Dynamics of quantum wave packets in complex molecules traced by 2D coherent electronic correlation spectroscopy

Characterization of the ultrafast spectral diffusion and vibronic coherence of TIPS-pentacene using 2D electronic spectroscopy

TIPS-pentacene is a small-molecule organic semiconductor that is widely used in optoelectronic devices. It has been studied intensely owing to its ability to undergo singlet fission. In this study, we aim to develop further understanding of the coupling between the electronic and nuclear degrees of freedom of TIPS-pentacene (TIPS-Pn). We measured and analyzed the 2D electronic spectra of TIPS-Pn in solutions. Using center line slope (CLS) analysis, we characterized the frequency-fluctuation correlation function of the 0-0 vibronic transition. Strong oscillations in the CLS values were observed for up to 5 ps with a frequency of 264 cm^-1, which are attributable to a large vibronic coupling with the TIPS-Pn ring-breathing vibrational mode. In addition, detailed analysis of the CLS values allowed us to retrieve two spectral diffusion lifetimes, which are attributed to the inertial and diffusive dynamics of solvent molecules. Amplitude beating analysis also uncovered couplings with another vibrational mode at 1173 cm^-1. The experimental results can be described using the displaced harmonic oscillator model. By comparing the CLS values of the simulated data with the experimental CLS values, we estimated a Huang-Rhys factor of 0.1 for the ring-breathing vibrational mode. The results demonstrated how CLS analysis can be a useful method for characterizing the strength of vibronic coupling.

Transient Two-Dimensional Electronic Spectroscopy: Coherent Dynamics at Arbitrary Times along the Reaction Coordinate

Recent advances in two-dimensional electronic spectroscopy (2DES) have enabled identification of fragile quantum coherences in condensed-phase systems near the equilibrium molecular geometry. In general, traditional 2DES cannot measure such coherences associated with photophysical processes that occur at times significantly after the initially prepared state has dephased, such as the evolution of the initial excited state into a charge transfer state. We demonstrate the use of transient two-dimensional electronic spectroscopy (t-2DES) to probe coherences in an electron donor-acceptor dyad consisting of a perylenediimide (PDI) acceptor and a perylene (Per) donor. An actinic pump pulse prepares the lowest excited singlet state of PDI followed by formation of the PDI^•--Per^•+ ion pair, which is probed at different times following the actinic pulse using 2DES. Analysis of the observed coherences provides information about electronic, vibronic, and vibrational interactions at any time along the reaction coordinate for ion pair formation.

Transfer of vibrational coherence through incoherent energy transfer process in Förster limit

We study transfer of coherent nuclear oscillations between an excitation energy donor and an acceptor in a simple dimeric electronic system coupled to an unstructured thermodynamic bath and some pronounced vibrational intramolecular mode. Our focus is on the nonlinear optical response of such a system, i.e., we study both excited state energy transfer and the compensation of the so-called ground-state bleach signal. The response function formalism enables us to investigate a heterodimer with monomers coupled strongly to the bath and by a weak resonance coupling to each other (Förster rate limit). Our work is motivated by recent observation of various vibrational signatures in two-dimensional coherent spectra of energy-transferring systems including large structures with a fast energy diffusion. We find that the vibrational coherence can be transferred from donor to acceptor molecules provided the transfer rate is sufficiently fast. The ground-state bleach signal of the acceptor molecules does not show any oscillatory signatures, and oscillations in ground-state bleaching signal of the donor prevail with the amplitude, which is not decreasing with the relaxation rate.

System-Dependent Signatures of Electronic and Vibrational Coherences in Electronic Two-Dimensional Spectra

In this work, we examine vibrational coherence in a molecular monomer, where time evolution of a nuclear wavepacket gives rise to oscillating diagonal- and off-diagonal peaks in two-dimensional electronic spectra. We find that the peaks oscillate out-of-phase, resulting in a cancellation in the corresponding pump-probe spectra. Our results confirm the unique disposition of two-dimensional electronic spectroscopy (2D-ES) for the study of coherences. The oscillation pattern is in excellent agreement with the diagrammatic analysis of the third-order nonlinear response. We show how 2D-ES can be used to distinguish between ground- and excited-state wavepackets. On the basis of our results, we discuss coherences in coupled molecular aggregates involving both electronic and nuclear degrees of freedom. We conclude that a general distinguishing criterion based on the experimental data alone cannot be devised.
