An Improved Nonparallel Support Vector Machine

In this article, an improved nonparallel support vector machine (INPSVM) is proposed for pattern classification. INPSVM inherits almost all advantages of nonparallel support vector machine (NPSVM), i.e., the kernel trick can be directly applied for the nonlinear case and the matrix inversion is avoided. These are completely different from the twin support vector machine (TSVM). Moreover, the INPSVM classifier has some incomparable advantages over TSVM and NPSVM. First, it can effectively eliminate the negative effect of noise, especially feature noise around the decision boundary. Second, the novel classifier has higher classification accuracy for both linear and nonlinear data sets compared with the other algorithms. Finally, a large number of experiments show that INPSVM is superior to other algorithms in efficiency, accuracy, and robustness.

Medical data set classification using a new feature selection algorithm combined with twin-bounded support vector machine

Early diagnosis and treatment are the most important strategies to prevent deaths from several diseases. In this regard, data mining and machine learning techniques have been useful tools to help minimize errors and to provide useful information for diagnosis. Our paper aims to present a new feature selection algorithm. In order to validate our study, we used eight benchmark data sets which are commonly used among researchers who developed machine learning methods for medical data classification. The experiment has shown that the performance of our proposed new feature selection method combined with twin-bounded support vector machine (FSTBSVM) is very efficient. The robustness of the FSTBSVM is examined using classification accuracy, analysis of sensitivity, and specificity. The proposed FSTBSVM is a very promising technique for classification, and the results show that the proposed method is capable of producing good results with fewer features than the original data sets. Mining EEG with SVM for Understanding Cognitive Underpinnings of Math Problem Solving Strategies

We have developed a new methodology for examining and extracting patterns from brain electric activity by using data mining and machine learning techniques. Data was collected from experiments focused on the study of cognitive processes that might evoke different specific strategies in the resolution of math problems. A binary classification problem was constructed using correlations and phase synchronization between different electroencephalographic channels as characteristics and, as labels or classes, the math performances of individuals participating in specially designed experiments. The proposed methodology is based on using well-established procedures of feature selection, which were used to determine a suitable brain functional network size related to math problem solving strategies and also to discover the most relevant links in this network without including noisy connections or excluding significant connections.
