Abstract
Milk recording is a critical tool in dairy farming, providing individual cow information. When used effectively, this data contributes to on-farm productivity, herd health management decisions and supports prudent veterinary prescribing of antimicrobials. Although an industry and government priority, uptake has been relatively slow in Ireland. This multi-methods, three-part study aimed to gain a comprehensive understanding of the benefits to farm performance, and factors driving uptake of milk recording on Irish dairy farms. It involved an economic analysis of N=516 farms from 2008-2019, a workshop with N=26 stakeholders and an online survey of N=197 non-milk-recording farmers. Quantitative and qualitative data were analysed using econometric models and thematic analysis respectively. Results were synthesised using the COM-B model to gain a deeper understanding of what drives the target behaviour. The study revealed that agricultural education, farm location, farm specialisation in dairy and membership of a farmer discussion group were the main factors influencing uptake of milk recording. Milk recording was associated with a €39.04/cow increase in gross margin, a 177.58 litres/cow increase in milk yield and a reduction of 13,450 cells/ml in bulk milk tank somatic cell count readings. Infrastructural constraints, cost, lack of benefits and workload were the most reported perceived barriers to milk recording by farmers. The Behaviour Change Wheel illustrates how to utilise findings and systematically develop future interventions to increase milk recording uptake. This study highlights the importance of a multi-methods approach to agricultural technology adoption and the need for evidence-based methodology when developing behaviour change interventions.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Reducing antibiotic use in production animal systems is one strategy which may help to limit the development of antimicrobial resistance. To reduce antimicrobial use in food-producing animals, it is important to first understand how antibiotics are used on farm and what barriers exist to decreasing their use. In dairy production systems, mastitis is one of the most common reasons for administering antimicrobials. Therefore, it is important to understand the motivations and behaviours of dairy farmers in relation to the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of mastitis. MATERIALS AND METHODS In this study, we interviewed a sample of dairy farmers and dairy industry professionals from the major dairying regions of eastern Australia regarding their current practices used to diagnose, treat, and control subclinical and clinical mastitis. Inductive thematic analysis was used to code interview transcripts and identify the recurrent themes. RESULTS Four overarching themes were identified: (1) the challenges associated with the detection and diagnosis of clinical mastitis, including with laboratory culture, (2) the motivations behind treatment decisions for different cases, (3) decisions around dry cow therapy and the role of herd recording, and (4) concerns regarding the development of antimicrobial resistance. DISCUSSION This study identifies several challenges which may limit the ability of Australian dairy farmers to reduce antimicrobial use on farm, such as the need for rapid and reliable diagnostic tests capable of identifying the pathogenic causes of mastitis and the difficulties associated with conducting herd recording for the implementation of selective dry cow therapy. Industry professionals were concerned that farmers were not using individual cow records to aid in treatment decisions, which could result in unnecessary antimicrobial use. The results of this study can act as the basis for future research aimed at assessing these issues across the broader Australian dairy industry.

Abstract
The CellCheck Dry Cow Consult (DCC) was developed by the CellCheck Technical Working Group to enable farmers to engage with their nominated vet to develop farm-specific selective dry cow therapy (SDCT) plans, where appropriate. This study evaluated the effect of the DCC on farmer decision-making around dry cow therapy, and the udder health impact of implementing SDCT, in study herds over the 2019 and 2020 dry periods. The DCC was a 3-h consult, delivered and funded as part of the Targeted Advisory Service on Animal Health (TASAH). Herds that completed a DCC were invited to register for a Dry Cow Review the following year. The combined data set for analysis across both years comprised of 439 herds and 25,357 cows. Available herd size ranged from 25 to 800. The median SCC of cows dried off with teat sealant only was 47,000 cells/ml before drying off in 2019 and 48,000 cells/ml at first milk recording in 2020, and 43,000 cells/ml before drying off in 2020 and 39,000 cells/ml at first milking recording in 2021. Following both the 2019 and 2020 dry periods, cows tended to converge toward a similar median SCC early in the following lactation, irrespective of prior dry cow treatment strategy. The uptake of SDCT was greater in Review herds, with 21% of cows receiving teat sealant only in 2020, compared with 16.3% of cows in herds participating in a Consult for the first time in 2020. At an individual cow level, in both years dry period new infection rate (NIR) was approximately 2.7% higher for cows treated with teat sealant only, than for those treated with both dry cow antibiotic tubes and teat sealant, and 1.2% higher than cows treated with antibiotic only. Regardless of treatment, there was a significant association between increasing parity and the risk of a dry period new infection. Increasing herd size had a statistically significant effect on the risk of dry period new infection rates. At a herd level, there was no statistically significant increase in NIR when SDCT was used compared with herds where blanket dry cow therapy was used. While not without risk, SDCT can be successfully implemented in Irish herds; however, constant attention to hygiene and management is essential. Though there are challenges to face, facilitating continued farmer education and engagement with professional guidance will be important.

Abstract
This observational study aimed to explore the association of farmer-driven selective dry cow therapy (DCT), milking routine and dry cow management practices with somatic cell count (SCC) in early lactation cows from 21 commercial dairy herds. Milking routine practices evaluated referred to cow preparation for milking, in-lactation mastitis management and recording. Dry cow management practices related to dry cow environment and cleaning, dry-off procedure, milk cessation strategy and calving environment. Data from 2,016 multiparous cows in 21 commercial spring-calving grazing dairy herds were available for the study. Herd owners self-reported DCT (the assignment and administration of DCT was at the discretion of the herd owners with no involvement from the research team), management practices during milking and the dry period. Cow-level last test-day SCC records in 2020 [range = 105 to 285 d in milk (DIM)] and first test-day records in 2021 (range = 5 to 60 DIM) were obtained from milk recording databases. Quarter-level milk sampling was carried out on all cows in late lactation of 2020 (range = 240 to 261 DIM) for bacterial culturing. Bacteriological results were used to define cows with intramammary infection (IMI) when ≥ 1 quarter sample resulted in bacterial growth and there were no contaminated samples from that cow. Mixed model analyses were used to evaluate the association of selective DCT, milking routine and dry cow management practices with cows' first test-day log 10 SCC (logSCC) in 2021. At dry-off in 2020, 47.6% of the cows were administered an internal teat sealant alone (ITS) while 52.4% were administered an antibiotic plus an internal teat sealant (AB+ITS). The mean herd-level percentage of cows with IMI was 19.7% (range = 9.8% to 39.5%); Staphylococcus aureus accounted for the majority of cow-level IMI (89.9%, 357/397). Between herds, the proportion of cows administered ITS ranged from 17.7% (14/79; in a herd with an IMI prevalence of 10.1%) to 86.8% (66/76; in a herd with an IMI prevalence of 27.6%). In total, 11.8% (105/889) and 29.8% (292/980) of cows that were administered ITS or AB+ITS had an IMI in late lactation 2020, respectively. The mean untransformed SCC at the last test-day in 2020 of cows administered ITS and AB+ITS was 55,000 and 197,200 cells/mL, respectively. The statistical analysis showed a significant interaction between selective DCT and milk yield at last test-day in 2020; cows with a milk yield of 15 kg and administered ITS had a 0.1 higher (untransformed SCC of 19,000 cells/mL higher) first test-day logSCC compared with cows administered AB+ITS. Additionally, greater parity, IMI in late lactation, higher log SCC at the last test-day in 2020 and longer dry periods were associated with higher logSCC at the first test-day in 2021. The current study identified cow- and herd-level management practices that could aid dairy farmers in improving the outcome of selective DCT and decrease early lactation SCC.

Abstract
Regional benchmarking data enables farmers to compare their animal health situation to that of other herds and identify areas with improvement potential. For the udder health status of German dairy cow farms, such data were incomplete. Therefore, the aim of this study was (1) to describe the incidence of clinical mastitis (CM), (2) to describe cell count based udder health indicators [annual mean test day average of the proportion of animals without indication of mastitis (aWIM), new infection risk during lactation (aNIR), and proportion of cows with low chance of cure (aLCC); heifer mastitis rate (HM)] and their seasonal variation, and (3) to evaluate the level of implementation of selected measures of mastitis monitoring. Herds in three German regions (North: n = 253; East: n = 252, South: n = 260) with different production conditions were visited. Data on CM incidence and measures of mastitis monitoring were collected via structured questionnaire-based interviews. Additionally, dairy herd improvement (DHI) test day data from the 365 days preceding the interview were obtained. The median (Q0.1, Q0.9) farmer reported incidence of mild CM was 14.8% (3.5, 30.8%) in North, 16.2% (1.9, 50.4%) in East, and 11.8% (0.0, 30.7%) in South. For severe CM the reported incidence was 4.0% (0.0, 12.2%), 2.0% (0.0, 10.8%), and 2.6% (0.0, 11.0%) for North, East, and South, respectively. The median aWIM was 60.7% (53.4, 68.1%), 59.0% (49.7, 65.4%), and 60.2% (51.5, 67.8%), whereas the median aNIR was 17.1% (13.6, 21.6%), 19.9% (16.2, 24.9%), and 18.3% (14.4, 22.0%) in North, East, and South, respectively with large seasonal variations. Median aLCC was ≤1.1% (≤ 0.7%, ≤ 1.8%) in all regions and HM was 28.4% (19.7, 37.2%), 35.7% (26.7, 44.2%), and 23.5% (13.1, 35.9%), in North, East and South, respectively. Participation in a DHI testing program (N: 95.7%, E: 98.8%, S: 89.2%) and premilking (N: 91.1%, E: 93.7%, S: 90.2%) were widely used. Several aspects of udder health monitoring, including exact documentation of CM cases, regular microbiological analysis of milk samples and the use of a veterinary herd health consultancy service were not applied on many farms. The results of this study can be used by dairy farmers and their advisors as benchmarks for the assessment of the udder health situation in their herds.

Abstract
The Irish Johne's Control Programme (IJCP) provides a long-term approach to the voluntary control of Johne's disease (JD) in Ireland, strongly supported by Irish cattle industry leadership. It leverages the establishment of Animal Health Ireland for control of animal diseases not regulated by the European Union. The IJCP has four objectives: facilitate protection against spread of JD to uninfected farms; reduce the level of infection when present; assure markets of JD control in Ireland; and improve calf health and farm biosecurity. Key IJCP elements are an annual veterinary risk assessment and management plan (VRAMP), annual whole herd test (WHT) by ELISA on blood or milk samples with ancillary faecal PCR testing of ELISA reactors, and Targeted Advisory Service on Animal Health (TASAH) investigations of infected herds. There are pathways for assurance of herds with continuing negative tests and for management of test-positive herds. Herdowners are responsible for on-farm activities, and specifically-trained (approved) veterinary practitioners have a pivotal role as technical advisors and service providers. The programme is supported by training of veterinarians, performance of testing in designated laboratories, documentation of policies and procedures, innovative data management for herd and test activities and for programme administration, training, and broad communication and awareness activities. Tools and systems are refined to address emerging issues and enhance the value of the programme. An Implementation Group comprising industry, government and technical leaders sets strategic direction and policy, advised by a Technical Working Group. Shared funding responsibilities are agreed by key stakeholders until 2022 to support herds in the programme to complete requirements. Herd registrations have increased steadily to exceed 1,800. National bulk tank milk surveillance is also being deployed to identify and recruit test-positive herds with the expectation that they have a relatively high proportion of seropositive animals. The programme will continue to innovate and improve to meet farmer and industry needs.
