Effects of Coloring Liquid Dipping Time and Surface Finishing Procedures on the Optical Properties of Monolithic Zirconia

BACKGROUND

Monolithic zirconia restorations can be produced from self-colored or uncolored blocks. The coloring procedure of uncolored blocks and surface treatments may affect the appearance of the restoration.

AIM

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effect of liquid coloring and surface treatments on optical properties of translucent monolithic zirconia.

METHODS

All specimens were cut from zirconia blocks with a thickness of 1 mm. Specimens were dipped in the coloring liquids for 3 min, 5 min, and 7 min and then divided into groups of 10 specimens for surface treatments. Glaze and mechanical polishing were applied, and the color of the specimens was measured under the D65 lighting condition with a spectrophotometer device. Color values obtained from the CIE Lab formula and the translucency parameter (TP), opalescence parameter (OP), and contrast ratio (CR) were calculated. The normality of the data was confirmed with the Shapiro-Wilk test. A three-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to assess the effect of dipping time, liquid shade, and surface treatments.

RESULTS

The effect of liquid shade and dipping time on the TP, OP, and CR parameters were statistically significant, and the TP values were reduced with the application of coloring liquid. Mechanical polishing groups had higher OP values and lower TP values than glazed groups.

CONCLUSION

In cases where high translucency is required, it may be advisable to use self-colored blocks and apply glaze as a surface treatment to achieve the desired optical properties.

Effect of thickness of externally characterized stains on optical properties of high-translucency zirconia

OBJECTIVES

There is insufficient information about the effects of the thickness of externally characterized stains or glazes on CIELAB color parameters and the translucency parameter (TP) of 5 mol% yttria partially stabilized zirconia (5Y-PSZ). The present study evaluated the effect of a thickness reduction of the externally characterized or glazed layer on its CIE2000 color parameters and TP₀₀ of 5Y-PSZ.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Twenty-eight specimens were sectioned from 5Y-PSZ blanks. Three brands of powdered stains (namely VI, SH, and IV) and a glaze (GL) were used to extrinsically stain the specimen surfaces (n = 7 per group). After measuring the final thickness and color, specimens of each group were carefully ground and finally polished. The reduced thickness was carefully controlled in decrements of 0.02 mm on the characterized stains or glazed layers at each reduction cycle until the surface of the un-stained zirconia was exposed. The CIELAB color parameters of specimens were measured using a spectrophotometer. Subsequently, differences in lightness (∆L'), chroma (∆C'), and hue (∆H'), and TP₀₀ values and color differences (ΔE₀₀) were calculated using the CIEDE2000 formula to determine differences between the specimen and the un-stained zirconia at each reduction cycle. A paired-samples t-test, two-way mixed-design analysis of variance, and Pearson correlation coefficient were used to analyze the data (α = 0.05).

RESULTS

There were no significant differences in lightness, chroma, hue, or TP₀₀ values before or after glazing or after each reduction cycle of the glazed layer. Mean ΔE₀₀ values ranged between 20.94 and 33.55 after applying the externally characterized stains. With a decreased thickness of the characterized stain layer, there were observed that significant decreases in ∆L', ∆H', ∆C', and ΔE₀₀, and significant increases in TP₀₀.

CONCLUSIONS

Increasing the thickness of externally characterized stains decreased the lightness and caused the alternation of chroma and hue, whereas these phenomena were not observed in the glazed group. There was a slight change of CIE2000 color parameters and TP₀₀ when the thickness of the characterized layer exceeded 0.06 mm.

CLINICAL RELEVANCE

The application and thickness of externally characterized stains can sensitively affect CIE2000 color parameters and translucency of 5Y-PSZ.

Effect of toothbrushing on the optical properties and surface roughness of extrinsically stained high-translucency zirconia

OBJECTIVES

The effect of toothbrushing on the color, relative translucency, and surface roughness of extrinsically stained zirconia dental restorations is still unclear. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the optical properties and surface textures of extrinsically stained or glazed partially stabilized zirconia with 5 mol% yttria (5Y-PSZ) after toothbrushing by determining changes in the color, translucency parameter (TP), and surface roughness.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Specimens (2 mm thick; n = 50) were sectioned from 5Y-PSZ blanks. Three brands of powdered stains (namely VI, SH, IV) and a glaze (GL) were used to extrinsically stain the specimen surfaces (n = 10 per group). The specimens were subjected to 10,000-50,000 simulated toothbrushing strokes using a toothpaste slurry (Ora2 PREMIUM Stain clear paste). The color parameters were measured before staining or glazing and before and after simulated brushing. The color changes and TP values can be calculated before and after simulated brushing. The surface roughness was also evaluated.

RESULTS

Significant changes were found in the shade and TP values of 5Y-PSZ after extrinsic staining, but no significant changes were found after toothbrushing, irrespective of the staining brand (p > 0.05). The surface roughness of the characterized 5Y-PSZ specimens decreased after toothbrushing, whereas that of the non-characterized 5Y-PSZ group increased.

CONCLUSIONS

Toothbrushing markedly affects the surface roughness of extrinsically stained or glazed 5Y-PSZ specimens, whereas no impacts on the color or translucency were observed.

CLINICAL RELEVANCE

For esthetic reasons, clinicians and dental technicians prefer to apply extrinsic stains to zirconia restorations, which profoundly affects its appearance. The limited influence of toothbrushing on color and translucency of 5Y-PSZ is promising for clinical applications.

Spectrophotometric study determining staining tendency in different restorative materials (longitudinal in vitro study)

Aim

Our aim was to measure the discolouration degrees in a packable composite, zircon, ceramic, a flowable composite, and GIC (glass isomer cement) and to determine their tendencies to discolour to provide guidance to dentists and prosthodontist for choosing proper materials for cases in which aesthetics is the main treatment goal.

Materials and methods

Sixty discs were fabricated from the composite, zircon, ceramic, the flowable composite, and GIC, and natural teeth were the control group. The shades were recorded using the Ivoclar Vivadent Shade Guide, and readings were recorded from a Vita Easyshade 4.0 spectrophotometer before immersion, after 1 week, 2 weeks, 3 weeks, and 24 weeks of immersion in coffee. The analysis was performed using a SPSS paired t-test and CIE 76 formula.

Results

The ceramic had a starting shade of B1 and kept the same colour throughout the testing period. Zircon had a starting shade of A3 and transitioned to B3 by the second week. The composite had a shade of A1, and after the first week, it was A4; in the second week and afterwards, it was C4. The flowable composite had a starting shade of A1, and after one week, the shade was B3, and then after one more week A3.5; after five months, it was A4.

Conclusion

The ceramic showed no change, making it ideal for aesthetic regions and anterior replacements. Zircon had the second-highest colour stability, whereas all the other materials showed variable degrees of colour and surface changes, making them not ideal choices for anterior restorations. Thus, this information can aid choices for aesthetic regions to provide the highest longevity.

Effects of surface treatments and abutment shades on the final color of high-translucency self-glazed zirconia crowns

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

Achieving excellent esthetics with monolithic self-glazed zirconia crowns in anterior teeth is challenging, and the impact of different surface treatments and abutment shades on the final color is unclear.

PURPOSE

The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate the effects of different external surface treatments (self-glazed, milled, polished, and glazed), different intaglio surface treatments (milled and airborne-particle abraded), and different abutment shades on the color difference of high-translucency self-glazed zirconia crowns.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

Sixty shade A1 and 60 shade A3 crowns were fabricated with a thickness of 0.80 ±0.02 mm and randomly divided into 12 groups (n=10). Different external and intaglio surface treatments were applied. Shade A1 and A3 abutments were made with composite resin. Color was measured with a spectrophotometer and expressed in CIELab coordinates, and color differences (ΔE₀₀) between specimens and references were calculated. The data were analyzed with ANOVA and the Tukey post hoc test. The impact of different surface treatments and abutment shades on the color difference were compared by using multiple linear regression (α=.05).

RESULTS

The effects of external surface treatments, intaglio airborne-particle abrasion, and abutment shades on the L∗, a∗, b∗ and ΔE₀₀ values of the final color of the crowns were significantly different (P<.001). Polishing resulted in the greatest ΔE₀₀ value among all external surface treatments (P<.001). The average ΔE₀₀ values of all crowns on the A3 abutment were higher than those of all crowns on the A1 abutment (P<.001). The influence on the color difference was abutment>external surface treatment>intaglio surface treatment.

CONCLUSIONS

Different surface treatments affected the final color of zirconia crowns, and a greater impact was seen with external surface treatments than with intaglio surface treatments. External polishing resulted in the greatest color difference. The abutment shade had the most effect on the color difference, as the darker the abutment color, the greater the color difference.

Effect of coloring liquids on color of zirconia frameworks and bond strength of zirconia/veneering ceramic

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

Zirconia substructures must be colored to fabricate esthetic restorations. However, the coloring procedure may affect the color match and bond strength of the veneering ceramic to the zirconia.

PURPOSE

The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate the bond strength of veneering ceramic to zirconia after dipping in coloring liquid for different durations and to compare the color of dipped blocks with precolored blocks.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

Sixty-four cube-shaped specimens were fabricated from uncolored zirconia blocks by using computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing and divided into 4 groups (n=16). The G30 group was subjected to coloring liquids for 30 seconds, G60 for 60 seconds, and G120 for 120 seconds. After the coloring procedures, the color of the specimens was evaluated by using a spectrophotometer. Precolored zirconia (PCZ) was used as the control. Once the color measurements were completed, the same specimens were prepared for the bond strength test, with 2 groups as the control: PCZ and the uncolored control group (control bond-strength [CBS]). Veneering ceramic was applied to the zirconia specimens and sintered. The shear bond test was conducted using universal testing equipment with a crosshead speed of 1 mm/min. Statistical analysis was carried out by using 1-way ANOVA followed by the Tukey HSD test (α=.05). A Weibull analysis was performed, and the Weibull modulus was calculated for each group.

RESULTS

The mean E value for the PCZ group (77.34 ±0.22) was statistically significantly different from that of all groups (PCZ-G30; P=.018, PCZ-G60; P= <.001, PCZ-G120; P<.001). The mean E value for G60 group was significantly different from mean E values of the G30 and G120 groups (G60-G30; P<.001, G60-G120; P<.001). The PCZ group had the highest mean shear bond strength value (31.5 ±7.67 MPa) and was significantly different from the mean bond strength values of the G120 and CBS groups (PCZ-G120; P=.008, PCZ-CBS; P<.001). The CBS had the lowest mean bond strength value (16.62 ±7.11 MPa) and was statistically significantly lower than that of the G60 group (CBS-G60; P=.001). The Weibull modulus was 64.78 for the PCZ group and 0.1 for the G120 group.

CONCLUSIONS

Immersing zirconia in coloring liquid altered the color and negatively affected the bond strength between the veneering ceramic and zirconia.

Effects of accelerated artificial aging on the translucency and color stability of monolithic ceramics with different surface treatments

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

Different surface finishing procedures can be applied to monolithic restorations. However, information is limited regarding the long-term performance of these procedures.

PURPOSE

The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate the effect of aging on the translucency and color stability of monolithic ceramics with different surface finishing procedures.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

Disk-shaped (14×1.5 mm) specimens of monolithic zirconia (Zirkonzahn Prettau [ZZ]) and lithium disilicate glass-ceramic (IPS e.max Press [IPS]) were fabricated. The specimens were divided into 3 subgroups according to the surface treatments (n=9, G: glazing, R: rubber polishing system, and P: rubber polishing system followed by polishing paste). Color measurements were made by using a spectrophotometer before and after an ultraviolet aging process. L*, a*, and b* parameters were recorded. ΔE and translucency parameter (TP) values were calculated. One specimen from each subgroup was examined by scanning electron microscopy (×30 000). The data were statistically analyzed using the Mann-Whitney U, Kruskal-Wallis, and post hoc tests (α=.05).

RESULTS

ΔE values of group ZZ (5.03) exceeded the clinically acceptable level (3.5); however, the color change was not clinically perceptible for IPS (0.41). The ΔE value of the subgroup P was found to be higher than that of the others for ZZ (P<.001). The ΔE value was not affected by the surface treatment for IPS. Group IPS showed significantly higher translucency than the ZZ group (P<.001). TP values were not affected by the surface treatment in either material and decreased after aging. However, changes in the TP values were too slight to be clinically perceptible.

CONCLUSIONS

Lithium disilicate ceramic was found to be more esthetic than monolithic zirconia ceramic in terms of color stability and translucency.

Low-fusing porcelain glaze application does not damage the fatigue strength of Y-TZP

This study evaluated and compared the effects of two glaze application methods (brush and spray) on the fatigue strength and surface characteristics (topography and roughness) of a translucent yttrium stabilized partially tetragonal zirconia polycrystal ceramic (Y-TZP) prior to and after grinding. Disc-shaped specimens of translucent Y-TZP (Vita YZ-HT; Vita-Zahnfabrik) were processed (ISO 6872-2015) and randomly allocated into 6 groups, according to the surface treatments performed on the tensile surface: Ctrl - as-sintered (no treatment); Gr - grinding with a diamond bur (181 μm-grit; #3101G); Br - glaze obtained from a powder-liquid mix and applied by brush (Vita Akzent; Vita Zahnfabrik); Sp - glaze application via spray (Vita Akzent Plus; Vita Zahnfabrik); Gr + Br and Gr + Sp - association of grinding + respective glaze method. Analyses of surface roughness (Ra and Rz), fatigue strength (staircase method), surface topography and fractography were carried out. The as-sintered condition had the smoothest surface, while grinding led to the rougher and more heterogeneous topography. Both glaze application methods showed a potential for topography evenness (smoothening effect), while the glaze spray method led to thinner layers of material, showing a limitation in reducing the roughness compared to the brush method. No deleterious effect on fatigue strength of the Y-TZP could be observed, as the glaze-spray application on the as-sintered surface showed the highest values. Fractography depicted two distinct fracture origin regions: from defects in the surface/sub-surface region for the Ctrl and Gr groups; and at the zirconia-glaze layer interface for Br, Sp, Gr + Br and Gr + Sp. The clinical relevance of this work is that the tested glaze application methods did not damage the fatigue strength of the tested Y-TZP.

Effects of fabrication and shading technique on the color and translucency of new-generation translucent zirconia after coffee thermocycling

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

The color stability and translucency of preshaded and externally shaded monolithic and veneered new generation translucent zirconia are not well known.

PURPOSE

The purpose of this in vitro study was to investigate the effect of fabrication (veneered or monolithic) and shading (preshaded or externally shaded) techniques on the color and relative translucency of translucent zirconia after coffee thermocycling.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

Specimens of different thicknesses (0.5 mm for veneered and 1.5 mm for monolithic) were sectioned from preshaded and externally shaded translucent zirconia. Externally shaded specimens were colored by using the dipping technique. Externally shaded (Ext Mono) and preshaded (Pre Mono) monolithic zirconia specimens were sintered and glazed. Externally shaded (Ext Vene) and preshaded (Pre Vene) 0.5-mm-thick specimens were sintered, veneered with feldspathic porcelain (1 mm), and glazed. The color coordinates of specimens were measured with a spectroradiometer before and after 10 000 thermocycles in coffee solution. Color differences were calculated using CIEDE2000, and relative translucency parameter (RTP) values were calculated using the RTP_CIEDE2000 formula. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to analyze the CIEDE2000 color differences and RTP values (α=.05).

RESULTS

Shading technique had a significant effect on the color difference values (P=.018). For the translucency data, the 3-way ANOVA revealed a significant interaction between the fabrication technique and shading technique (P=.002). Each pair of material subgroups within each combination of fabrication technique and shading technique was found to have a significantly different RTP, except between Ext Vene and Pre Vene (P=.115).

CONCLUSIONS

Externally shaded translucent zirconia had a greater color change in coffee than the preshaded translucent zirconia, either in monolithic or veneered form. Fabrication technique significantly affected the RTP, and the monolithic zirconia was more translucent than the veneered zirconia.

Effect of shading technique and thickness on color stability and translucency of new generation translucent zirconia

OBJECTIVE

To evaluate the effect of shading technique and thickness on the color stability and translucency of translucent zirconia after coffee thermocycling.

METHODS

Specimens in different thicknesses (1; 1.5; 2 mm) (n = 4 for each thickness) were sectioned from translucent preshaded zirconia (Pre) and externally shaded zirconia (Ext). After sintering, specimens were glazed and subjected to 10,000 thermocycling in coffee solution. The color coordinates of specimens were measured with a spectroradiometer before and after coffee thermocyling. Color differences and relative translucency parameter (RTP) values were calculated with CIEDE2000 color difference and TP_CIEDE2000 formulas. ANOVA was used to analyze the CIEDE2000 color difference and RTP values (α = 0.05).

RESULTS

According to 2-way ANOVA, no significant effect of shading technique and thickness on the color difference values was found (P > .05). According to 3-way ANOVA, a significant interaction between the shading technique and thickness (P < .0001) was found for RTP. The RTP parameter decreased with the increase in the thickness. Ext specimens presented significantly higher RTP than Pre specimens (P < .0001), except for between Ext 1 mm and Pre 1 mm (P = .179).

CONCLUSIONS

Neither shading technique nor tested thicknesses affected the color of translucent zirconia. Shading technique and thickness affected the RTP of translucent zirconia. The RTP was inversely affected with the thickness of the material. Externally shaded zirconia presented higher RTP than preshaded zirconia for specimens thicker than 1 mm.

CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE

Discoloration with coffee was insignificant for the tested translucent zirconia in tested thicknesses (1, 1.5, 2 mm). When a translucent restoration is intended, thinner externally shaded translucent zirconia restorations should be preferred instead of preshaded translucent zirconia.

The effect of coloring liquid dipping time on the fracture load and color of zirconia ceramics

PURPOSE

The aims of the study were to evaluate the fracture load of zirconia core material after dipping in coloring liquid at different time intervals and to compare the color of dipped blocks with that of prefabricated shaded blocks.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

3-unit bridge frameworks were designed digitally. Sixty frameworks were fabricated using uncolored zirconia blocks by CAD/CAM and divided into 4 groups randomly (n = 15). Group 2 (G2) was subjected to coloring liquids for 2 minutes, Group 4 (G4) for 4 minutes, and Group 6 (G6) for 6 minutes. CFS group was not subjected to any coloring procedure. After coloring, color differences between the test groups and a prefabricated shaded zirconia group (CPZ, n = 15) were evaluated by using a spectrophotometer. Fracture test was conducted immediately after shade evaluation with a Testometric test device at a cross-head speed of 1 mm/sec. Statistical analysis for evaluating color and fracture load was performed by using one way ANOVA followed by Tukey HSD test (P ≤ .05). Weibull analysis was conducted for distribution of fracture load.

RESULTS

There was no difference in terms of fracture load and color between CFS (1176.681 N) and G2 (985.638 N) group and between CPZ (81.340) and G2 (81.140) group, respectively. Fracture load values of G4 (779.340 N) and G6 (935.491 N) groups were statistically significantly lower than that of CFS group (P ≤ .005). The color values of G4 (79.340) and G6 (79.673) groups were statistically different than that of CPZ group (P ≤ .005).

CONCLUSION

Prolonged immersion of zirconia in coloring liquid not only negatively affected the fracture load of the zirconia being tested in the current study but also deteriorated the desired shade of the restoration.
