Effect of Aprotic Solvents on the Microtensile Bond Strength of Composite Core and Fiber-Reinforced Composite Posts

This investigation evaluated the effects of aprotic solvents, i.e., tetrahydrofuran, pyridine, and morpholine, compared with hydrogen peroxide, on the surfaces of fiber-reinforced composite posts with a composite core based on the microtensile bond strength. In total, 150 FRC Postec Plus posts and 150 D.T. Light-Posts were randomly divided into three groups (non-thermocycling, 5000-cycle, and 10,000-cycle thermocycling groups). Each group was divided into five subgroups according to the post-surface treatment: C, non-treatment group; H2O2, immersed in 35% hydrogen peroxide; THF, immersed in tetrahydrofuran; PY, immersed in pyridine; and MP, immersed in morpholine. The treated specimens were placed in the bottom of a plastic cap and filled with a composite core material in preparation for the microtensile bond test. The data were evaluated using one-way ANOVA and Tukey's test (p < 0.05) as well as an independent t-test (p < 0.05). For the surface roughness, white light interferometry was used for measurement, and the mean surface roughness was analyzed via one-way ANOVA and Tukey's test (p < 0.05). The results showed that, under non-thermocycling conditions, the PY subgroup with D.T. Light-Post had the highest microtensile bond strength, followed by THF, MP, H2O2, and the control groups. For FRC Postec Plus, the PY group had the highest microtensile bond strength, followed by MP, THF, H2O2, and the control groups. Although the thermocycling conditions decreased the microtensile bond strength in all groups, the PY subgroup still had the highest value. An independent t-test revealed that even under all non-thermocycling and 5000- and 10,000-cycle thermocycling conditions, D.T. Light-Post in the PY subgroup displayed significantly higher microtensile bond strengths than FRC Postec Plus in the PY subgroup. While the surface roughness of the fiber-reinforced composite posts showed that the posts treated with pyridine possessed the highest surface roughness for each material type, In conclusion, as an aprotic solvent, pyridine generates the highest microtensile bond strength between the interfaces of composite cores and fiber-reinforced composite posts.

Effect of Different Silane Coupling Agents on the Bond Strength between Hydrogen Peroxide-Etched Epoxy-Based- Fiber-Reinforced Post and Composite Resin Core

The aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of various silane coupling agents on the micro-push-out bond strength between a hydrogen peroxide-etched epoxy-based fiber-reinforced post and composite resin core. Seventy-five cross-linked epoxy-based fiber-reinforced posts were etched with 24% hydrogen peroxide for 10 min. Then they were divided into five groups according to various silane coupling agents and bonded to a composite core. A Universal Testing Machine was utilized to evaluate the push-out bond strength. In addition, all groups' modes of failure were assessed. The push-out bond strength data in MPa were analyzed using ANOVA and a Tukey HSD post hoc test to reveal any difference between the groups. Results revealed that the application of a two-bottle silane coupling agent exhibited the highest bond strength, while the application of a one-bottle silane coupling agent demonstrated the lowest bond strength for a hydrogen peroxide-etched fiber post bonded to a composite core material, which was statistically significant (p < 0.05). The strongest association with the highest bond strength was found with the two-bottle silane coupling agent when compared to the one-bottle. The study highlighted that the application of a silane-coupling agent may affect the bond strength between composite and epoxy-based fiber-reinforced posts.

Fracture resistance of weakened roots restored with relined or milled CAD-CAM glass fiber posts

This in vitro study compared the fracture resistance of weakened roots restored with milled or relined glass fiber post (GFP). Seventy bovine incisors were divided into seven groups, according to the weakening protocol (none: control; medium-weakened: MW; highly-weakened: HW) and post anatomization technique (non-relined, relined with Bulk Fill or Z350 resin; milled GFP: M). Roots were thermomechanical cycled and submitted to compression. Frequencies and groups were compared by the chi-square test and two-factor ANOVA, Tukey's, and t-test (α=5%). The HW-M obtained the lowest values, showing significant differences compared to all groups (p<0.001). The highest value was HW-Bulk fill, with significant difference compared to MW-M (p=0.037) and HW-M (p<0.001). The frequency of repairable fractures was 100% in the control, 87%, and 63% in the MW and HW, respectively. Relined or milled GFPs can be considered to rehabilitate weakened teeth since failure patterns were predominantly repairable in all groups.

Push-out Bond Strength of Two Fiber Posts in Composite Resin Using Different Types of Silanization

OBJECTIVES

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of different surface treatments and thermocycling (TC) on the push-out bond strength of two brands of glass fiber posts (GFPs) to composite resin.

METHODS

White Post DC (WP) (FGM Dental Group International, Joinville, Santa Catarina, BR) and Exacto (EC) (Angelus, Clinical Research Dental, Londrina, PR, Brazil). GFPs were cleaned with 70% alcohol and divided into five groups, according to the surface treatment (n=15): control (C), without treatment; prehydrolyzed silane (S-pre) (Prosil, FGM Dental Group International); 37% phosphoric acid + prehydrolyzed silane AcS-pre); Scotchbond Universal Adhesive System (AdU), 3M Oral Care; two-bottle silane (S2B) (Dentsply Sirona Inc). The composite resin was inserted around the posts by using a split matrix. The samples were cut into 1-mm slices. Half of the samples were subjected to the push-out test immediately, and the other half underwent TC before the test. After failure analysis, the data were submitted to three-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) (α=0.05).

RESULTS

EC achieved higher bond strength than WP, regardless of TC (p<0.05). Regarding WP, surface treatments (p<0.001) and TC (p<0.001) influenced bonding strength. As for EC without TC, the highest bond strength (p<0.05) was found for C, then AcSpre, S-pre, AdU, and S2B. Application of TC resulted in a statistically higher bond strength values for the EC AcS-pre group (p<0.05), followed by S2B, S-pre, C, and AdU. The WP failures were predominantly cohesive, similar to the EC AdU and EC S2B groups. The other EC groups showed mostly mixed failures.

CONCLUSIONS

Surface treatment and TC affected the bond strength to composite resin, depending on which post was used. It is important for dentists to understand the effects of different types of silanization on their chosen post.

Effect of Glass Fiber Post Surface Treatment on Bond Strength of a Self-Adhesive Resin Cement: An "In Vitro" Study

Objective

This study evaluated the influence of different mechanical and chemical surface treatments alone and combined with silane on the bond strength (BS) of glass fiber posts (GFPs) using self-adhesive resin cement.

Methods

Eighty-four single-rooted bovine teeth (six groups, n = 14) were submitted to BS analysis after GFP cementation. The treatments applied in the studied groups were no surface treatment (control), silane (S), 24% hydrogen peroxide (PER), 24% hydrogen peroxide and silane (PER + SIL), blasting with 50 μm aluminum oxide particles (BLAST), and blasting with 50 μm aluminum oxide particles and silane (BLAST + SIL).

Results

BS differed significantly among groups (p < 0.001). It was higher in the SIL (10.5 ± 3.5 MPa), BLAST + SIL (11.5 ± 3.2 MPa), and PER + SIL (11.6 ± 4.6 MPa) groups than in the control (6.5 ± 2.9 MPa), BLAST (8.6 ± 4.0 MPa), and PER (7.1 ± 2.8 MPa) groups, with no significant difference among groups receiving silanization. Cement post adhesive failure was more common in the SIL, BLAST, and PER + SIL groups, and cement-dentin adhesive failure was more common in the control, BLAST + SIL, and PER groups.

Conclusion

These results show that silane application alone increases BS.

Impact of different surface treatment methods on bond strength between fiber post and composite core material

PURPOSE

To assess the impact of different surface treatments on the push-out bond strength between fiber post and a composite resin core material.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

Seventy-two glass-fiber posts were randomly assigned into six groups according to the method of surface treatment: Control (no treatment), silane, sandblasting, hydrofluoric acid, hydrogen peroxide, and hydrogen peroxide with sandblasting. Two posts from each group were inspected under a scanning electron microscope to assess the surface modifications and 10 posts were employed for the push-out test. Each post was placed vertically in the middle of a cylindrical putty matrix and a dual-cure composite resin material was applied for core build-up. Two discs of each specimen were cut using a low-speed diamond saw (total 120 discs). The push-out test was executed using a universal testing machine at a crosshead speed of 0.5 mm/min. Statistical analysis was performed using one-way ANOVA and Tukey's test (p ≤ 0.05). The mode of failure of each disc was evaluated under SEM.

RESULTS

The sandblasting and hydrofluoric acid groups presented significantly higher bond strength than control and hydrogen peroxide groups. The hydrogen peroxide groups exhibited significantly the lowest bond strength of all groups. There was no significant difference between the control and silane groups. All groups showed predominantly adhesive failure except the hydrogen peroxide with sandblasting, where the cohesive failure of the post was predominant.

CONCLUSIONS

Sandblasting and hydrofluoric acid surface treatments demonstrated superior results to silane and hydrogen peroxide. The combined method of hydrogen peroxide and sandblasting could weaken the fiber post and lead to clinical fractures.

Retention force of fiber-reinforced composite resin post on resin composite for core buildup -Effects of fiber orientation, silane treatment and thermal cycling

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of fiber orientation, silane treatment, and thermal cycling on the retention force of fiber-reinforced composite resin (FRC) posts on resin composite. Two types of FRC posts (linear and woven) were prepared with and without silane treatment. Pull-out test specimens were made of FRC posts and resin composite for core buildup. Specimens were either incubated in distilled water for 24 h or subjected to 10,000 thermal cycles. The maximum fracture load obtained by a pull-out test was defined as the retention force. Fracture modes were observed after the test. Fiber orientation and thermal cycling did not affect the retention force on resin composite, and the retention force was improved by silane treatment. Whereas, fiber orientation affected the fracture mode. The result showed woven fiber orientation could contribute to the mechanically interlocking with the resin composite.

Push-Out Bond Strength Evaluation of Fiber-Reinforced Composite Resin Post Cemented with Self-Adhesive Resin Cement Using Different Adhesive Bonding Systems

The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate the push-out bond strength of fiber-reinforced resin posts using self-adhesive cements with different adhesive systems. A total of 50 single-rooted human maxillary premolars with fully developed apices and 15–16 mm straight root canals were selected. The teeth were divided into 10 groups with coronal and apical parts according to the adhesive bonding system and luting material used: one universal adhesive with MDP-containing self-adhesive resin cement; another universal adhesive with MDP-containing self-adhesive resin cement; universal primer with MDP-containing self-adhesive resin cement; universal primer with dual-cure resin cement; MDP-containing self-adhesive resin cement only (Control). Each specimen was subjected to a fatigue load of 600,000 cycles using a chewing simulator with sliding movement and cut horizontally for push-out bond strength testing. Statistical evaluation consisted of a one-way ANOVA test using SPSS v23.0. The highest bond strength (7.05 MPa) was obtained in the coronal part of the Single Bond universal group treated with MDP-containing self-adhesive resin cement and the lowest strength (4.77 MPa) was observed in apical part of MDP-containing self-adhesive resin cement group (Control). However, the one-way ANOVA results showed no significant difference between all 10 groups (p > 0.05). The self-adhesive cement without adhesive bonding showed no statistically different value compared to self-adhesive cements with adhesive bonding.

Light transmission and bond strength of glass fiber posts submitted to different surface treatments

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

Light transmitted deep into the root canal is an important parameter to increase bonding of the cement to the post and dentin. Glass fiber posts seem to be an option to increase transmitted light, but literature on the light transmittance profile and power transmission to deep canal regions is lacking.

PURPOSE

The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate light delivered by 2 types of fiberglass posts submitted to different surface treatments and to evaluate the bond strength.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

Whiteposts and Superposts were allocated to 4 groups: no surface treatment, surface treatment with 24% hydrogen peroxide, surface treatment with silane, and surface treatment with 24% hydrogen peroxide plus silane. The total light transmitted by the posts was measured by using an integrating sphere to collect the diffuse light. The light profile that was laterally delivered to the post was measured with a power detector equipped with an optical fiber probe. The bond strength was measured with the push-out test. Scanning electron microscopy was used to evaluate the surface treatments. The light transmission data were analyzed by using a generalized linear model and the Bonferroni test and the bond strength values were evaluated by using ANOVA and the Tukey test (α=.05).

RESULTS

The cervical third presented the highest transmission (74.1% for Whiteposts and 74.6% for Superposts), followed by the middle (20.9% for Whiteposts and 20.4% for Superposts) and apical (5.0% for both Whiteposts and Superposts) thirds. Superposts led to higher bond strength than Whiteposts (9.73 ±5.89 and 8.48 ±4.99 MPa, respectively). Surface treatment with silane and hydrogen peroxide plus silane afforded similar bond strength (11.4 ±6.4 and 10.7 ±5.6 MPa, respectively), which was higher as compared with the bond strength obtained after surface treatment with hydrogen peroxide. For both post types, the bond strength decreased from the cervical (12.2 ±6.0 MPa) to the middle (9.7 ±5.0 MPa) and apical (6.5 ±3.6 MPa) thirds.

CONCLUSIONS

Light transmission and bond strength decreased from the cervical to the apical third. Surface treatment impacted bond strength; light transmission through Whiteposts was slightly higher than light transmission through Superposts.

Microtensile bond strength of root canal dentin treated with adhesive and fiber-reinforced post systems

Nowadays, demand for esthetic restorations has risen considerably; thus, nonmetal esthetic posts made of either high-strength ceramics or reinforced resins, such as fiber-reinforced resin posts, have become more and more popular. Important characteristics of fiber-reinforced posts involve a modulus of elasticity similar to dentin and their ability to be cemented by an adhesive technique. A total of 36 maxillary incisors were divided into four groups. In this study, four adhesively luted fiber-reinforced (glass fiber, quartz glass fiber, zirconia glass fiber and woven polyethylene fiber ribbon) post systems were used. Post spaces were prepared by employing drills according to the protocol established for each group, and each post was adhesively luted with one of three adhesive systems. Three segments per root apical to the cementoenamel junction (CEJ) were obtained by sectioning the root under distilled water with a carbon spare saw. The samples (total of 108 sections) were 2.0±0.1 mm in thickness and they were stored individually in black film canisters with sterile distilled water. In order to determine the bond strength, the bonding area of each specimen was measured, and specimens were attached to a device to test microtensile strength at a speed of 1 mm/min. The analyses revealed no statistically significant differences between the adhesive systems and fiber-reinforced posts. (P> 0.05). However, the coronal portion of the root dentin had the highest bond strength. Adhesive systems used along with fiber-reinforced resin posts demonstrated reliable bonding.

The effectiveness of glass ionomer cement as a fiber post cementation system in endodontically treated teeth

This study compared the performance of a glass ionomer (GC Gold Label 1, GIC) as a fiber post cementation system for glass fiber posts with a self-adhesive resin cement (Relyx U200, RUC) and a conventional resin cement system (Scotchbond Muli-Purpose and Relyx ARC, RAC). Thirty endodontically treated canines were randomly divided in three groups (n = 10), according to the fiber post cementation system: (RAC)-Scotchbond Multi-Purpose and Relyx X ARC; (RUC)-Relyx U200 and (GIC)-GC Gold Label 1 Luting & Lining. Rhodamine was incorporated into the cementation system prior to the fiber post cementation. After glass fiber post cementation, roots were incubated in artificial saliva for 6 months. After that, specimens from the cervical, middle, and apical thirds of the post space were prepared and analyzed using a push-out bond strength test and confocal laser microscopy. ANOVA one way and Tukey tests showed that GIC and RUC demonstrated similar push-out bond strength values, independently of the post space third (p > .05); however, values were greater than those shown by RAC (p < .05). For dentin penetrability, GIC and RUC also had similar results (p > 0.05) and lower than RAC (p < 0.05). Inside the root canal, the cementation system using glass ionomer cement (GC Gold Label 1 Luting & Lining) has similar push-out bond strength to the self-adhesive resin cement (Relyx U200) and these were higher than the conventional resin (Relyx ARC), despite its higher dentin penetrability.

Effect of Fiber Post-Resin Matrix Composition on Bond Strength of Post-Cement Interface

Objective

To evaluate the influence of 3 different post-resin matrix systems cemented with dual-cure resin cement in simulated root canals made of PMMA acrylic sheet.

Methods

3 types of fiber posts (n = 60) with different resin matrixes divided into 3 groups: group 1 cross-linked FRC Postec Plus post (n = 20), group 2 cross-linked Rely X post (n = 20), and group 3 Interpenetrated IPN Everstick post (n = 20). All posts were cemented using Multilink Automix dual-cure cement. Posts were cemented into acrylic blocks in order to purely test the strength of cement-post interface. After one week storage at 37°C, two sections of 1 mm thickness from middle-third were subjected to micro-push-out test at crosshead speed 0.5 mm/min.

Results

The data were analyzed using one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA). The variable fiber post-matrix system was found to significantly affect the push-out bond strength (p < 0.001). Group 2 exhibited that the highest mean push-out bond strength was (5.36 + 2.3 MPa), and group 3 showed the lowest mean push-out (0.41 + 0.4 MPa). There was significant difference among the groups regarding the failure mode as chi-square test revealed (p < 0.001).

Conclusion

Prefabricated cross-linked posts with epoxy-based matrix demonstrated higher bond strength than prefabricated cross-linked posts with Bis-GMA-based matrix and posts with semi-IPN matrix when luted with dimethacrylate-based dual-cured resin cement.

Acidic pH weakens the bonding effectiveness of silane contained in universal adhesives

OBJECTIVES

Some silane-containing universal adhesives were introduced that a separate ceramic primer was unnecessary to glass-ceramic bonding because of incorporated silane. We aimed to investigate the effectiveness of silane in universal adhesives with acidic media.

METHODS

A functional γ-methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane (γ-MPTS) was used, and its pH value was adjusted to 2.7 by adding hydrochloric acid (HCl) or 10-methacryloxydecyl phosphate (MDP). The prepared acidic silane solutions after 2h or 10d storage were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), ¹H and ¹³C nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. Micro-shear bond strength (μSBS) was used to evaluate the bonding performance of glass ceramics. Two silane-containing and two silane-free universal adhesives were included. Field-emission scanning electron microscopy fractography analysis was also performed.

RESULTS

FTIR, ¹H and ¹³C NMR revealed that the hydrolysis of γ-MPTS and the self-condensation reaction of silanol groups occurred over time under acidic conditions (HCl or MDP solution). This reaction formed the siloxane oligomers. For glass-ceramic bonding, the μSBS of acidic silane after 10 d storage was lower than that of silane stored for 2h storage (p<0.05), although the difference among the μSBS of the four universal adhesives were nonsignificant (p>0.05). Additionally, cohesive failure was the main fracture pattern of universal adhesive bonding.

SIGNIFICANCE

The effectiveness of silane contained in low pH universal adhesives can be weakened by dehydration self-condensation and consequently became unstable. For the enhancement of glass-ceramic bonding efficiency with universal adhesives, a separate ceramic primer was recommended.

Comparison of push-out bond strength of fiber-reinforced composite resin posts according to cement thickness

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

Post space size and cement thickness can differ because of variations in root canal morphology, such as an oval shape, and because the entire canal space cannot be included in the post space preparation. As a result, increased cement thickness around the post may affect the bond strength between the post and the dentin.

PURPOSE

The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate the push-out bond strength of fiber-reinforced composite resin posts to root dentin with cement layers of varying thickness.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

Thirty human premolars were endodontically treated and restored with fiber-reinforced composite resin posts. Post space was prepared using a drill with a 1.5-mm diameter and diameters of 1.25 mm (small [S] group), 1.375 mm (medium [M] group), and 1.5 mm (large [L] group) were cemented. The specimens were sectioned horizontally into 1-mm-thick slices, and the push-out bond strengths of the apical and coronal fragments were evaluated. Bond strength was compared using analysis of variance and 2-sample t tests (α=.05).

RESULTS

No significant differences were found in the debonding force and push-out bond strength among fiber-reinforced composite posts of different sizes (P>.05). The mean debonding force and standard deviation of the posts were 25.05 ±9.52 N for the S group, 28.17 ±11.38 N for the M group, and 33.78 ±12.47 N for the L group. The corresponding push-out bond strength values were 3.11 ±1.54 MPa, 3.39 ±1.4 MPa, and 4.15 ±1.75 MPa. The differences in debonding force between the apical (26.43 ±10.72 N) and coronal (31.57 ±12.03 N) areas were not significant (P>.05). However, the differences in push-out bond strength between the apical (4.27 ±1.73 MPa) and coronal areas (2.83 ±1.08 MPa) were significant (P<.05).

CONCLUSIONS

The widening of post spaces and, consequently, the increased cement thickness do not significantly affect the bond strength of fiber-reinforced composite resin posts to root dentin.
