Designing and Simulation Assessment of a Chair Attachment Air Blowing Methods to Enhance the Safety of Prolonged Sitting

Musculoskeletal disorders and the stagnation of sitting are among the side effects of excessive sitting in awkward sitting positions. In this study, a developed chair attachment cushion design with an optimal air blowing technique is proposed to eliminate the negative side effects of prolonged sitting. Instantaneously reducing the contact area between the chair and its occupant is the fundamental goal of the proposed design. The fuzzy multi-criteria decision-making approaches represented by FAHP and FTOPSIS were integrated to evaluate and select the optimal proposed design. An ergonomic and biomechanics assessment of the occupant's seating position while employing the novel safety cushion design was validated using simulation software (CATIA). Sensitivity analysis was also used to confirm the design's robustness. Results show that the manual blowing system using an accordion blower was the optimal design concept based on the selected evaluation criteria. In fact, the proposed design provides an acceptable RULA index value for the examined sitting postures and performed very safely in the biomechanics single action analysis.

Intensity level and on-court role of wheelchair rugby players during competition

BACKGROUND

This study aims at quantifying the level of physical activity of wheelchair rugby players during matches in order to compare defensives players (DP) and offensives players (OP) profiles. Our hypothesis is that OP would present a higher energy expenditure and intensity level values during matches than DP, due to specific actions according to the on-court role.

METHODS

Fifty-two players, including 24 DP and 28 OP (mean age of 34±9 years), from eight French teams involved in the national elite championship and in the French national cup, participated. The seven wheelchair rugby players' classes were differentiated from 0.5 points (most severe deficiencies) to 3.5 points (less severe deficiencies). DP and OP were regrouped from 0.5 to 1.5 points and from 2 to 3.5 points, respectively. Energy expenditure (in kcal), intensity level (in metabolic equivalent of task) and physical activity time (in minutes) of wheelchair rugby players during competition were evaluated.

RESULTS

Statistical analysis between DP and OP showed a significant difference in vigorous activity time with a higher vigorous activity time for OP than DP; P<0.007), associated with higher mean intensity level for OP vs. DP (4.3±1.0 METs vs. 3.8±0.9 METs respectively; P=0.049). No significant differences between DP and OP were found for active energy expenditure (385±158 kcal vs. 446±199 kcal, for DP and OP respectively) during matches.

CONCLUSIONS

This study highlighted significantly different wheelchair rugby player profiles between competing DP and OP for the time spent in high intensity and intensity level. Offensive players were more explosive during a match than DP; therefore, training should be adapted accordingly to their roles.

Insights on the apparel needs and limitations for athletes with disabilities: The design of wheelchair rugby sports-wear

Wheelchair rugby is a sport that has been gaining popularity with athletes with disabilities. However, as it is relatively new and not played by the masses, market specific sports-wear is not available for this sport, which impacts directly on performance and clothing satisfaction of the athletes. Therefore, the main objective of this research was to identify the problems that wheelchair rugby players face with the sports-wear they use for playing the game. The data was collected using a focus group and a questionnaire with 61 wheelchair rugby players in the United Kingdom. Based on their suggestions, on the team expertise, and on the literature, a set of design recommendations was proposed for the upper body garments (tops), lower body garments (bottoms), and gloves. The results demonstrated that the gloves currently available negatively impact on players' ability to participate with satisfactory levels of protection and comfort. Moreover, tops and bottoms also present issues, mainly in the fit and ability to regulate the core body temperature. Hence, the recommendations proposed can provide designers with key information on the specific sports-wear requirements and allow them to design and develop products that can satisfy real needs of specific end-users. This paper intends to raise awareness of the needs of sports-wear for those playing wheelchair rugby and promote the inclusivity of athletes with disabilities.
