Numerical study for tableting process in consideration of compression speed

A numerical study of the tableting process using a finite element method (FEM) is important to quantitatively understand the structural change inside the tablet and the mechanism of tableting failures such as capping, picking, lamination, and sticking. In the pharmaceutical field, the Drucker-Prager Cap (DPC) model is used most widely to demonstrate the mechanical behavior of the powder during tableting. The DPC model, however, cannot consider compaction speed, although the compaction speed has a large impact on the tablet strength and tableting failures. In the present study, a combined novel model using both the DPC and Perzyna models, which incorporates a visco-plastic behavior considering the compression speed, was proposed and numerical simulation was conducted. Cellulose, lactose, and acetaminophen were selected as model powders. The DPC-Perzyna model parameters were determined from experimental compaction tests, unconfined compression tests, and tension tests. The calculated loading curves agreed with the experimental data under different compaction speeds, in addition the high compression speed resulted in less plastic deformation and much residual stress. It was demonstrated that the DPC-Perzyna model proposed in the present study was useful to analyze the tableting process when considering compression speed.

Impact of die wall material on the mechanical properties of paracetamol tablets

Tablet quality can be affected by material, configuration and design of the tooling which comprise punches and dies. Much research attention had centred around punches, with very little reported on the dies. Dies with modified bore lining materials or inserts are available for special applications. However, the influence of such die types on tablet properties and the compaction process has not been well studied. Often, the reason for selecting dies with harder lining material is for improved wear resistance. In this study, flat-faced and convex-faced tablets were produced from paracetamol granules using dies with different bore inserts. Tablet properties and response parameters of the compaction process were evaluated to understand the impact of die mechanical and surface properties on the compacts formed. Compaction pressure was found to have the greatest impact on tablet elastic recovery (r ≥ 0.96, p < 0.01 in all bivariate correlations) and thus affecting the tensile strength. Choice of die inserts could impact the mechanical properties of convex-faced paracetamol tablets, particularly at high compaction pressures.

Numerical Modeling for Simulation of Compaction of Refractory Materials for Secondary Steelmaking

The purpose of this work is to simulate the powder compaction of refractory materials, using the discrete element method (DEM). The capability of two cohesive contact models, implemented in different DEM packages, to simulate the compaction of a mixture of two refractory materials (dead burnt magnesia (MgO) and calcined alumina (Al₂O₃)) was analyzed, and the simulation results were compared with experimental data. The maximum force applied by the punch and the porosity and final shape quality of the compact were examined. As a starting point, the influence of Young's modulus (E), the cohesion energy density (CED), and the diameter of the Al₂O₃ particles (D) on the results was analyzed. This analysis allowed to distinguish that E and CED were the most influential factors. Therefore, a more extensive examination of these two factors was performed afterward, using a fixed value of D. The analysis of the combined effect of these factors made it possible to calibrate the DEM models, and consequently, after this calibration, the compacts had an adequate final shape quality and the maximum force applied in the simulations matched with the experimental one. However, the porosity of the simulated compacts was higher than that of the real ones. To reduce the porosity of the compacts, lower values of D were also modeled. Consequently, the relative deviation of the porosity was reduced from 40-50% to 20%, using a value of D equal to 0.15 mm.
