Large-scale cross-sectional study of relationships between somatic cell count and milking-time test results in different milking systems

Exploring the impact of biosecurity measures on somatic cell score in mountain dairy farms considering the CLASSYFARM system

Biosecurity plays a crucial role in preventing the introduction of infectious diseases to a herd as well as the spread of diseases within or between animals and herds. In particular, biosecurity measures are crucial for maintaining animal health and reducing the need for the application of antibiotic substances for fighting the rising antibiotic resistance. The object of this cross-sectional study was to investigate the presence of biosecurity measures and their association with milk quality parameters, with a special focus on somatic cell count (SCC) - an indicator for udder health -, in small-scale mountain dairy farms. Therefore, for the very first time, the CLASSYFARM system was considered, which is a computer platform integrated into the Italian national veterinary portal, that processes a significant amount of data from various sources collected in the field or from other information systems (e.g. animal welfare, health status, biosecurity, antimicrobial use, slaughterhouse information). A total of 169 dairy farms were included in the study. Biosecurity measures, based on 15 questions required in the CLASSYFARM welfare assessment protocol, as well as information about husbandry systems, milking systems and pasture practices were gathered and combined with milk yield data, provided by the South Tyrolean dairy association. Farms only scored 44.00 points on average in a scoring system from 0.00 to 100.00 points that was be able to summarize 15 different biosecurity measures in one index. Our results show a clear negative correlation (-0.713) between the biosecurity index and somatic cell score (SCS) indicating that a higher level of biosecurity, which reflects the presence of biosecurity measures within a farm, is associated with lower SCC levels. Furthermore, we found significant correlations between SCS and milk production (-0.629), confirming that udder health is linked to higher milk production. Fat, protein, and the fat-to-protein ratio showed a positive correlation with SCS (0.281, 0.146, 0.106), likely to be caused by a concentration shift effect (dilution effect). Husbandry system, breed, milking system, and pasture practices seem to have an impact as well, but the main factor was the biosecurity score. This study highlights the importance of implementing biosecurity measures for ensuring animal health and thus productivity and quality in milk production, even in small-scale farms, which are characterized by limited structure availability and smaller herds compared to big dairy enterprises in the lowlands.

Vacuum Dynamics as an Alternative Method for Detection of Bimodal Milk Ejection in Dairy Cows

We investigated the relationship between vacuum dynamics and milk flow curve characteristics using portable vacuum and milk flow recording devices, respectively, for the assessment of bimodal milk flow curves in dairy cows. For this purpose, we analyzed 241 vacuum and milk flow curve recordings that we collected concomitantly during eight milking center evaluations on five New York dairy farms. We found that vacuum dynamics could be a suitable measure to assess bimodal milk flow curves in dairy cows.

Abstract

The primary objective of our study was to assess the ability of a vacuum recorder to detect the presence of bimodal milk flow curves in dairy cows compared with a portable milk flow meter. In a cross-sectional study, 241 individual cow milking observations were analyzed. We simultaneously collected (1) individual cow vacuum events during milking using portable vacuum recorders, and (2) individual cow milk flow curves by attaching a portable milk flow meter to the same milking unit. Presence of bimodality was assessed with the vacuum recorder visually (BIM_VA) and with the gold standard method of a milk flow meter through automatic detection (BIM_LA). Kappa statistics revealed moderate agreement between BIM_VA and BIM_LA [κ, 95% confidence intervals (95% CI) = 0.59 (0.46–0.71)]. Diagnostic test statistics for BIM_VA for detection of bimodality indicated moderate performance for sensitivity [0.65 (0.52–0.76)] and positive predictive value [0.71 (0.58–0.82)] and high values for specificity [0.92 (0.87–0.95)] and negative predictive value [0.93 (0.84–0.93)]. We conclude that milking vacuum dynamics are a suitable measure to assess bimodal milk flow curves in dairy cows.

Relationship between dairy cows' hind leg activity and vacuum records during milking

In a number of dairy farms, a restlessness of hind legs of cows during milking can be observed for no apparent reason. Previous studies have associated the hind leg activity of cows with mental or physical discomfort. Aim of this study was to investigate whether the observed hind leg activity was influenced by the milking process. The analysis was performed for total milking period and also separately for the following milking periods: let-down, main milk flow and over-milking. The following variables were analyzed for their influence on dairy cows' hind leg activity: the vacuum level in the MPC and SMT, the length of the milking periods, the vacuum curve type, bimodal curves and the presence of teat-end hyperkeratosis. In turn, it was also investigated whether the cows' hyperkeratosis is influenced by milking duration, length of milking periods or by the vacuum level in the SMT. Measurements and observations were done in ten milking parlors, each visited twice. Four milking units per parlor were equipped with vacuum loggers (VaDia 2.0, BioControl AS, Norway). One observer recorded hind leg activity per up to four cows, using the following categories: (1) stepping (claw raised < 15 cm) and (2) kicking (claw raised > 15 cm). A powerful, purposive kick to milking unit/milker was classified as p-kick (3) initially. Due to a small number of p-kicks, they were added to the number of kickings for further analysis. The analyses showed that none of the milking process-related variables had a significant influence on the dairy cows' prevalence to show hind leg activity. Although the prevalence was not influenced, the type of hind leg activity was. The hind leg activity kicking was observed at significantly higher average mouthpiece chamber vacuum levels than steppings. Cows showing kickings had a higher degree of teat-end hyperkeratosis than those showing steppings. The degree of teat-end hyperkeratosis was related to the milking duration.
