Effects of Phosphorus Accumulation in Soil with the Utilization Ages of the Vegetable Greenhouses in the Suburb of Shenyang

Effect of struvite (Crystal Green) fertilization on soil element content determined by different methods under soybean cultivation

Struvite is regarded as a promising phosphorus fertilizer alternative to mineral fertilizers; however before fertilizing, soil tests should be undertaken to determine fertilizer recommendations. In May 2022, soil was sampled from a pot experiment with the application of phosphorus set up at the Wroclaw University and Environmental and Life Sciences. Chemical analysis of the soil included total and available phosphorus, potassium, magnesium determined by the Egner-Riehm, Mehlich 3 and Yanai methods. The purpose of the article is to compare soil element extraction by three different methods under struvite fertilization and its use in soybean cultivation. The application of these methods indicated an unambiguous increase in soil Mg content after struvite application. Broadcast soybean fertilization affected the phosphorus content of the soil. The results of the study indicated that different extraction methods presented different contents of P from soil. The content of available phosphorus was circa 122-156 mg kg-1 dm, 35.4-67.5 mg kg-1 dm and 100-159 mg kg-1 dm according to the Mehlich, Yanai and Egner-Riehm methods, respectively. A positive correlation was found between the content of Mg and K in soil determined by the Mehlich 3 and Yanai methods, which may suggest that the Yanai method could be introduced into standard soil chemical analysis in Poland. Such a correlation was not found for phosphorus, which is a difficult element to determine due to the multitude of factors affecting its availability.

Green manure incorporation accelerates enzyme activity, plant growth, and changes in the fungal community of soil

Green manure can sustain agricultural production, preserve biodiversity, and mitigate soil degradation caused by long-term application of chemical fertilizers. Moreover, the application of green manure can improve soil health through increased soil biological activities. Nevertheless, little attention has been paid to the effects of leguminous and non-leguminous plants on phosphorus- and carbon-related enzyme activities and fungal community composition in soil. In this study, a pot experiment was carried out to elucidate the effects of two green manures on plant growth promoting potential, phosphorus- and carbon-related enzyme activities, and soil fungal community composition. Two green manure treatments (Brassica juncea and hairy vetch), poultry compost and control (no amendment) were applied and soil samples were collected after incorporation of green manure and after plant harvest. The results revealed that plant growth with hairy vetch was significantly higher than that with B. juncea and poultry compost, and soil enzyme activities were markedly higher with hairy vetch than with B. juncea. Both green manure amendments altered the soil fungal community composition. It is possible that the incorporation of green manure into soil and their mineralization and decomposition were controlled by the carbon: nitrogen ratio of the manures and that these manures were easily degradable by soil fungi. In particular, the incorporation of leguminous (hairy vetch) green manure with a low carbon: nitrogen ratio resulted in better plant growth through fast mineralization. Our findings suggest that green manure incorporation is an effective practice and provides substantial benefits to the soil-plant system.

A functional-structural model of upland rice root systems reveals the importance of laterals and growing root tips for phosphate uptake from wet and dry soils

BACKGROUND AND AIMS

Upland rice is often grown where water and phosphorus (P) are limited. To better understand the interaction between water and P availability, functional-structural models that mechanistically represent small-scale nutrient gradients and water dynamics in the rhizosphere are needed.

METHODS

Rice was grown in large columns using a P-deficient soil at three P supplies in the topsoil (deficient, sub-optimal and non-limiting) in combination with two water regimes (field capacity vs. drying periods). Root system characteristics, such as nodal root number, lateral types, interbranch distance, root diameters and the distribution of biomass with depth, as well as water and P uptake, were measured. Based on the observed root data, 3-D root systems were reconstructed by calibrating the structural architecure model CRootBox for each scenario. Water flow and P transport in the soil to each of the individual root segments of the generated 3-D root architectures were simulated using a multiscale flow and transport model. Total water and P uptake were then computed by adding up the uptake by all the root segments.

KEY RESULTS

Measurements showed that root architecture was significantly affected by the treatments. The moist, high P scenario had 2.8 times the root mass, double the number of nodal roots and more S-type laterals than the dry, low P scenario. Likewise, measured plant P uptake increased >3-fold by increasing P and water supply. However, drying periods reduced P uptake at high but not at low P supply. Simulation results adequately predicted P uptake in all scenarios when the Michaelis-Menten constant (Km) was corrected for diffusion limitation. They showed that the key drivers for P uptake are the different types of laterals (i.e. S- and L-type) and growing root tips. The L-type laterals become more important for overall water and P uptake than the S-type laterals in the dry scenarios. This is true across all the P treatments, but the effect is more pronounced as the P availability decreases.

CONCLUSIONS

This functional-structural model can predict the function of specific rice roots in terms of P and water uptake under different P and water supplies, when the structure of the root system is known. A future challenge is to predict how the structure root systems responds to nutrient and water availability.

Assessing the risks of trace elements in environmental materials under selected greenhouse vegetable production systems of China

The risk assessment of trace elements of different environmental media in conventional and organic greenhouse vegetable production systems (CGVPS and OGVPS) can reveal the influence of different farming philosophy on the trace element accumulations and their effects on human health. These provide important basic data for the environmental protection and human health. This paper presents trace element accumulation characteristics of different land uses; reveals the difference of soil trace element accumulation both with and without consideration of background levels; compares the trace element uptake by main vegetables; and assesses the trace element risks of soils, vegetables, waters and agricultural inputs, using two selected greenhouse vegetable systems in Nanjing, China as examples. Results showed that greenhouse vegetable fields contained significant accumulations of Zn in CGVPS relative to rice-wheat rotation fields, open vegetable fields, and geochemical background levels, and this was the case for organic matter in OGVPS. The comparative analysis of the soil medium in two systems with consideration of geochemical background levels and evaluation of the geo-accumulation pollution index achieved a more reasonable comparison and accurate assessment relative to the direct comparison analysis and the evaluation of the Nemerow pollution index, respectively. According to the Chinese food safety standards and the value of the target hazard quotient or hazard index, trace element contents of vegetables were safe for local residents in both systems. However, the spatial distribution of the estimated hazard index for producers still presented certain specific hotspots which may cause potential risk for human health in CGVPS. The water was mainly influenced by nitrogen, especially for CGVPS, while the potential risk of Cd and Cu pollution came from sediments in OGVPS. The main inputs for trace elements were fertilizers which were relatively safe based on relevant standards; but excess application caused trace element accumulations in the environmental media.
