Effects of Interfacial Hydroxylation Microstructure on Quartz Flotation by Sodium Oleate

Quartz, a common inorganic nonmetallic mineral, is usually removed or purified by beneficiation, normally flotation. Given the strong polarity of the quartz surface, it is easy to hydrate to form a hydroxylation layer, which makes it impossible to float quartz with sodium oleate (OL) used alone. An ideal flotation method for quartz is preactivation with Ca²⁺, followed by collection with OL. Herein, the effects of surface hydroxylation on the adsorption of the anionic collector OL on the quartz surface before and after Ca²⁺ activation are systematically investigated by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The results show that the displacement adsorption of surface hydroxyl substituted by OL^- is not feasible in thermodynamics, and the OL^- can only bind to the H atoms of the hydroxylated quartz surface via hydrogen bonds, namely, hydrogen binding adsorption. Due to the electrostatic repulsion and steric hindrance effect induced by the surface hydroxylation structure, the adsorption ability of OL^- on the quartz surface mediated by hydroxyl bridges is very weak, which is insufficient to realize quartz floating. However, Ca²⁺ ions are easily adsorbed on the hydroxylated quartz surface, providing favorable active sites for subsequent adsorption of OL^-, thus becoming a credible solution for the industrial flotation of the strong hydrophilic mineral quartz. These findings shed some new insights for accurately understanding the flotation mechanism of strongly hydrophilic oxide minerals and are beneficial to promoting the development of mineral flotation fundamentals.

Effects of Al(III) Ions at Magnetite Flotation from Quartz by Dodecylamine Al(III)

The flotation separation of magnetite and quartz is a long-term challenge for the beneficiation industry. For high-quartz magnetite, conventional flotation shows poor separation effect, resulting in the waste of resources and low flotation efficiency. In this paper, dodecylamine acts as a collector and Al(III) ions in water act as a depressant to selectively separate magnetite and quartz at high alkalinity. The experimental results are analyzed by a micro-flotation experiment, solution chemical calculation, zeta potential, contact angle measurement, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The results of micro-flotation experiments showed that Al(III) ions in water inhibited magnetite more strongly than quartz. The calculation results of solution stoichiometry and zeta potential showed that the phase formed by Al(III) ions on the surface of magnetite and quartz are mainly Al(OH)3(s), which covers the surface of magnetite and quartz, The contact angle measurement results showed that with the addition of Al(III) ions, the contact angle of magnetite varies significantly than that of quartz, and the floatability of magnetite is lower than that of quartz. The FT-IR results further indicated that the addition of Al(III) ions could hinder the adsorption of dodecylamine on the magnetite surface. Meanwhile, the addition of Al(III) ions has no obvious effect on the adsorption of dodecylamine on the quartz surface.

Novel Insights into the Hydroxylation Behaviors of α-Quartz (101) Surface and its Effects on the Adsorption of Sodium Oleate

A scientific and rigorous study on the adsorption behavior and molecular mechanism of collector sodium oleate (NaOL) on a Ca2+-activated hydroxylated α-quartz surface was performed through experiments and density functional theory (DFT) simulations. The rarely reported hydroxylation behaviors of water molecules on the α-quartz (101) surface were first innovatively and systematically studied by DFT calculations. Both experimental and computational results consistently demonstrated that the adsorbed calcium species onto the hydroxylated structure can significantly enhance the adsorption of oleate ions, resulting in a higher quartz recovery. The calculated adsorption energies confirmed that the adsorbed hydrated Ca2+ in the form of Ca(H2O)3(OH)+ can greatly promote the adsorption of OL− on hydroxylated quartz (101). In addition, Mulliken population analysis together with electron density difference analysis intuitively illustrated the process of electron transfer and the Ca-bridge phenomenon between the hydroxylated surface and OL− ions. This work may offer new insights into the interaction mechanisms existing among oxidized minerals, aqueous medium, and flotation reagents.

Effect of ultrasound on bubble-particle interaction in quartz-amine flotation system

In this study, the effect of ultrasound (US) on the quartz-amine flotation system was investigated in detail by considering various surface chemistry techniques. The effect of ultrasound on particle size, shape factor, and surface roughness were characterized by using Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area measurements and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analyses. The contact angle and bubble-particle attachment time, as well as adsorption density measurements was carried out to evaluate the effect of ultrasound on quartz surface wetting ability. In addition, atomic force microscopy (AFM) analyses were conducted, and finally micro-flotation studies were performed. As a result, it was found that the micro-flotation recovery at 2 × 10^-5 M dodecyl amine hydrochloride (DAH) concentration increased from 45.45% to 63.64% with 30 W ultrasonic application at conditioning step. However, the micro-flotation recovery decreased to 37.50% when the ultrasonic power increased to 150 W. The results showed some effect of ultrasound on particle size, particle shape, and surface roughness in some extent. The increase in the contact angle and the decrease in the bubble-particle attachment time were observed. A slightly high adsorption density was measured. All these show a positive effect of ultrasound on quartz flotation with amine as a collector.

Effects of Cations/Anions in Recycled Tailing Water on Cationic Reverse Flotation of Iron Oxides

It is well known that reverse flotation performance of iron oxides is affected by water quality. Since many potential variations among water sources recycling in a mineral processing plant bring unpredictable effects on the flotation system of iron oxides: disturbing ions/compounds, pH, hardness, residual reagents, etc. In this study, the recycled tailing water from a local plant, characteristically constituting of Ca2+, Mg2+, Na+, K+, Al3+, Fe3+, Cl−, SO42− etc., was introduced into the cationic reverse flotation process of an iron ore. A series of bench flotation tests using iron ores, micro-flotation tests using pure fine quartz, water chemical analyses, and zeta potential measurement were conducted with the objective of identifying the possible influences of both cations and anions in the recycled tailing water on the flotation performance. The flotation results pointed out that the cation with higher valency had more severe influences on the recovery of iron oxides. The formation of the pH-dependent surface complexes on mineral surfaces, for example, Fe(OH)+, Fe(OH)2+, and Fe(OH)3 resulted from Fe3+ ions adsorption, contributed to the less negative zeta potentials of the quartz, and consequently weakened its interaction with the amine collector. It is worthy to note that SO42− ions seem to have a more positive effect on the recovery of iron oxides than Cl− ions. This is probably attributed to the formation of inner/outer- sphere surface complexes on the iron oxides, inhibiting the dissolution of the iron ions/species, and the coordination with these cations from the recycled tailing water, shielding their disturbances in the flotation.
