Abstract
BACKGROUND Temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) encompass pain and dysfunction in the jaw, muscles, and adjacent structures. This study aimed to explore the quantitative (condylar position, morphology) and qualitative (bone mineral density (BMD)) therapeutic outcomes following a stabilization splint (S.S.) therapy in adult patients diagnosed with TMD (Arthralgia) with/without lateral mandibular asymmetry (MA) using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT). METHODS In this retrospective clinical study, 60 adult TMD patients who received S.S. therapy were enrolled and allocated into the TMD group (TMDG) and TMD with MA group (TMD + MAG). The diagnosis was made according to the Diagnostic Criteria for TMD (DC/TMD) AXIS I. MA was measured from the mid-sagittal plane to the Menton point. CBCT was used to scan the temporomandibular joints pre- (T0) and post- (T1)-treatment for three-dimensional analysis. Intra- and intergroup statistical comparisons were performed using the Wilcoxon signed ranks and the Kruskal‒Wallis test. RESULTS For quantitative comparisons, there was a statistically significant difference between T0 and T1 in the joint spaces of TMD + MAG (anterior, superior, posterior, and coronal lateral on the deviated side as well as in the superior, coronal medial joint space of the contralateral side). Morphologically, the deviated side had a narrower condylar width, reduced condylar height, and a steeper eminence angle. In contrast, the contralateral side tended to have a greater condylar length. For qualitative measurements, BMD also showed statistical significance between T0 and T1 in the majority of the condyle slopes (AS, SS, PS, and LS on the deviated side and in AS and MS on the contralateral side) of TMD + MAG. Additionally, only the AS and PS showed significance in TMDG. CONCLUSION Multiple joint space widening (AJS and CMS) and narrowing (SJS, PJS, and CLS) could characterize the deviated side in TMD + MA. Factors like narrower condylar width, reduced condylar height, and steeper eminence angle on the deviated side can worsen TMD + MA. Proper alignment of the condyle-disc position is essential for optimal function and load distribution, potentially affecting bone mineral density (BMD). MA plays a prominent role in disturbing bone densities. S.S. therapy shows more evident outcomes in TMD + MAG (on the deviated side compared to the contralateral side) than the TMDG.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to explore the quantitative and qualitative condylar changes following stabilization splint (S.S) therapy, including condylar position, morphology, and bone mineral density (BMD) in subjects with temporomandibular disorders (TMD). MATERIALS AND METHODS In this retrospective clinical study, we enrolled 40 TMD subjects (80 joints) aged 18 to 35 years, for whom a S.S was used to treat TMD. The 80 TMD consists of 32 masticatory muscle disorders (myalgia) and 48 TMJ disorders (arthralgia). Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) was used to scan the TMJs of subjects pre- and post-treatment for three-dimensional analysis (3D). Using Mimics software v.21.0, quantitative (3D condylar and joint spaces dimensions parameters were measured using linear measurements in millimeters, according to the Kamelchuk method and Ikeda method, while the assessment of anteroposterior condyle position within the glenoid fossa was based on the method of Pullinger and Hollender), and qualitative (a round bone tissue with an area of 2 mm2 in three representative areas according to the Kamelchuk method to measure condylar BMD) pre- and post-treatment. Intra- and inter-group statistical comparisons were performed using the Wilcoxon signed ranks and the Kruskal-Wallis test, respectively. RESULTS The course of treatment was 6-12 months, with an average of 9.1 months. For the pre- and post-treatment quantitative comparisons, there was a statistically significant difference in the anterior joint space (AJS) and coronal medial space, as well as the condyle length in the myalgia group and condylar width in the arthralgia group. For qualitative measurements, a significant difference was observed in the posterior slope of the myalgia group and the arthralgia group's anterior, superior, and posterior slopes. The inter-group comparisons revealed significant differences in AJS, condylar length, and anterior slope density. CONCLUSION In short-term follow-up, the S.S influenced patients with TMD from different origins; it changes anterior and coronal medial joint space, condyle length in myalgia, and width in arthralgia. Furthermore, it improved the condyle bone density more evidently in arthralgia. CLINICAL RELEVANCE This study highlights the influence of S.S on symptomatic populations with TMD of different origins from a qualitative and quantitative perspective.

Abstract
Aim The study aimed to clinically and radiographically evaluate the effect of biphasic calcium phosphate (BCP) versus demineralized freeze-dried bone allograft (DFDBA) in treating periodontal disease. Method The study consisted of 44 patients. The sites were randomly assigned to receive one of two treatment modalities (BCP at site 1 and demineralized freeze-dried bone at site 2) by a computerized method. All the clinical data were measured with the help of a University of North Carolina-15 (UNC-15) probe at the baseline, three months, and six months postoperatively. Radiovisiographs were taken using a Rinn XCP® (Dentsply/Rinn Corp, Elgin, IL) system and an oral grid using the paralleling technique. A manual calculation of the defect area was undertaken at the end of six months and was compared with the other groups. Result The linear bone growth recorded for site 1 at the end of six months was 3.8 ± 1.14 mm, and site 2 was 4.6 ± 1.07 mm. The intergroup comparison showed more remarkable linear bone growth in site 2, which was statistically insignificant, with a mean difference of 0.8 ± 1.23 mm and a p-value of 0.07. Conclusion Improvements were observed on all the documented parameters. However, the sites treated with DFDBA showed better periodontal regeneration.

Abstract
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM The selective laser melting (SLM) process has become popular for the fabrication of frameworks for metal-ceramic restorations, although their surface roughness is greater than with cast or milled frameworks. Limited information is available regarding the surface mechanical characteristics of cobalt-chromium (Co-Cr) SLM-manufactured restorations. PURPOSE The purpose of this in vitro study was to adapt the laser parameters for a remelting strategy, scanning the outer boundary of Co-Cr specimens, to reduce surface roughness and solidification defects, to determine microhardness, to investigate surface morphology and microstructure, and to establish surface mechanical characteristics. MATERIAL AND METHODS Co-Cr specimens were SLM manufactured by using a typical melting (TM) strategy and an adaptive remelting (AR) strategy. The AR strategy involves rescanning 50% of the contour, varying the laser parameters. The roughness parameters considered were Ra and Rz. Vickers hardness was measured by microindentation with a 9.81-N force (ASTM E384-17). The surface morphology was investigated by scanning electron microscopy, the chemical composition by energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and the phase identification by using X-ray diffraction. The mechanical surface properties measured were the nanohardness, elastic modulus, and dissipation energy. One-way ANOVA with the Tukey procedure was used to compare the groups (α=.05). RESULTS The innovative AR strategy reduced the surface roughness by 45% compared with TM, comparable with their cast counterpart. The smoothest AR surface was obtained by using 75 W and 350 mm/s for the first scanning of the contour, followed by a second remelting with 80 W and 700 mm/s. The microstructure of AR specimens had limited solidification defects, a chemical composition similar to that of raw powder, and a surface microhardness over 600 HV1. A fine grain structure in a single matrix phase was detected both on TM and AR specimens. The mechanical characteristics of the smoothest Co-Cr surface were 218 GPa elastic modulus, 746 HVIT Vickers nanohardness, 21 243 pJ plastic energy, and 26% nanoindentation work ratio. Significant differences were observed between the melting strategies (P<.05) both for surface roughness and microhardness. CONCLUSIONS The laser scanning strategy affects both the surface roughness and the hardness of SLM-manufactured specimens. The results show that using the AR strategy and proper laser parameters can reduce the roughness and increase the surface hardness of Co-Cr specimens made of conventional powder feedstock.

Abstract
The present study assessed the retention forces corresponding to different telescopic systems used in removable prosthetic dentures. The telescopic systems were represented by Co–Cr alloy or zirconia-based primary crowns and Co–Cr secondary crowns. All crowns were manufactured using computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing technology (CAD/CAM). Two types of reference abutment teeth (upper canine and first upper molar) were selected in order to obtain the telescopic crowns and two taper angles—of 0° and 2°—were used for the design of the crowns. A number of 120 samples of telescopic crowns were obtained and subjected to mechanical tests, following a specific protocol, on a mechanical testing equipment. The retention of the telescopic systems was evaluated for different sets of cycles (up to 360), represented by movements that simulate the intraoral insertion and disinsertion of the telescopic systems. The present study highlights that the telescopic systems in which the primary crown is made of zirconia ceramics presents more advantages than those made of Co–Cr. All telescopic systems studied, highlighted that by modifying the taper angle from 0° to 2°, the retention forces have decreased, irrespective of the materials used for the fabrication of the primary crown, suggesting that by using a taper angle of 0°, which is known to be ideal, more efficient, and reliable prosthesis can be developed. Thus, even though the ceramic–metallic telescopic system exhibited the highest retention, all telescopic crowns evaluated registered values between 2–7 N, indicating that they are suitable for clinical use.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to evaluate the publications in the field of dentistry on the PubMed database over a span of 10 years, from 2009 to 2019. Articles published between January 2009 to December 2019 were searched for in the MEDLINE database via PubMed. Data analysis was done using R-base packages, including the specialized R-packages Bibliometrix and String. For descriptive statistics and sequence charting, SPSS version 23.0 was used. A total of 104,975 articles were extracted, with a total of 153,530 authors in the given time frame. The proportion of articles steadily increased from 2009, plateauing at its peak from 2010 to 2016, and then seeing a decline from 2017 to 2019. Journal articles (60.58%), comparative studies (16.05%) and case reports (10.8%) were recorded as the most reported type of publication globally, accounting for 81.43% of the total documents extracted. All the articles came from 81 countries, with the USA reporting the greatest number of published articles (45,911). Dentistry proves to be a multi-faceted arena and many researchers and authors around the globe are contributing to the burgeoning literature over time.

Abstract
Research and development in the applied sciences at the atomic or molecular level is the order of the day under the domain of nanotechnology or nano-science with enormous influence on nearly all areas of human health and activities comprising diverse medical fields such as pharmacological studies, clinical diagnoses, and supplementary immune system. The field of nano-dentistry has emerged due to the assorted dental applications of nano-technology. This review provides a brief introduction to the general nanotechnology field and a comprehensive overview of the synthesis features and dental uses of nano-materials including current innovations and future expectations with general comments on the latest advancements in the mechanisms and the most significant toxicological dimensions.

Abstract
Background:
The paper surveyed the knowledge of general practitioners to coronal restorations and temporomandibular dysfunction. The specific aim of this study was to evaluate the knowledge and therapeutic approaches of the general practitioners in terms of restoring occlusion, aesthetics and function after restorative treatments in other to make recommendations to prevent potential dysfunction of the temporomandibular joint.
Methodology:
A cross sectional descriptive survey was used. It was carried out on 86 dentists out of the entire population size of 152 dentists practicing within Abidjan’s center municipality, randomly selected from the database provided by the National College of Dental Surgeons of Ivory Coast. A structured questionnaire was administered to collect data, which was subsequently collated and analysed.
Results:
The majority of the practitioners (95.4%) knew how to diagnose TMJ dysfunction. The etiological factors were stress for 55.2% of the practitioners and amalgam overhang for 49.4% of them. The precautions used to avoid TMJ disorders consisted of good control of the occlusion after having performed a restoration (55%) and taking into account the occlusal morphology (32%) at the time of shaping. Fifty-four percent of the practitioners systematically reevaluated the restorations undertaken.
Conclusion:
Impairment of occlusion results in improper muscular responses and leads to changes in pressure at the level of the temporomandibular joint. This study revealed that the general practitioners of the town of Abidjan have a good level of knowledge of the consequences of poorly carried out restorations on the initiation of masticatory apparatus disorders.

Abstract
This comprehensive review of the 2018 dental literature is provided to inform busy dentists about progress in the profession. Developed by the Committee on Scientific Investigation of the American Academy of Restorative Dentistry, each author brings discipline-specific expertise to one of the 8 sections of the report including (1) prosthodontics; (2) periodontics, alveolar bone, and peri-implant tissues; (3) implant dentistry; (4) dental materials and therapeutics; (5) occlusion and temporomandibular disorders; (6) sleep-related breathing disorders; (7) oral medicine and oral and maxillofacial surgery; and (8) dental caries and cariology. The report targets important information that will likely influence day-to-day treatment decisions. Each review is not intended to stand alone but to update interested readers so that they may visit source materials if greater detail is desired. As the profession continues its march toward evidence-based clinical decision-making, an already voluminous library of potentially valuable dental literature continues to grow. It is the intention of this review and its authors to provide assistance in navigating the extensive dental literature published in 2018. It is our hope that readers find this work useful in the clinical management of patients moving forward.
