Life cycle environmental benefits of recycling waste liquor and chemicals in production of lignocellulosic bioethanol

In recent decades, numerous bioconversion processes and techniques have been developed to utilize lignocellulosic biomass as feedstock in the production of bio-based fuels and materials. However, waste treatment, an important sub-system, is seldom considered in the life cycle assessment of lignocellulose derived products. This study comprehensively investigated the environmental impacts of bioethanol and electricity cogeneration from sugarcane bagasse, with a focus on recycling techniques adopted in waste treatment. A life cycle assessment indicated that high recycle rate of black liquor, acid and waste washing water can substantially reduce the consumption of fresh water, related chemicals and energy by 70-80%. Environmental impacts relating to global warming, acidification potential and primary energy demand can be decreased by 5-10 times or even entirely eliminated. These study outcomes demonstrate significant environmental benefits of integrating waste recycling techniques into lignocellulose biorefinery process, providing a solid foundation for future industrial development.

An Acid-Free Alternative to Pectin Production from the Cell Walls of Olive Oil Waste and Different Fruits Using Choline Chloride

The pectin from the cell walls of olive waste (alperujo) and apple, orange and strawberry fruits was extracted using choline chloride (ChCl) and the yield and chemical and structural compositions were compared to pectin extracted using citric acid (CA) and ammonium oxalate/oxalic acid (AOOA). According to the results, the alperujo pectin extracted using ChCl from alcohol-insoluble residue (AIR) showed a higher yield (2.20-2.88% on the basis of dry weight of AIR) than using CA (0.65-1.22%) but lower than using AOOA (3.92-5.42%). For fruit pectin, the highest yield was obtained using CA (8.81-16%), followed by AOOA (5.4-6.63%), although for apple pectin, ChCl gave a similar yield (5.36%) to AOOA. The uronic acid contents in all ChCl pectins (45.9-70.6% dry basis AIR) were higher or similar to that of the other extracting agents (30.6-65.2%), although a lower level of neutral sugar side chains was detected, with a lower degree of branching and degree of methylation. The NMR and FT-IR spectroscopy of the pectin isolated using ChCl confirmed its slightly different structural composition with respect to CA and AOOA pectin. Therefore, depending on the source material and functionality, pectin isolated using ChCl could be an acid-free alternative to pectin production.

Steam explosion as sustainable biomass pretreatment technique for biofuel production: Characteristics and challenges

The biorefining process of lignocellulosic biomass has recently emerged as one of the most profitable biofuel production options. However, pretreatment is required to improve the recalcitrant lignocellulose's enzymatic conversion efficiency. Among biomass pretreatment methods, the steam explosion is an eco-friendly, inexpensive, and effective approach to pretreating biomass, significantly promoting biofuel production efficiency and yield. This review paper critically presents the steam explosion's reaction mechanism and technological characteristics for lignocellulosic biomass pretreatment. Indeed, the principles of steam explosion technology for lignocellulosic biomass pretreatment were scrutinized. Moreover, the impacts of process factors on pretreatment efficiency and sugar recovery for the following biofuel production were also discussed in detail. Finally, the limitations and prospects of steam explosion pretreatment were mentioned. Generally, steam explosion technology applications could bring great potential in pretreating biomass, although deeper studies are needed to deploy this method on industrial scales.

Strategies of pretreatment of feedstocks for optimized bioethanol production: distinct and integrated approaches

Bioethanol is recognized as a valuable substitute for renewable energy sources to meet the fuel and energy demand of the nation, considered an environmentally friendly resource obtained from agricultural residues such as sugarcane bagasse, rice straw, husk, wheat straw and corn stover. The energy demand is sustained using lignocellulosic biomass to produce bioethanol. Lignocellulosic biomass (LCBs) is the point of attention in replacing the dependence on fossil fuels. The recalcitrant structure of the lignocellulosic biomass is disrupted using effective pretreatment techniques that separate complex interlinked structures among cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin. Pretreatment of biomass involves various physical, chemical, biological, and physiochemical protocols which are of importance, dependent upon their individual or combined dissolution effect. Physical pretreatment involves a reduction in the size of the biomass using mechanical, extrusion, irradiation, and sonification methods while chemical pretreatment involves the breaking of various bonds present in the LCB structure. This can be obtained by using an acidic, alkaline, ionic liquid, and organosolvent methods. Biological pretreatment is considered an environment-friendly and safe process involving various bacterial and fungal microorganisms. Distinct pretreatment methods, when combined and utilized in synchronization lead to more effective disruption of LCB, making biomass more accessible for further processing. These could be utilized in terms of their effectiveness for a particular type of cellulosic fiber and are namely steam explosion, liquid hot water, ammonia fibre explosion, CO₂ explosion, and wet air oxidation methods. The present review encircles various distinct and integrated pretreatment processes developed till now and their advancement according to the current trend and future aspects to make lignocellulosic biomass available for further hydrolysis and fermentation.

Steam explosion pretreatment enhancing enzymatic digestibility of overground tubers of tiger nut (Cyperus esculentus L.)

Introduction

Tiger nut (TN) is recognized as a high potential plant which can grow in well-drained sandy or loamy soils and provide food nutrients. However, the overground tubers of TN remain unutilized currently, which limits the value-added utilization and large-area cultivation of this plant.

Methods

In the present study, the overground tubers of TN were subjected to enzymatic hydrolysis to produce fermentable sugars for biofuels production. Steam explosion (SE) was applied to modify the physical-chemical properties of the overground tubers of TN for enhancing its saccharification.

Results and discussion

Results showed that SE broke the linkages of hemicellulose and lignin in the TN substrates and increased cellulose content through removal of hemicellulose. Meanwhile, SE cleaved inner linkages within cellulose molecules, reducing the degree of polymerization by 32.13-77.84%. Cellulose accessibility was significantly improved after SE, which was revealed visibly by the confocal laser scanning microscopy imaging techniques. As a result, enzymatic digestibility of the overground tubers of TN was dramatically enhanced. The cellulose conversion of the SE treated TN substrates reached 38.18-63.97%, which was 2.5-4.2 times higher than that without a SE treatment.

Conclusion

Therefore, SE pretreatment promoted saccharification of the overground tubers of TN, which paves the way for value-added valorization of the TN plants.

Coproduction and enhancement of electricity and biobutanol using adsorption carrier solid-state fermentation

Background

Electric energy is not collected and utilized in biobutanol fermentation. The reason is that the yields of electron shuttles and nanowires are not enough to gather and transfer all electrons to the electrode in liquid fermentation. However, the solid matrix of the adsorption carrier may be conducive to the collection and transfer of electrons because of its good adsorption and conductivity. Therefore, this first-attempt study coupled microbial fuel cell (MFC) with adsorption carrier solid-state fermentation (ACSF). In addition, the effect and mechanism of adsorption carrier solid-state fermentation on power generation were explored.

Results

The power generation performance and fermentation performance were improved by ACSF. The power density by polyurethane and carbon felt carrier solid-state fermentation (PC) was 12 times that by no carrier fermentation (NC). The biobutanol yield of absorbent cotton and carbon felt carrier solid-state fermentation (ACC) was increased by 36.86%. Moreover, the mechanism was explored via metabolic flux analysis, cyclic voltammetry and scanning electron microscopy. The results of metabolic flux analysis showed that more electrons were produced and more carbon flowed to biobutanol production. The cyclic voltammetry results revealed that more riboflavin was produced to enhance extracellular electron transport (EET) by ACSF. The scanning electron microscopy image showed that the adsorption capacity and aggregation degree of bacteria were increased on the electrode and nanowires were observed by ACSF.

Conclusions

A new fermentation mode was established by coupling MFC with ACSF to improve substrate utilization, which will provide crucial insights into the fermentation industry. In addition, the ACSF is an effective method to enhance power generation performance and fermentation performance.

A one-step deconstruction-separation organosolv fractionation of lignocellulosic biomass using acetone/phenoxyethanol/water ternary solvent system

A novel ternary solvent system for organosolv fractionation of lignocellulosic biomass, named APW process, which is composed of acetone, phenoxyethanol and water with the advantages of monophasic deconstruction and biphasic separation of components was developed. Through fractionation of amorpha as a case study, a monophasic APW solution (acetone/phenoxyethanol/water = 5:11:4, volume ratio) with the best lignin affinity was constructed based on Hansen solubility parameters. According to Taguchi experimental design, the optimal conditions were 130 °C, 70 min, 0.15 M sulfuric acid and 20 LSR. Under optimal conditions, removal of lignin and hemicellulose reached 95.60% and 98.39%, respectively. While 80.48% of cellulose was retained in residue and its digestibility was 80.36%. Then, 83.74% of hemicellulose was recovered from aqueous as sugars, and 35.64% of lignin was recovered by precipitation. Moreover, APW process also have effective fractionation of sugarcane bagasse, corn cob and pine, cellulose and hemicellulose recovery were both over 80%.

Advances in Pretreatment of Straw Biomass for Sugar Production

Straw biomass is an inexpensive, sustainable, and abundant renewable feedstock for the production of valuable chemicals and biofuels, which can surmount the main drawbacks such as greenhouse gas emission and environmental pollution, aroused from the consumption of fossil fuels. It is rich in organic content but is not sufficient for extensive applications because of its natural recalcitrance. Therefore, suitable pretreatment is a prerequisite for the efficient production of fermentable sugars by enzymatic hydrolysis. Here, we provide an overview of various pretreatment methods to effectively separate the major components such as hemicellulose, cellulose, and lignin and enhance the accessibility and susceptibility of every single component. This review outlines the diverse approaches (e.g., chemical, physical, biological, and combined treatments) for the excellent conversion of straw biomass to fermentable sugars, summarizes the benefits and drawbacks of each pretreatment method, and proposes some investigation prospects for the future pretreatments.
