Interaction between fine particles of fluorapatite and phosphoric acid unraveled by surface spectroscopies

Use of a natural rock material as a precursor to inhibit corrosion of Ti alloy in an aggressive phosphoric acid medium

The mechanism of interaction between magnesite mineral and phosphoric acid (0.001-0.5 M) in addition to the determination of the protective properties for Ti alloy (working electrode) in phosphoric acid both with and without an inhibitor have been investigated by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and potentiodynamic polarization measurements. Results of electrochemical tests show that the corrosion resistance of titanium alloy in phosphoric acid solution only increased and hydrogen production decreased by either decreasing acid concentration or increasing immersion time associated with the thickening of the oxide film formed on the alloy surface. On adding magnesite, the corrosion resistance of Ti alloy is enhanced by increasing the phosphoric acid concentration (0.001-0.5 M) due to the formation of sparingly soluble magnesium phosphate film on the alloy surface that inhibits the effect of increasing hydrogen evolution reaction due to the pH value decreases. The increasing adsorption behavior of the magnesite inhibitor and decreasing its diffusion were deduced from EIS measurements. Thus, the addition of 3% magnesite minimizes the corrosion by forming a new protective film (Mg3(PO4)2), which differs from the traditional passive film and prevents the effect of the increase of hydrogen evolution. The surface morphology and chemical composition of the tested alloy were determined using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform Infra-Red spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray Fluorescence (XRF) and In situ Raman spectroscopy.

Interaction Behavior between Coarse and Fine Particles in the Reverse Flotation of Fluorapatite and Dolomite

The precondition for efficient flotation of middle- to low-grade phosphate ore is the dissociation of apatite from gangue minerals through fine grinding. However, fine gangue minerals, such as dolomite, have a lower hardness and are thus easily overground and converted into slime during the grinding stage. The effect of -10 μm dolomite fines (Dol-10μm) on the flotation of -75 + 25 μm dolomite (Dol-75+25μm) and -75 + 25 μm fluorapatite (FAp-75+25μm) from a detailed mechanism was investigated by microflotation tests, cryo-electron microscopy analysis, contact angle measurements, bubble-particle attachment test, and EDLVO theory. It was found that Dol-10μm significantly reduced the recovery of Dol-75+25μm and FAp-75+25μm. The Dol-10μm particles could decrease the flotation recovery of Dol-75+25μm particles by masking on their surfaces, thus reducing the hydrophobicity of mineral surfaces and preventing them from floating. Furthermore, Dol-10μm particles were easily adsorbed on the FAp-75+25μm surface and could not be effectively floated, which results in fine dolomite being mixed into the concentrate at the bottom of the tank, thereby reducing the selectivity of reverse flotation for phosphate ore. The interaction energy calculation showed that the presence of NaOL led to an attractive interaction force between Dol-10μm and Dol-75+25μm, as well as between Dol-10μm and FAp-75+25μm. As a result, Dol-10μm particles presented a nonselective aggregation with Dol-75+25μm and FAp-75+25μm particles, explaining the phenomenon of "slime coating" and the depressing effect of dolomite fines on phosphate reverse flotation.

Immobilization of Cytochrome C by Benzoic Acid (BA)-Functional UiO-66-NO2 and the Enzyme Activity Assay

Recently, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are considered to be the moderate hosts for the bio-enzymes owing to their unique 3D pores and controllable surface affinity to the target molecules. In this work, the benzoic acid (BA)-modulated UiO-66-NO₂ was introduced, and cytochrome c (Cyt C) was chosen as the target enzyme to evaluate the immobilization efficiency of the resulting UiO-66-NO₂-BA. The immobilization conditions including pH, adsorption time, and temperature and the initial concentrations of BA were optimized. The adsorption kinetics and thermodynamics were analyzed to further explore the enhanced adsorption mechanism. It is worth noted that all the UiO-66-NO₂-BA exhibited evidently enhanced adsorption capacities in comparison with the unmodified UiO-66-NO₂ due to the formation of the chemical bonds between the UiO-66-NO₂-BA and cytochrome C, indicating the positive roles of BA modification. Finally, the activities of the immobilized cytochrome C were assessed by using the catalytic oxidation of ABTS in the presence of H₂O₂, which reactions were also conducted over the free cytochrome C for comparison. The evidently improved stability under definite pH range, prolonged durability against the organic solvents, and the good reusability of the immobilized cytochrome C highlight the prospect applications of functional MOF immobilized enzymes in the practical catalytic reactions.
