Electrode-coated alumina separators for lithium-ion batteries - effect of particle size and distribution of alumina powders

Manipulating the Nanophase Separation of a Polymer-Salt Microfluid Generates an Advanced In Situ Separator for Component-Integrated Energy Storage Devices

A polymer separator plays a pivotal role in battery safety, overall electrochemical performance, and cell assembly process. Traditional separators are separately produced from the electrodes and dominated by porous polyolefin thin films. In spite of their commercial success, today's separators are facing growing challenges with the increasing demand on the device safety and performance. As an attempt to address this urgent need, here, we propose a concept of in situ separator technology by manipulating the two-dimensional (2D) microfluid nanophase separation (2D-MFPS) of a poly(vinylidene difluoride)/lithium salt solution during drying. Particularly, nanophase separation is effectively regulated by low humidity, salt type, and compositions. For application studies, this 2D-MFPS is directly performed onto commercial electrodes under drying conditions with low humidity to fabricate a high-performance in situ separator with thickness and porous structures comparable to those of commercial Celgard separators. This in situ separator shows superior performance in high-temperature stability and wetting capability to a variety of liquid electrolytes. Finally, pouch cells with this in situ separator technology are successfully assembled with an extremely simplified separator-stacking-free process and demonstrate stable cycle performance due to the well-controlled porous structures and electrode-separator interface.

Designing a Bimodal BaTiO3 Artificial Layer to Boost the Dielectric Effect toward Highly Reversible Dendrite-Free Zn Metal Anodes

With the growing interest in suppressing greenhouse gas emissions from fossil fuel combustion, the implementation of electrical energy storage devices for efficiently utilizing renewable energy is expanding worldwide. Zn-ion batteries are attractive for energy storage because of their safety, eco-friendliness, high energy density, and low cost. However, their commercialization is hindered by the poor rechargeability of the zinc anode because of Zn dendrite growth and hydrogen evolution. Herein, we present the application of an artificial layer composed of bimodal BaTiO₃ particles on Zn metal to boost the dielectric properties and thus enhance the reversibility of Zn anodes during long-term cycling. The BaTiO₃ layer induces electric polarization under external electric fields, causing the Zn ions to move sequentially toward the Zn anode. Moreover, its mechanical characteristics alleviate the volume changes between the BaTiO₃ layer and Zn metal. Consequently, Zn dendrite growth is effectively inhibited, and the electrochemical performance is significantly improved in Zn|Zn symmetric cells, resulting in a low overvoltage (39 mV) and stable cycling (800 h) at 1 mA cm^-2. Moreover, the Zn-ion full cell using an α-MnO₂ cathode exhibits consistent capacity retention up to 380 cycles. This study demonstrates a new strategy to economically and readily suppress dendrite formation by using bimodal dielectric particles as artificial layers to stabilize metal-based batteries.

Draining Over Blocking: Nano-Composite Janus Separators for Mitigating Internal Shorting of Lithium Batteries

Catastrophic battery failure due to internal short is extremely difficult to detect and mitigate. In order to enable the next-generation lithium-metal batteries, a "fail safe" mechanism for internal short is highly desirable. Here, a novel separator design and approach is introduced to mitigate the effects of an internal short circuit by limiting the self-discharge current to prevent cell temperature rise. A nano-composite Janus separator-with a fully electronically insulating side contacting the anode and a partially electronically conductive (PEC) coating with tunable conductivity contacting the cathode-is implemented to intercept dendrites, control internal short circuit resistance, and slowly drain cell capacity. Galvanostatic cycling experiments demonstrate Li-metal batteries with the Janus separator perform normally before shorting, which then results in a gradual increase of internal self-discharge over >25 cycles due to PEC-mitigated shorting. This is contrasted by a sudden voltage drop and complete failure seen with a single layer separator. Potentiostatic charging abuse tests of Li-metal pouch cells result in dendrites completely penetrating the single-layer separator causing high short circuit current and large cell temperature increase; conversely, negligible current and temperature rise occurs with the Janus separator where post mortem electron microscopy shows the PEC layer successfully intercepts dendrites.
