Identifying the subtypes of psychological profiles in senior undergraduate nursing students and its relationship with academic performance: A latent class analysis

Rumination, psychological capital and academic procrastination among nursing students: A cross-sectional study

BACKGROUND

Academic procrastination is common among college students, which affects their learning status and even their physical and mental health. Rumination, psychological capital, and academic procrastination are closely related, but for nursing students, there are few studies reporting on their levels and relationships.

OBJECTIVE

The aim of this study was to investigate the levels of rumination, psychological capital, and academic procrastination among nursing students, and examine the mediating role of psychological capital in rumination and academic procrastination.

DESIGN

A cross-sectional study.

SETTING

The study sampled three medical colleges in Sichuan Province, China.

PARTICIPANTS

A convenience sampling method was used to select 556 nursing students from April to June 2023.

METHODS

556 nursing students were asked to complete questionnaires regarding social-demographic information, rumination, psychological capital, and academic procrastination. Descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation analysis and structural equation model were used in this study.

RESULTS

The scores of rumination, psychological capital, and academic procrastination among nursing students were 46.08 ± 13.61, 108.28 ± 19.50 and 55.32 ± 12.30, respectively. Additionally, structural equation modeling showed that psychological capital mediated the relationship between rumination and academic procrastination with the partial mediating effect of 0.425.

CONCLUSION

Our results suggest that nursing students exhibit moderate levels of rumination, psychological capital and academic procrastination. Moreover, rumination can not only directly affect academic procrastination, but also indirectly through psychological capital. Nursing educators should strengthen their attention to the mental health and learning status of nursing students, take measures to help them adapt to campus life, alleviate rumination, enrich psychological capital, and reduce the risk of academic procrastination.

Self-doubt in Nursing Students: An Evolutionary Concept Analysis

Self-doubt may negatively affect the development of prelicensure nursing students as they prepare to become practice-ready members of the workforce. Walker and Avant's method of analysis was used to explore generalized self-doubt as well as within the context of a contemporary nursing education framework: Aller's Development of Decision-Making and Self-Efficacy Model (ADD-SEM). Results indicate that several attributes of generalized self-doubt, as a form of low psychological capital, were consistent with this construct of the ADD-SEM and should be considered as nurse educators strive to ensure new nurses are prepared for the complexity of today's health care systems.

Application of Diversified Health Education Combined with Psychological Nursing in the Treatment of Patients with Infectious Bone Defects by Induction Membrane Surgery

Objective

To explore the application value of diversified health education combined with psychological nursing in the treatment of patients with infectious bone defects by induction membrane surgery.

Methods

A total of 52 patients with infectious bone defects treated by induction membrane surgery from May 2018 to January 2022 were selected as the research subjects and divided into an observation group (with diversified health education combined with psychological care) and a control group according to the random number table method (routine nursing care). There were 26 patients in each group, and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) and Self-Care Ability Scale (ESCA) were compared.

Results

At admission, there was no significant difference in anxiety dimension, depression dimension, and total score of anxiety and depression between the two groups (P > 0.05). At admission, there was no significant difference in self-care responsibility, self-concept, self-care skills, health knowledge level, and total score between the two groups (P > 0.05). Skills, health knowledge level, and total score were higher than those in the control group (P < 0.05). The total incidence of complications in the observation group was lower than that in the control group (P < 0.05).

Conclusion

Diversified health education combined with psychological nursing is beneficial to reduce negative emotions, improve self-care ability, and reduce the incidence of complications in the treatment of patients with infectious bone defects by induction membrane surgery.

Mediating effects of academic self-efficacy and smartphone addiction on the relationship between professional attitude and academic burnout in nursing students: A cross-sectional study

BACKGROUND

Academic burnout is a common issue that interferes with the role shift from nursing students to qualified nurses and aggravates a shortage of workforce in global healthcare system. According to the Areas of Worklife Scale, developed by Maslach and Leiter, there are six dimensions that encompass the major antecedents of burnout. Therefore, it's well worth an exploration to understand academic burnout and its' underlying mechanism based on the theoretical instrument. Specifically, academic burnout, professional attitude, academic self-efficacy and smartphone addiction were selected as observation variables after widely literature review.

OBJECTIVE

The purpose of this study is to examine academic burnout and figure out the relationships between academic burnout, professional attitude, academic self-efficacy and smartphone addiction among nursing students.

DESIGN

A cross-sectional study.

SETTING

The study was conducted in a nursing department in Anhui province in eastern China.

PARTICIPANTS

1445 nursing students.

METHODS

Academic burnout, professional attitude, academic self-efficacy and smartphone addiction of participants were measured using online questionnaires with a supportive platform called "wenjuanxing". Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Pearson's correlations, and path analysis.

RESULTS

Of all the participants, 44.26 % had a certain degree of academic burnout. Professional attitude and academic self-efficacy were negatively related to academic burnout. Smartphone addiction was positively associated with academic burnout. Meanwhile, academic self-efficacy and smartphone addiction partly mediated the effect of professional attitude on academic burnout.

CONCLUSION

The compound strategies targeted at boosting positive professional attitude, fostering academic self-efficacy, and controlling the smartphone addiction are warranted for decreasing academic burnout.
