Synthesis of novel α-Fe2O3 nanorods without surfactant and its electrochemical performance

A dimethyl disulfide gas sensor based on nanosized Pt-loaded tetrakaidecahedralα-Fe2O3nanocrystals

Surface modification by employing precious metals is one of the most effective ways to improve the gas-sensing performance of metal oxide semiconductors. Pureα-Fe₂O₃nanoparticles and Pt-modifiedα-Fe₂O₃nanoparticles were prepared sequentially using a rather simple hydrothermal synthesis and impregnation method. Compared with the originalα-Fe₂O₃nanomaterials, the Pt-α-Fe₂O₃nanocomposite sensor shows a higher response value (R_a/R_g = 58.6) and a shorter response/recovery time (1 s/168 s) to 100 ppm dimethyl disulfide (DMDS) gas at 375 °C. In addition, it has better selectivity to DMDS gas with the value of more than 9 times higher than the other target gases at 375 °C. This study indicates that the Pt-α-Fe₂O₃nanoparticle sensor has good prospects and can be used as a low-cost and effective DMDS gas sensor.

Improved delivery system for celastrol-loaded magnetic Fe3O4/α-Fe2O3 heterogeneous nanorods: HIF-1α-related apoptotic effects on SMMC-7721 cell

Fe₃O₄/α-Fe₂O₃ heterogeneous nanorods were prepared by a rapid combustion method with α-FeOOH nanorods as precursors. Fe₃O₄/α-Fe₂O₃ heterogeneous nanorods with a saturation magnetization of 33.2 emu·g^-1 were obtained using 30 mL of absolute ethanol at a calcination temperature of 300 °C. Their average length was around 140 nm, and average diameter was about 20 nm. To improve the dispersion characteristics of the Fe₃O₄/α-Fe₂O₃ heterogeneous nanorods in aqueous solution, citric acid and PEG were applied to modify the nanorod surface via the Mitsunobu reaction. The results showed that the hydrodynamic size range of Fe₃O₄/α-Fe₂O₃/CA-PEG-celastrol was 250-500 nm, the surface potential was -15 mV, and the saturation magnetization was approximately 23 emu·g^-1. The drug loading capacity of Fe₃O₄/α-Fe₂O₃/CA-PEG was larger than the non-PEG modified version. Fe₃O₄/α-Fe₂O₃/CA-PEG-celastrol had slow-release characteristics and was sensitive to changes in pH. Application of a magnetic field significantly promoted the inhibition of SMMC-7721 human liver cancer cell growth after treatment with Fe₃O₄/α-Fe₂O₃/CA-PEG-celastrol. Celastrol and Fe₃O₄/α-Fe₂O₃/CA-PEG-celastrol increased the production of reactive oxygen species in SMMC-7721 cells and promoted apoptosis and apoptosis-related proteins (p53, Bax, Bcl-2) were also changed. In addition, the expression of hypoxia-inducible factor 1α (HIF-1α) was enhanced. We may conclude that celastrol-loaded magnetic Fe₃O₄/α-Fe₂O₃ heterogeneous nanorods may be applied in the chemotherapy of human cancer with good biocompatibility and delivery.

A Multiplexed Self-Powered Dual-Photoelectrode Biosensor for Detecting Dual Analytes Based on an Electron-Transfer-Regulated Conversion Strategy

Due to the inherent mechanism limitation of photocatalytic fuel cell based self-powered biosensors (PFC-SPBs), it was difficult to distinguish the power density of various photoactive materials or recognition events in one detection process, which made it lack multitarget quantitative capacity. In order to solve this problem, we proposed an electron-transfer-regulated conversion strategy for the construction of multiplexed PFC-SPBs. Herein, the n-type CdS/Fe₂O₃ nanorod array (NR) heterojunction and p-type CuBr semiconductor were used as photoactive materials to prepare the photoanode and photocathode. Based on the appropriate Fermi level differentiation between these two photoelectrodes, a self-powered sensing platform driven by visible light without external energy supply was achieved. In this design, two kinds of common and easily coexisting mycotoxins OTA and AFB1 acted as model analytes. The coupling of "signal off" and "signal on" was realized by controlling the electronic transmission on the interface between the photoanode and photocathode, so as to achieve the simultaneous detection of two mycotoxins. This work established a proof-of-concept for the integration of a dual-photoelectrode with dual-assay that could provide the innovative inspiration for the formation of a general multiplexed self-powered sensing platform.
