Abstract
The development of new sustainable polymeric materials endowed with improved performances but minimal environmental impact is a major concern, with polyesters as primary targets. Lactones are key monomers thanks to ring-opening polymerization, but their use in step-growth polymerization has remained scarce and challenging. Herein, we report a powerful bis(γ-lactone) (γSL) that was efficiently prepared on a gram scale from malonic acid by Pd-catalyzed cycloisomerization. The γ-exomethylene moieties and the spiro structure greatly enhance its reactivity toward ring-opening and enable step-growth polymerization under mild conditions. Using diols, dithiols, or diamines as comonomers, a variety of regioregular (AB)n copolymers with diverse linkages and functional groups (from oxo-ester to β-thioether lactone and β-hydroxy-lactame) have been readily prepared. Reaction modeling and monitoring revealed the occurrence of an original trans-lactonization process following the first ring-opening of γSL. This peculiar reactivity opens the way to regioregular (ABAC)n terpolymers, as illustrated by the successive step-growth polymerization of γSL with a diol and a diamine.

Abstract
The scientific community has witnessed extensive developments and applications of organoboron compounds as synthetic elements and metal-free catalysts for the construction of small molecules, macromolecules, and functional materials over the last two decades. This review highlights the achievements of organoboron-mediated polymerizations in the past several decades alongside the mechanisms underlying these transformations from the standpoint of the polymerization mode. Emphasis is placed on free radical polymerization, Lewis pair polymerization, ionic (cationic and anionic) polymerization, and polyhomologation. Herein, alkylborane/O2 initiating systems mediate the radical polymerization under ambient conditions in a controlled/living manner by careful optimization of the alkylborane structure or additives; when combined with Lewis bases, the selected organoboron compounds can mediate the Lewis pair polymerization of polar monomers; the bicomponent organoboron-based Lewis pairs and bifunctional organoboron-onium catalysts catalyze ring opening (co)polymerization of cyclic monomers (with heteroallenes, such as epoxides, CO2, CO, COS, CS2, episulfides, anhydrides, and isocyanates) with well-defined structures and high reactivities; and organoboranes initiate the polyhomologation of sulfur ylides and arsonium ylides providing functional polyethylene with different topologies. The topological structures of the produced polymers via these organoboron-mediated polymerizations are also presented in this review mainly including linear polymers, block copolymers, cyclic polymers, and graft polymers. We hope the summary and understanding of how organoboron compounds mediate polymerizations can inspire chemists to apply these principles in the design of more advanced organoboron compounds, which may be beneficial for the polymer chemistry community and organometallics/organocatalysis community.

Abstract
Organocatalytic ring-opening polymerization (ROP) is a versatile method for synthesizing well-defined polymers with controlled molecular weights, dispersities, and nonlinear macromolecular architectures. Despite spectacular advances in organocatalytic ROP, precision synthesis of polysiloxanes remains challenging due to the mismatch in polarity between highly polar initiators and nonpolar monomers and polymers and the difficulty in suppressing the formation of scrambling products via transetherification reactions during ROP of cyclic siloxanes. Here, we describe a binary organocatalytic ROP (BOROP) of hexamethylcyclotrisiloxane (D3) employing organic bases as catalysts and (thio)ureas as cocatalysts. The BOROP of D3 using triazabicyclodecene (TBD) and (thio)ureas generates polydimethylsiloxanes (PDMSs) with narrow dispersity (Mw/Mn < 1.1). Despite the similar basicities of TBD and 1,8-bis(tetramethylguanidino)naphthalene (TMGN), which is known as a proton sponge, a unitary organocatalytic system using TMGN was inactive for the ROP of D3. When the TMGN was paired with acidic urea, the BOROP of D3 yielded PDMSs with narrow dispersity (Mw/Mn < 1.1). Data suggest that the synergetic effect of TMGN and urea is results in an unprecedented activation-deactivation equilibrium between dormant and propagating species. The benefits of the present BOROP system are demonstrated by the formation of PDMS elastomers with more uniform network structures that are highly stretchy and have excellent mechanical properties.

Abstract
Borane-based Lewis acids (LA) play an indispensable role in the Lewis pair (LP) mediated polymerization. However, most borane-based LPs are moisture- and air-sensitive. Therefore, development of moisture and air-stable borane-based LP is highly desirable. To achieve this goal, the concept of "aggregation induced enlargement effects" by chemically linking multiple borane within a nanoscopic confinement was conceived to create macromolecular LA. Accordingly, an extremely moisture and air stable macromolecular borane, namely, PVP-1B featuring poly(4-vinylphenol) backbone, was constructed. The concentration of borane active site is greatly higher than average concentration due to local confinement. Therefore, an enhanced activity was observed. Moreover, the local LA aggregation effects allow its tolerance to air and large amount of chain transfer agent. Consequently, PVP-1B showed remarkable efficiency for propylene oxide (PO) polymerization at 25 °C (TOF=27900 h-1 ). Furthermore, it enables generation of well-defined telechelic poly (CHO-alt-CO2 ) diol (0.6-15.3 kg/mol) with narrow Đs via copolymerizing cyclohexene oxide and CO2 at 80 °C. This work indicates unifying multiple borane within a polymer in a macromolecular level shows superior catalytic performance than constructing binary, bi(multi)functional systems in a molecular level. This paves a new way to make functional polyethers.

Abstract
ε-Caprolactone (ε-CL) adducts of cationic, amine tris(phenolate)-supported niobium(V) and tantalum(V) ethoxides initiate the ring-opening polymerization of lactones. The Ta(V) species prepared and applied catalytically herein exhibits higher activity in the ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of ε-caprolactone than the previously reported, isostructural Nb(V) complex, contradicting literature comparisons of Nb(V)- and Ta(V)-based protocols. Both systems also initiate the ROP of δ-valerolactone and rac-β-butyrolactone, kinetic studies confirming retention of higher activity by the Ta congener. Polymerizations of rac-β-butyrolactone and δ-valerolactone were previously unrealized under Group V- or Ta-mediated conditions, respectively, although the former has afforded only low molecular weight, cyclic poly-3-hydroxybutyrate. Cationic ethoxo-Nb(V) and -Ta(V) δ-valerolactone adducts are also reported, demonstrating the facility of δ-valerolactone as a ligand and the generality of the synthetic method. Both δ-valerolactone-bearing complexes initiate the ROP of ε-caprolactone, δ-valerolactone, and rac-β-butyrolactone. Accordingly, we have elucidated trends in reactivity and investigated the initiation mechanism for such systems, the insertion event being predicated upon intramolecular nucleophilic attack on the coordinated lactone by the adjacent alkoxide moiety. This mechanism enables quantitative, stoichiometric installation of a single monomer residue distinct from the bulk of the polymer chain, and permits modification of polymer properties via both manipulation of the molecular architecture and tuning of the polymerization kinetics, and thus dispersity, through hitherto inaccessible independent control of the initiation event.

Abstract
We report three niobium-based initiators for the catalytic ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of ε-caprolactone, exhibiting good activity and molecular weight control. In particular, we have prepared on the gram-scale and fully characterized a monometallic cationic alkoxo-Nb(V) ε-caprolactone adduct representing, to the best of our knowledge, an unprecedented example of a metal complex with an intact lactone monomer and a functional ROP-initiating group simultaneously coordinated at the metal center. At 80 °C, all three systems initiate the immortal solution-state ROP of ε-caprolactone via a coordination-insertion mechanism, which has been confirmed through experimental studies, and is supported by computational data. Natural bond orbital calculations further indicate that polymerization may necessitate isomerization about the metal center between the alkoxide chain and the coordinated monomer. The observations made in this work are expected to inform mechanistic understanding both of amine tris(phenolate)-supported metal alkoxide ROP initiators, including various highly stereoselective systems for the polymerization of lactides and of coordination-insertion-type ROP protocols more broadly.

Abstract
Side-chain-functionalized aliphatic polyesters are promising as functional biodegradable polymers. We have investigated ring-opening reactions of γ-carbonyl-substituted ε-caprolactones (gCCLs) to obtain poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) analogues. Organic catalysts and Sn(Oct)2 often used for the ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of ε-caprolactone (CL) have been explored to find the conditions for the formation of polymeric products of gCCLs. We confirmed the consumption of gCCLs in all catalyzed reactions. However, chain propagation hardly occurs, as the propagating species are preferentially transformed to α-substituted five-membered lactones when the substituents are linked by ester or not sterically hindered. Intramolecular cyclization to form thermodynamically stable five-membered lactones releases alcohols and amines, serving as nucleophiles for the subsequent ring opening of other gCCLs. Thus, apparent chain reactions are realized for continuous consumption of gCCLs. The reaction preference remains unchanged independent of the catalysts, although the reactions of the amide-linked gCCLs by acidic catalysts are slightly mitigated. Finally, copolymerization of CL and a gCCL catalyzed by diphenyl phosphate has been investigated, which enables the chain propagation reaction to yield the linear oligomers of PCL analogues containing up to 16 mol% of gCCL units. This study contributes to understanding the chemistry of ring-opening reactions of substituted lactones for designing functional degradable polymers.

Abstract
The bulk ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of ε-caprolactone using phosphazene-containing porous polymeric material (HPCP) has been studied at high reaction temperatures (130-150 °C). HPCP in conjunction with benzyl alcohol as an initiator induced the living ROP of ε-caprolactone, affording polyesters with a controlled molecular weight up to 6000 g mol-1 and moderate polydispersity (Ð~1.5) under optimized conditions ([BnOH]/[CL] = 50; HPCP: 0.63 mM; 150 °C). Poly(ε-caprolactone)s with higher molecular weight (up to Mn = 14,000 g mol-1, Ð~1.9) were obtained at a lower temperature, at 130 °C. Due to its high thermal and chemical stability, HPCP can be reused for at least three consecutive cycles without a significant decrease in the catalyst efficiency. The tentative mechanism of the HPCP-catalyzed ROP of ε-caprolactone, the key stage of which consists of the activation of the initiator through the basic sites of the catalyst, was proposed.

Abstract
The biodegradable, aliphatic polyester poly(lactic acid), PLA, is a leading bio-based alternative to petrochemical-derived plastic materials across a range of applications. Widely reported in the available literature as a benchmark for PLA production via the bulk ring-opening polymerization of lactides is the use of divalent tin catalysts, and particularly tin(II) bis(2-ethylhexanoate). We present an alternative zirconium-based system that combines an inexpensive Group IV metal with the robustness, high activity, control, and designed compatibility with existing facilities and processes, that are required for industrial use. We have carried out a comprehensive kinetic study and applied a combined experimental and theoretical approach to understanding the mechanism by which the polymerization of lactide proceeds in the presence of this system. In the laboratory-scale (20 g) polymerization of recrystallized racemic d,l-lactide (rac-lactide), we have measured catalyst turnover frequencies up to at least 56,000 h-1, and confirmed the reported protocols' resistance toward undesirable epimerization, transesterification, and chain scission processes, deleterious to the properties of the polymer product. Further optimization and scale-up under industrial conditions have confirmed the relevance of the catalytic protocol to the commercial production of melt-polymerized PLA. We were able to undertake the efficient preparation of high-molecular-weight PLA on the 500-2000 g scale, via the selective and well-controlled polymerization of commercial polymer-grade l-lactide under challenging, industrially relevant conditions, and at metal concentrations as low as 8-12 ppm Zr by weight ([Zr] = 1.3 × 10-3 to 1.9 × 10-3 mol %). Under those conditions, a catalyst turnover number of at least 60,000 was attained, and the activity of the catalyst was comparable to that of tin(II) bis(2-ethylhexanoate).

Abstract
Stereochemical control during polymerization is a key strategy of polymer chemistry to achieve semicrystalline engineered plastics. The stereoselective ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of racemic lactide (rac-LA), which can lead to highly isotactic polylactide (PLA), is one of the emblematic examples in this area. Surprisingly, stereoselective ROP of rac-LA employing chiral organocatalysts has been under-leveraged. Here we show that a commercially available chiral thiourea (TU1), or its urea homologue (U1), can be used in conjunction with an appropriately selected N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) to trigger the stereoselective ROP of rac-LA at room temperature in toluene. Both a high organic catalysis activity (>90% monomer conversion in 5-9 h) and a high stereoselectivity (probability of formation of meso dyads, Pm, in the range 0.82-0.93) can be achieved by thus pairing a NHC and a chiral amino(thio)urea. The less sterically hindered and the more basic NHC, that is, a NHC bearing tert-butyl substituents (NHCtBu), provides the highest stereoselectivity when employed in conjunction with the chiral TU1 or U1. This asymmetric organic catalysis strategy, as applied here in polymerization chemistry, further expands the field of possibilities to achieve bioplastics with adapted thermomechanical properties.

Abstract
Organocatalysis has evolved into an effective complement to metal‐ or enzyme‐based catalysis in polymerization, polymer functionalization, and depolymerization. The ease of removal and greater sustainability of organocatalysts relative to transition‐metal‐based ones has spurred development in specialty applications, e.g., medical devices, drug delivery, optoelectronics. Despite this, the use of organocatalysis and other organomediated reactions in polymer chemistry is still rapidly developing, and we envisage their rapidly growing application in nascent areas such as controlled radical polymerization, additive manufacturing, and chemical recycling in the coming years. In this Review, we describe ten trending areas where we anticipate paradigm shifts resulting from novel organocatalysts and other transition‐metal‐free conditions. We highlight opportunities and challenges and detail how new discoveries could lead to previously inaccessible functional materials and a potentially circular plastics economy.

Abstract
Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) are biodegradable and biocompatible polyesters with a wide range of applications; in particular, they currently stand as promising alternatives to conventional polyolefin-based "plastics". The introduction of sulfur atoms within the PHAs backbone can endow the resulting polythioesters (PTEs) with differentiated, sometimes enhanced thermal, optical and mechanical properties, thereby widening their versatility and use. Hence, PTEs have been gaining increasing attention over the past half-decade. This review highlights recent advances towards the synthesis of well-defined PTEs by ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of cyclic thioesters - namely thiolactones - as well as of S-carboxyanhydrides and thionolactones; it also covers the ring-opening copolymerization (ROCOP) of cyclic thioanhydrides or thiolactones with epoxides or episulfides. Most of the ROP reactions described are of anionic type, mediated by inorganic, organic or organometallic initiators/catalysts, along with a few enzymatic reactions as well. Emphasis is placed on the reactivity of the thio monomers, in relation to their ring-size ranging from 4- to 5-, 6- and 7-membered cycles, the nature of the catalyst/initiating systems implemented and their efficiency in terms of activity and control over the PTE molar mass, dispersity, topology, and microstructure.

Abstract
Sequential block copolymerization involving comonomers belonging to different classes, e.g., a vinyl-type monomer and a heterocycle, is a challenging task in macromolecular chemistry, as corresponding propagating species do not interconvert easily from one to the other by crossover reactions. Here, it is first evidenced that 1-methoxy 2-methyl 1-trimethylsilyloxypropene (MTS), i.e., a silyl ketene acetal (SKA)-containing initiator, can be used in presence of the P4 -t-Bu phosphazene organic base to control the ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of racemic lactide (rac-LA). The elementary reaction, which rapidly transforms SKA groups into propagating alkoxides, can be leveraged to directly synthesize well-defined poly(methyl methacrylate)-b-polylactide (PMMA-b-PLA) block copolymers. This is achieved using P4 -t-Bu as the single organic catalyst and MTS as the initiator for the group transfer polymerization (GTP) of methyl methacrylate (MMA), followed by the ROP of rac-LA. Both polymerization methods are implemented under selective and controlled/living conditions at room temperature in THF. This sequential addition strategy further expands the scope of organic catalysis of polymerizations for macromolecular engineering of block copolymers involving propagating species of disparate reactivity. Abstract
The development of sustainable polymers that possess useful material properties competitive with existing petroleum-derived polymers is a crucial goal but remains a formidable challenge for polymer science. Here we demonstrate that irreversible ring-opening polymerization (IROP) of biomass-derived five-membered thionolactones is an effective and robust strategy for the polymerization of non-strained five-membered rings-these polymerizations are commonly thermodynamically forbidden under ambient conditions, at industrially relevant temperatures of 80-100 °C. Computational studies reveal that the selective IROP of these thionolactones is thermodynamically driven by S/O isomerization during the ring-opening process. IROP of γ-thionobutyrolactone, a representative non-strained thionolactone, affords a sustainable polymer from renewable resources that possesses external-stimuli-triggered degradability. This poly(thiolactone) also exhibits high performance, with its key thermal and mechanical properties comparing well to those of commercial petroleum-based low-density polyethylene. This IROP strategy will enable conversion of five-membered lactones, generally unachievable by other polymerization methods, into sustainable polymers with a range of potential applications.

Abstract
We herein report a new type of degradable poly(β-trimethylsilyloxy ester) prepared by the organocatalyzed Mukaiyama aldol polyaddition between bis(silyl ketene acetal)s and dialdehydes. Specifically, the t-Bu-P4 -catalyzed polyaddition between 1,2-bis[2-methyl-1-(trimethylsiloxy)prop-1-enyloxy]ethane (MTS2 ) and 4,4'-biphenyldicarboxaldehyde (BPDA) or butane-1,4-diyl bis(4-formylbenzoate) (BDA) can produce poly(β-trimethylsilyloxy ester)s with number-average molar mass greater than 10 kg mol-1 . For the first time, we find these poly(β-trimethylsilyloxy ester)s are degradable in solution in presence of nucleophiles such as fluoride and cyanide anions. We also find that the degradation behavior of poly(β-trimethylsilyloxy ester)s is highly dependent on the nature of the used catalyst, and the bond scission in polymer is fundamentally rooted in the retro Mukaiyama aldol reaction mechanism. Abstract
The paper presents the synthesis and characterization of poly(trimethylene carbonate) grafted chitosan as a new water soluble biopolymer suitable for in vivo applications. The synthesis was performed via ring-opening polymerization of 1,3-dioxan-2-one (trimethylene carbonate) (TMC) monomer, initiated by the functional groups of chitosan in the presence of toluene as solvent/swelling agent. By varying the molar ratio between the glucosamine units of chitosan and TMC, a series of chitosan derivatives with different content of poly(trimethylene carbonate) chains was synthetized. The structural characterization of the polymers was realized by FTIR and 1H NMR spectroscopy and their solubility was assessed in water and in organic solvents as well. The biocompatibility was investigated by MTS assay on Normal Human Dermal Fibroblasts, and the biodegradability was evaluated in lysozyme buffer solution. Further, the surface properties of the polymer films were analyzed by polarized optical microscopy, atomic force microscopy and water-to-air contact angle measurements. It was established that, by 5% substitution of chitosan with poly(trimethylene carbonate) chains having an average polymerization degree of 7, a water soluble polymer can be attained. Compared to the pristine chitosan, it has improved biocompatibility in solution and moderate wettability and higher biodegradability rate in solid state, pointing its suitability for in vivo applications.

Abstract
This review highlights recent developments in the field of biodegradable polymeric materials intended to replace non-degradable conventional plastics, focusing on studies from the last ten years involving the stereoselective ring-opening polymerization of cyclic esters. This encompasses exciting advances in both catalyst design and monomer scope. Notably, the last decade has seen the emergence of metal-free stereocontrolled ROP for instance, as well as the synthesis and stereocontrolled polymerization of new types of chiral monomers. This study will emphasize recent stereoselective polymerization catalysts and chiral monomers and will focus on stereocontrol quantification, the mechanisms of stereocontrol and their differentiation if reported and studied for a specific catalyst system.
