A Virtual Reality Environment for Rehabilitation of Prospective Memory in Stroke Patients

What is the future for immersive virtual reality in memory rehabilitation? A systematic review

BACKGROUND

A growing interest in non-pharmacological approaches aimed at cognitive rehabilitation and cognitive enhancement pointed towards the application of new technologies. The complex virtual reality (VR) presented using immersive devices has been considered a promising approach.

OBJECTIVE

The article provides a systematic review of studies aimed at the efficacy of VR-based rehabilitation. First, we shortly summarize literature relevant to the role of immersion in memory assessment and rehabilitation.

METHODS

We searched Web of Science, ScienceDirect, and PubMed with the search terms "memory rehabilitation", "virtual reality", "memory deficit". Only original studies investigating the efficacy of complex three-dimensional VR in rehabilitation and reporting specific memory output measures were included.

RESULTS

We identified 412 citations, of which 21 met our inclusion criteria. We calculated appropriate effect sizes for 10 studies including control groups and providing descriptive data. The effect sizes range from large to small, or no effect of memory rehabilitation was present, depending on the control condition applied. Summarized studies with missing control groups point out to potential positive effects of VR but do not allow any generalization.

CONCLUSIONS

Even though there are some theoretical advantages of immersive VE over non-immersive technology, there is not enough evidence yet to draw any conclusions.

IoT Based Virtual Reality Game for Physio-therapeutic Patients

Biofeedback therapy trains the patient to control voluntarily the involuntary process of their body. This non-invasive and non-drug treatment is also used as a means to rehabilitate the physical impairments that may follow a stroke, a traumatic brain injury or even in neurological aspects within occupational therapy. The idea behind this study is based on using immersive gaming as a tool for physical rehabilitation that combines the idea of biofeedback and physical computing to get a patient emotionally involved in a game that requires them to do the exercises in order to interact with the game. This game is aimed towards addressing the basic treatment for ‘Frozen Shoulder’. In this work, the physical motions are captured by the wearable ultrasonic sensor attached temporarily to the various limbs of the patient. The data received from the sensors are then sent to the game via serial wireless communication. There are two main aspects to this study: motion capturing and game design. The current status of the application is a single ultrasonic detector. The experimental result shows that physio-therapeutic patients are benefited through the IoT based virtual reality game.

Virtual Reality Meets Non-invasive Brain Stimulation: Integrating Two Methods for Cognitive Rehabilitation of Mild Cognitive Impairment

Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) refers to a subtle, general cognitive decline with a detrimental impact on elderlies' independent living and quality of life. Without a timely diagnosis, this condition can evolve into dementia over time, hence the crucial need for early detection, prevention, and rehabilitation. For this purpose, current neuropsychological interventions have been integrated with (i) virtual reality, which immerses the user in a controlled, ecological, and safe environment (so far, both virtual reality-based cognitive and motor rehabilitation have revealed promising positive outcomes); and (ii) non-invasive brain stimulation, i.e., transcranial magnetic or electric brain stimulation, which has emerged as a promising cognitive treatment for MCI and Alzheimer's dementia. To date, these two methods have been employed separately; only a few studies (limited to motor rehabilitation) have suggested their integration. The present paper suggests to extend this integration to cognitive rehabilitation as well as to provide a multimodal stimulation that could enhance cognitive training, resulting in a more efficient rehabilitation.

A Review of the Application of Virtual Reality Technology in the Diagnosis and Treatment of Cognitive Impairment

At present, with the development of an aging society and an increase in the number of elderly people, in order to ensure the ability and enthusiasm of the elderly to live independently, it is necessary to ensure that they can understand the world in a normal way. More and more elderly people have cognitive impairment, and virtual reality (VR) technology is more effective in cognitive diagnosis and treatment than traditional methods. This review article describes some studies on cognitive diagnosis and training for the elderly, and puts forward some suggestions for current studies, in the hopes that VR technology can be better applied to cognitive diagnosis and training.

A review of prospective memory in individuals with acquired brain injury

OBJECTIVE

Prospective memory (PM) deficits have emerged as an important predictor of difficulty in daily life for individuals with acquired brain injury (BI). This review examines the variables that have been found to influence PM performance in this population. In addition, current methods of assessment are reviewed with a focus on clinical measures. Finally, cognitive rehabilitation therapies are reviewed, including compensatory, restorative and metacognitive approaches.

METHOD

Preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analyses guidelines were used to identify studies. Studies were added that were identified from the reference lists of these.

RESULTS

Research has begun to elucidate the contributing variables to PM deficits after BI, such as attention, executive function and retrospective memory components. Imaging studies have identified prefrontal deficits, especially in the region of BA10 as contributing to these deficits. There are now several clinical measures available with good psychometric properties. Rehabilitation techniques have mostly focused on compensatory strategies, but, in addition, some restorative and metacognitive approaches have shown preliminary promise.

CONCLUSIONS

PM deficits are a common and important deficit after BI. Clinical evaluation is recommended and further understanding of rehabilitation techniques is needed.
