Abstract
β-Cyclodextrin was attached to lignin/lignin crosslinked by epichlorohydrin and served as a drug delivery matrix. Ketoconazole and piroxicam were added into the polymeric matrix as antifungal and anti-inflammatory agents, respectively. The percentage of drug retained ranged from 48.4% to 58.4% for ketoconazole and piroxicam, respectively. It was found that their tensile strengths increased with decreasing particle size, ranging between 59% and 71% for lignin crosslinked with β-cyclodextrin base matrix (LCD). Depending on the polymeric matrix, the drug release kinetics fit well in the Korsmeyer-Peppas model, with or without Fickian diffusion. From the materials based on the mixture of epoxidized lignin and β-cyclodextrin, the medicines were released more slowly (the release rate constant presents lower values ranging between 1.117 and 1.783), as compared with those comprising LCD (2.210-4.824). The materials were also demonstrated to have antimicrobial activity. The antioxidant activity of LCD loaded with piroxicam was found to be 23.9% greater than that of the base matrix (LCD). These findings could be useful towards β-cyclodextrin attached to lignin formulation development of drug carriers with antioxidant activity.

Abstract
Zygosaccharomyces rouxii is an osmotolerant and halotolerant yeast that can participate in fermentation. To understand the mechanisms of salt and sugar tolerance, the transcription levels of Z. rouxii M 2013310 under 180 g/L NaCl stress and 600 g/L glucose stress were measured. The transcriptome analysis showed that 2227 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified under 180 g/L NaCl stress, 1530 DEGs were identified under 600 g/L glucose stress, and 1278 DEGs were identified under both stress conditions. Then, KEGG enrichment analyses of these genes indicated that 53.3% of the upregulated genes were involved in the ergosterol synthesis pathway. Subsequently, quantitative PCR was used to verify the results, which showed that the genes of the ergosterol synthesis pathway were significantly upregulated under 180 g/L NaCl stress. Finally, further quantitative testing of ergosterol and spotting assays revealed that Z. rouxii M 2013310 increased the amount of ergosterol in response to high salt stress. These results highlighted the functional differences in ergosterol under sugar stress and salt stress, which contributes to our understanding of the tolerance mechanisms of salt and sugar in Z. rouxii.

Abstract
The purpose of this work was to investigate the protective effect of five essential oils (EOs); Rosmarinus officinalis, Thymus vulgaris, Origanum compactum Benth., Eucalyptus globulus Labill. and Ocimum basilicum L.; against oxidative stress induced by hydrogen peroxide in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The chemical composition of the EOs was analyzed by gas chromatography (GC) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC/MS). The in vitro antioxidant activity was evaluated and the protective effect of EOs was investigated. Yeast cells were pretreated with different concentrations of EOs (6.25–25 µg/ml) for an hour then incubated with H2O2 (2 mM) for an additional hour. Cell viability, antioxidants (Catalase, Superoxide dismutase and Glutathione reductase) and metabolic (Succinate dehydrogenase) enzymes, as well as the level of lipid peroxidation (LPO) and protein carbonyl content (PCO) were evaluated. The chemical composition of EOs has shown the difference qualitatively and quantitatively. Indeed, O. compactum mainly contained Carvacrol, O. basilicum was mainly composed of Linalool, T. vulgaris was rich in thymol, R. officinalis had high α-Pinene amount and for E. globulus, eucalyptol was the major compound. The EOs of basil, oregano and thyme were found to possess the highest amount of total phenolic compounds. Moreover, they have shown the best protective effect on yeast cells against oxidative stress induced by H2O2. In addition, in a dose dependent manner of EOs in yeast medium, treated cells had lower levels of LPO, lower antioxidant and metabolic enzymes activity than cells exposed to H2O2 only. The cell viability was also improved. It seems that the studied EOs are efficient natural antioxidants, which can be exploited to protect against damages and serious diseases related to oxidative stress.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of ozonation process on the level of oxidative stress markers in raspberries stored at room temperature. Raspberry fruit was ozonated with an ozone concentration of 8-10 ppm for 30 min, every 12 h, for 72 h of storage at room temperature. Research showed that ozonated raspberries were characterized by higher activity of superoxide dismutase, ascorbate peroxidase and phenylalanine ammonia-lyase. In turn, the ability to generate superoxide anion radical and hydrogen peroxide by ozone-treated fruit was significantly lower than in the control sample due to higher activities of ROS detoxification systems.

Abstract
Allicin can be used as fumigant to protect food and cultural relics from fungal contamination because of its strong antifungal activity and the characteristics of high volatility and no residues. However, the obvious disadvantages such as high minimal inhibitory concentration and instability prevent it from wide application. In this study, a stable derivative of allicin, S-ethyl ethanethiosulfinate (ALE), was synthesized. We further explored its antifungal activity and apoptosis-inducing effect, as well as the underlying mechanism. ALE had an excellent capability of inhibiting spore germination and mycelial growth of Penicillium chrysogenum observed by inverted microscope and scanning electron microscopy. XTT colorimetric assay indicated ALE could reduce the cell viability obviously and IC50 was 0.92 μg/ml, only 1/42 of allicin (38.68 μg/ml). DHR 123 ROS Assay Kit, flow cytometry assay and confocal immunofluorescence revealed intercellular ROS generation and metacaspase-dependent apoptosis triggered by ALE, while antioxidant tocopherol could reverse ALE-induced cytotoxicity effect and metacaspase activation. These results indicate that ALE induces metacaspase-dependent apoptosis through ROS generation, thus possesses an effective antifungal activity. This new derivative of allicin might be developed as a high efficient alternative to the conventional fungicides for food storage and cultural relic protection.

Abstract
Pyriproxyfen (PPF) is a larvicide, used to combat the proliferation of Aedes aegypti larvae. The objective of this study was to analyze the compounds of pyriproxyfen and pyridalyl (PYL) in a commercial larvicide to analyze the cytotoxic and oxidative effects of PPF and PYL. The toxic potential of PPF and PYL were assessed based on lethal concentration (LC50) in Artemia salina, cytotoxicity based on the mitotic index and the chromosomal alterations in Allium cepa and the oxidative damage in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The PPF and PYL compounds were identified by HPLC-PDA based on their retention times and spectral data. The wavelengths λmax (258 nm) and (271 nm) of the UV spectrum of PYL and PPF and the retention times (RT) (3.38 min) and (4.03 min), respectively. The toxicological potentials of PPF and PYL were significant at concentrations (1, 10, 100 and 1000 ppm), with an LC50 of 48 h (0.5 ppm). PPF and PYL pointed out a cytotoxic effect in A. cepa at all concentrations (0.0001, 0.001, 0.01, 0.1, 1.0, 100 and 1000 ppm), genotoxic effect at concentrations only (0.0001; 0.1; 1; 100 and 1000 ppm), and mutagenic for concentrations (0.1, 100 and 1000 ppm). In relation S. cerevisiae, PPF e PYL prompted oxidative damage at concentrations (100 and 1000 ppm) in all strains (SODWT, Sod1, Sod2, Sod1Sod2, Cat1 and Sod1Cat1). Therefore, the PPF and PYL identificated in commercial larvicide by HPLC-PDA produced cytotoxic and oxidative effects that could cause health and ecosystem risks.

Abstract
Onion skin extract is a source of bioactive compounds demonstrating a high antioxidant activity. The purpose of this research was to investigate the effect of onion skin extract at the level of oxidative stress markers in Saccharomyces cerevisiae exposed to cadmium. The generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), antioxidant enzymes activity, total content of glutathione, and the level of lipid peroxidation in yeast cells were determined. Research showed that onion skin extract protected the yeast cells from the occurrence of oxidative stress induced by cadmium. Cells treated with onion skin extract and cadmium were characterized by lower generation of ROS, antioxidant enzymes activity, lipid peroxidation, and higher level of glutathione content than cells treated with cadmium only. However, the protective effect was dependent on the onion skin extract concentration in yeast medium. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS: The presented studies are of comprehensive character regarding antioxidant properties of the onion skin extract, using Saccharomyces cerevisiae as a model organism. The research results give the opportunity to conduct further research on the use of onion skin extract in functional food or dietary supplements production, as a cellular protector against negative consequence of oxidative stress. It should also be mentioned that the major research material was onion skin which is a troublesome waste material for onion producers. Consequently, the study result will, to a certain extent provide an opportunity to increase interest in the problem of rational use of the waste material, according to a sustainable development idea.
