Development of a Biological Phosphate Fertilizer to Improve Wheat (Triticum Aestivum L.) Production in Mali

Deciphering the Potential of Sulphur-Oxidizing Bacteria for Sulphate Production Correlating with pH Change

Sulphur, available in the form of sulphate, is one of the essential nutrients that is required by plants. Bacteria capable of oxidizing reduced forms of sulphur to sulphate play an important role in sulphur nutrition for plants. The present study was conducted to isolate, screen, and characterize sulphur-oxidizing bacteria from different soil samples collected from mustard rhizosphere and fly ash mixed soil. A total of 33 sulphur-oxidizing bacterial isolates (HMSOB1-33) were retrieved from soil and further screened for sulphur-oxidizing ability. Maximum solubilization index (3.76), pH reduction (3.93), and sulphate production (173.61 µg/ml) were observed for the isolate HMSOB2 which on the basis of 16S rDNA sequencing was identified as Pantoea dispersa with sequence similarity 98.22%. Four other selected bacterial isolates were identified as Bacillus megaterium, Bacillus tropicus, Bacillus velezensis, and Bacillus cereus. Sulphate solubilization index (SSI) correlated positively (r = 0.91) with sulphate production; however, pH showed negative correlation (r =  - 0.82) with SSI as well as sulphate production after 120 h of incubation. These promising bacterial isolates could be further explored as bioinoculant after assessing plant growth traits.

Phosphorus availability and exchangeable aluminum response to phosphate rock and organic inputs in the Central Highlands of Kenya

Soil acidity and phosphorus deficiency are some of the constraints hampering agricultural production in tropical regions. The prevalence of soil acidity is associated with phosphorus (P) insufficiency and aluminum saturation. We conducted a two-seasons experiment to evaluate soil phosphorus availability and exchangeable aluminum in response to phosphate rock and organic inputs in acidic humic nitisols. The field experiment was installed in Tharaka Nithi County in the Central Highlands of Kenya. The experimental design was a randomized complete block design with treatments replicated thrice. The treatments were: Green manure (Tithonia diversifolia Hemsl.) (60 kg P ha⁻¹), phosphate rock (60 kg P ha⁻¹), goat manure (60 kg P ha⁻¹), Tithonia diversifolia (20 kg P ha⁻¹) combined with phosphate rock (40 kg P ha⁻¹), manure (20 kg P ha⁻¹) combined with phosphate rock (40 kg P ha⁻¹), Triple Super Phosphate combined with Calcium Ammonium Nitrate (TSP + CAN) (60 kg P ha⁻¹) and a control (no input). During the long rains of the 2018 season (LR2018), Tithonia diversifolia + phosphate rock had a significantly higher reduction (67%) of exchangeable aluminum than the sole use of Tithonia diversifolia. Grain yield under TSP + CAN was the highest, followed by the sole organics during the LR2018. Tithonia diversifolia + phosphate rock resulted in a 99% and a 90% increase in NaHCO₃-Pi compared to sole phosphate rock and sole Tithonia diversifolia, respectively. Tithonia diversifolia led to 14% and 62% higher resin-Pi and NaOH-Pi, respectively, compared to manure in the short rains of 2017 (SR2017). The increase in NaOH-Po after the two seasons was statistically significant in sole TSP + CAN. Based on the observed reduced exchangeable aluminum and additional nutrients like Ca, Mg, and K in the soil, sole organic inputs or in combination with phosphate rock treatments are feasible alternatives for sustaining soil phosphorus. Our findings underscore an integrated approach utilizing organic amendments combined with phosphate rock in acidic humic nitisols' phosphorus nutrient management.

Heavy metal induced stress on wheat: phytotoxicity and microbiological management

Among many soil problems, heavy metal accumulation is one of the major agronomic challenges that has seriously threatened food safety. Due to these problems, soil biologists/agronomists in recent times have also raised concerns over heavy metal pollution, which indeed are unpleasantly affecting agro-ecosystems and crop production. The toxic heavy metals once deposited beyond certain permissible limits, obnoxiously affect the density, composition and physiological activities of microbiota, dynamics and fertility of soil leading eventually to reduction in wheat production and via food chain, human and animal health. Therefore, the metal induced phytotoxicity problems warrant urgent and immediate attention so that the physiological activities of microbes, nutrient pool of soils and concurrently the production of wheat are preserved and maintained in a constantly deteriorating environment. To mitigate the magnitude of metal induced changes, certain microorganisms have been identified, especially those belonging to the plant growth promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) group endowed with the distinctive property of heavy metal tolerance and exhibiting unique plant growth promoting potentials. When applied, such metal-tolerant PGPR have shown variable positive impact on wheat production, even in soils contaminated with metals, by supplying macro and micro nutrients and secreting active biomolecules like EPS, melanins and metallothionein (MTs). Despite some reports here and there, the phytotoxicity of metals to wheat and how wheat production in metal-stressed soil can be enhanced is poorly explained. Thus, an attempt is made in this review to better understand the mechanistic basis of metal toxicity to wheat, and how such phytotoxicity can be mitigated by incorporating microbiological remediation strategies in wheat cultivation practices. The information provided here is likely to benefit wheat growers and consequently optimize wheat production inexpensively under stressed soils.
