Abstract
Introduction Various factors including body weight-associated treatment cost may influence the probability of dispensing antibiotics to dogs in first-opinion practice, but their effect on specific drug choice remains unclear. Methods Multiple membership regression modeling was used to investigate the probability of dispensing 12 different antibiotics to dogs of different weights in the context of various disease presentations, using anonymized data obtained from electronic health records of 18 clinics between 2020 and 2022. Data from 14,259 dogs were analyzed. Results Treatment choice varied significantly with animal weight. Higher body weight was associated with an increased likelihood of dispensing lower cost antimicrobials such as amoxicillin and trimethoprim sulfonamide, while use of higher cost antimicrobials such as cefovecin was strongly biased to smaller animals. However, these effects were limited when restricted treatment options were available for the target condition. Conclusion This work demonstrates that anticipated financial costs may result in different treatment choices for canine patients depending on their body weight. Further work is needed to understand the impact of financial pressures on veterinarians' treatment choices, and the implications for the optimization of antimicrobial stewardship in first opinion practice.

Abstract
Sheep are important for food and livelihood security in sub-Saharan Africa, and maximizing lamb weight gain while minimizing mortality is essential to improve production. Using the Menz sheep breeding villages of Amhara region in Ethiopia as a case study, the weight gain and mortality rate of 208 lambs were monitored during their first 5 months of life. The study was conducted in intervention and control villages, where the intervention villages were part of community-based breeding programmes and had participated in various projects aiming to improve sheep production and management. Multivariable linear regression analysis was conducted to detect associations between weight gain from birth to 1 month, and birth to 5 months, and different lamb and ewe characteristics, farmer education, application of management routines, and presence of village level sheep management interventions. In general, lambs from intervention villages, without certain signs of diseases, whose mothers were 2 years or older, had a body condition score of more than 2 on a 5-point scale, and who originated from flocks where disease prevention strategies had been implemented, had gained more weight. Overall lamb mortality was 6.8% with most deaths occurring before 1 month of age. This study highlights that health interventions in ewes improve lamb survival and weight gain and that the care of lambs during the first month of life is crucial for overall herd productivity.

Severity and prevalence of small lungworm infection on three South Australian farms and associations with sheep carcass characteristics. Vet Parasitol 2021; 296:109503. Abstract
This field and abattoir study assessed the association of the severity and prevalence of small lungworm lesions with the carcass characteristics of 1332 lambs and adult sheep bred on three farms in southeast SA. Liveweight and measures of lungworm infection were measured on farm, then lung lesions and carcass characteristics assessed at slaughter. The overall prevalence of small lungworm lesions at slaughter was 79 % (928/1177; 95 % CI 76, 81), with a prevalence of 87 % (569/658; 95 % CI 84, 89) in lambs, and 69 % (359/519; 95 % CI 65, 73) in adults, respectively. Small lungworm infected lambs and adults had a similar hot standard carcass weight and dressing percentage compared to non-infected animals, both overall and within their respective cohort. Overall, the mean carcass weight for non-infected and infected lambs was 23.4 kg (95 % CI 18, 29), and 23.6 kg (95 % CI 18, 29), respectively, with a mean difference of 0.2 kg (95 % CI -0.4, 0.8; P = 0.5). Mean carcass weight for non-infected and infected adults was 21.3 kg (95 % CI 15, 28), and 21.5 kg (95 % CI 15, 28), with a mean difference of 0.2 kg (95 % CI -0.5, 0.9; P = 0.5). This study confirmed a very high prevalence of small lungworm lesions in sheep bred on farms in this region of SA, but their hot standard carcass weights were not reduced by these lesions. Additional information to compare the presence of lesions with productivity within an individual was collected at slaughter which provided more detailed information than is currently collected by routine abattoir surveillance. The limitations of the currently available diagnostic tests for small lungworm were also demonstrated. This indicated a need for the development of more sensitive tests to assess lungworm infections both on farm and at the abattoir. Currently, farmers in this region are concerned about the very high prevalence of small lungworm in their sheep, but this study provides reassurance that the presence of mild lesions does not reduce production.

Abstract
This study compares the utility of a commercially available multiplex q-PCR assay for serotyping A1, A2, and A6 M. haemolytica serotypes with indirect hemagglutination, for determining the relative distribution of M. haemolytica capsular types associated with respiratory disorders in cattle, sheep, and goats. For the 129 isolates analyzed, both q-PCR and IHA assays exhibited nearly complete agreement for capsular types A1 (k = 0.965) and A2 (k = 0.888) and substantial agreement for A6 (k = 0.801). Despite the overall good performance of the commercial q-PCR, its effectiveness differed between the host origin of the isolates. The serotype was identified by q-PCR in 83.3 % of cattle, 77.8 % of goat, and 53.8 % of sheep isolates. Combining the results of both methods, A1 was the most prevalent in cattle and sheep (55.6 % and 22.25 %, respectively) but was not detected in goats, A2 was the most prevalent in goats (61.1 %) and the second most prevalent in cattle (16.7 %) and sheep (20.5 %). The prevalence of A6 was 7.4 %, 5.1 %, and 16.7 % in cattle, sheep, and goats, respectively. Other capsular types determined exclusively by IHA were A16 in cattle, A9 in goats, and A7, A8, A9, and A13 in sheep. Capsular type diversity was greater in sheep (H = 0.601) than in cattle (H = 0.408) and goat (H = 0.330) isolates. The commercial multiplex q-PCR is a valuable tool, alternative to IHA, for identifying isolates of capsular types A1, A2, and A6, the most frequent serotypes of M. haemolytica associated with respiratory disease in ruminants. However, when testing sheep isolates it should be complemented with immunological assays due to the wider range of serotypes implicated.

Abstract
Mastitis is an important problem in meat-producing sheep, but few studies have investigated the transmission dynamics of mastitis pathogens in these animals. The objective of this study was to describe the pathogens causing intramammary infections (IMI) in suckler ewes, their effect on somatic cell count, and the dynamics of these IMI in early lactation. We enrolled 15 sheep flocks early after lambing and selected ewes in each flock that were sampled twice with a 3-wk interval. Milk samples from both glands of each ewe were bacteriologically cultured, and somatic cell count was measured. Non-aureus Staphylococcus spp. were the most prevalent culture results. Somatic cell counts were most strongly increased in ewes infected with Mannheimia haemolytica, whereas staphylococci, including Staphylococcus aureus, were associated with a moderate increase in somatic cell count. The proportion of udder halves that remained culture-positive with Staphylococcus spp. during the 3-wk sampling interval was moderate, but M. haemolytica infections were stable during this time period. A substantial number of new infections were seen in the early lactation study period for non-aureus Staphylococcus spp., Staph. aureus, and Corynebacterium spp., but not for M. haemolytica or Streptococcus spp. The number of new IMI of Staph. aureus was associated with the number of Staph. aureus-infected udder halves in the flock at the first sampling moment, indicative of contagious transmission. Altogether, we show that substantial transmission happens in early lactation in suckler ewes, but that the dynamics differ between pathogen species. More research is needed to further describe transmission in different stages of lactation and to identify transmission routes, to develop effective interventions to control mastitis.
