 32.8 and 61.5% for SiO2; and 13.8–25.9% for CaO), with a slight difference in chemical composition between selected samples. Typical for all diatomite samples, the XRD analysis suggests a high mass quantity of amorphous phase (Opal); high content of crystal phase was also registered. FTIR allowed determining the basic characteristic silica bands regarding diatomite samples. While the BET and SEM investigations revealed that the studied diatomite material has a highly porous structure and was very rich in diatoms. The maximum adsorption capacity of methylene blue that was calculated from the Langmuir isotherm model was 116.59 mg/g (for Ouled Djilali: OD05 sample) at 25 °C and pH 7.0. The diatomite from Mostaganemian (Ouled Djilali) deposit may find promising applications as low-cost adsorbent for dyes removal from water.

High CO Adsorption Performance of CuCl-Modified Diatomites by Using the Novel Method “Atomic Implantation”

An atomic implantation method was used to modify diatomite with CuCl. The CuCl/diatomite samples were characterized by different techniques, including FTIR, XRD, BET, SEM-TEM, EDX, and CO-TPR. Characterization results revealed the formation of CuCl particles of 50–60 nm highly dispersed on diatomite surface. CO adsorption measurements showed that 2CuCl/diatomite exhibits the highest CO adsorption capacity among all CuCl-modified samples with diatomite. Its CO adsorption capacity of 2.96 mmol/g at 30°C is 10 times higher than that of unmodified diatomite (0.29 mmol/g). The CO adsorption on CuCl-modified diatomites was found to fit well with the Langmuir–Freundlich model.

The Effect of an Adsorbent Matrix on Recovery of Microorganisms from Hydrocarbon-Contaminated Groundwater

The microbial degradation of recalcitrant hydrocarbons is an important process that can contribute to the remediation of oil and gas-contaminated environments. Due to the complex structure of subsurface terrestrial environments, it is important to identify the microbial communities that may be contributing to biodegradation processes, along with their abilities to metabolize different hydrocarbons in situ. In this study, a variety of adsorbent materials were assessed for their ability to trap both hydrocarbons and microorganisms in contaminated groundwater. Of the materials tested, a porous polymer resin (Tenax-TA) recovered the highest diversity of microbial taxa in preliminary experiments and was selected for additional (microcosm-based) testing. Oxic and anoxic experiments were prepared with groundwater collected from a contaminated aquifer to assess the ability of Tenax-TA to adsorb two environmental hydrocarbon contaminants of interest (toluene and benzene) while simultaneously providing a surface for microbial growth and hydrocarbon biodegradation. Microorganisms in oxic microcosms completely degraded both targets within 14 days of incubation, while anoxically-incubated microorganisms metabolized toluene but not benzene in less than 80 days. Community analysis of Tenax-TA-associated microorganisms revealed taxa highly enriched in sessile hydrocarbon-degrading treatments, including Saprospiraceae, Azoarcus, and Desulfoprunum, which may facilitate hydrocarbon degradation. This study showed that Tenax-TA can be used as a matrix to effectively trap both microorganisms and hydrocarbons in contaminated environmental systems for assessing and studying hydrocarbon-degrading microorganisms of interest.

Effect of diatomite addition on crystalline phase formation of TiO2 and photocatalytic degradation of MDMA

Different composites TiO₂@SiO₂ were obtained by in situ synthesis of TiO₂ on Algerian diatomite. Our results show that there is an optimum amount of diatomite which leads to mixed TiO₂ phase with enhanced photocatalytic activity.

Characterization of surface properties of chitosan/bentonite composites beads by inverse gas chromatography

Chitosan/bentonite (CSBt) composites beads were prepared by dropwise of a solution containing chitosan and bentonite to an alkaline NaOH solution. Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction analysis, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, XPS and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller BET analysis have been used to provide new insights on the composition and morphology of CSBt composites beads surface. In this study, inverse gas chromatography (IGC) was implemented to characterize physico-chemical properties of CSBt composites surface. IGC at infinite dilution (IGC-ID) was used to understand the effect of CS on dispersive component of the surface energy of the bentonite. The increasing amount of CS leads to significantly decrease of Bt γ_s^d emphasizing the Bt coating with CS. The IGC at finite concentration (IGC-FC) was also implemented allowing us to reach several parameters such as: specific surface area with organic probes and the distribution functions of the adsorption energy sites on the solid surface. In this case, the most significant decreases were observed in the specific surface area obtained with the octane and isopropanol probes. The distribution function of the adsorption energy sites obtained with isopropanol revealed the decrease in the number of the high energy sites with increase of CS/Bt mass ratio.

Mineral Materials Coated with and Consisting of MnOx-Characteristics and Application of Filter Media for Groundwater Treatment: A Review

For groundwater treatment, the technologies involving oxidation on MnOx filter bed are beneficial, common, and effectively used. The presence of MnOx is the mutual feature of filter media, both MnOx-coated mineral materials like quartz sand and gravel, chalcedonite, diatomite, glauconite, zeolite, or anthracite along with consisting of MnOx manganese ores. This review is based on the analysis of research and review papers, commercial data sheets, and standards. The paper aimed to provide new suggestions and useful information for further investigation of MnOx filter media for groundwater treatment. The presented compilations are based on the characteristics of coatings, methods, and conditions of its obtaining and type of filter media. The relationship between the properties of MnOx amendments and the obtained purification effects as well as the commonly used commercial products, their features, and applications have been discussed. The paper concludes by mentioning about improving catalytic/adsorption properties of non-reactive siliceous media opposed to ion-exchange minerals and about possible significance of birnessite type manganese oxide for water treatment. Research needs related to the assessment of the use MnOx filter media to heavy metals removal from groundwater in field operations and to standardize methodology of testing MnOx filter media for water treatment were identified.

Treated residue from aluminium lamination as adsorbent of toxic reactive dyes - a kinetic, equilibrium and thermodynamic study

The residue generated in the aluminium cold lamination (TTR) was submitted to a direct burning and then it was calcined at 500°C. BET, FTIR, SEM with EDX and TGA techniques were performed to characterize the adsorbent before and after the adsorption. BET analysis showed that TTR specific surface area was 55.37 m² g^-1 and there were no significant changes after the adsorptive process. Afterwards, the TTR was applied as adsorbent of the reactive Drimaren Blue (DB), Drimaren Red (DR) and Drimaren Gold (DG). Its employment consists in a sustainable alternative for the treatment of textile wastewater, once the TTR was used as low-cost adsorbent of textile dyes. Kinetic studies showed that the process reached the equilibrium state between 5 and 10 min. The pseudo-second-order model better fitted the adsorption kinetics, with kinetic rate constants 10.51, 34.71 and 31.51 mg min g^-1 for DB, DR and DG respectively. The equilibrium experiments were performed to obtain the adsorption parameters for each dye; moreover, the maximum adsorption capacity was 6.27, 0.42 and 1.23 mg g^-1 for DB, DR and DG, respectively. Thermodynamics studies allowed to obtain the values of enthalpy for DB, DR and DG, -7.90, 14.03 and -17.75 kJ mol^-1, respectively. Furthermore, the negative values of Gibbs free energy confirmed the spontaneity of the adsorption. The results point to the physisorption characteristic of the process, in which the temperature negatively influenced the adsorption for the DB and DG; the opposite result was observed for the DR.
