Abstract
OBJECTIVES The objective of this study was to analyze the occlusal contact characteristics of the food-impacted teeth using a new digital technique. METHODS A 3D occlusal analysis method was developed for studying the occlusal contact characteristics of teeth affected by food impaction. In this self-controlled study, food-impacted molars from 20 participants constituted the experimental group. The corresponding healthy teeth on the opposite side served as the control group. Variables such as occlusal force (OF), occlusal contact area (OCA), and the number and distribution of occlusal contact points (OCN) in the mesio-distal directions were measured and compared between the two groups. RESULTS There was no statistical significant difference in the values of OF, OCA and OCN between the food-impacted molars and the healthy control molars (P > 0.05). However, paired T-tests indicated significant difference in the proportion of mesial OF, OCA, and OCN in the second molars of the experimental group (0.22, 0.28 and 0.28, respectively) and the control group (0.66, 0.63, and 0.63 respectively) (P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS The abnormal distribution of occlusal contacts in the second molar, primarily characterized by excessive occlusal contact in the distal direction may contribute to the occurrence of food impaction. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE The present study identified variations in the distribution of occlusal contacts and occlusal component force in food-impacted teeth. These findings can assist dentists in making more targeted occlusal adjustments, or applying other treatment modalities, to effectively address food impaction.

Abstract
Dental implants are a regular feature in daily clinical practice and there is a need to undertake routine assessment and maintenance of implants and their restorations on par with that provided for natural teeth. Occlusal checks form an important part of the maintenance regime for preserving the integrity of implants, their restorations, and health of the peri-implant tissues. Implant restorations are subjected to the full characteristics and magnitude of occlusal forces, including those associated with parafunction. Compared with the periodontal ligament around teeth, the biophysical response to occlusal forces of osseointegration is different through the more rigid link of implant to bone and reduced proprioception. Risks attributable to occlusal forces primarily affect implant restorations and they are elevated in the presence of bruxism. The occlusal guidelines recommended by the literature are aimed at reducing these risks and regular assessment and maintenance of the occlusion is essential. A four-step sequence is presented to ensure that the annual occlusal checks include the patient's input and evaluation of restoration integrity, occlusal scheme, additional protection, and spatial changes.

Abstract
PURPOSE This systematic review was conducted to evaluate the prevalence of interproximal contact loss (ICL) between implant restorations and adjacent teeth in relation to age, gender, follow-up time, and arch location. METHODS This study followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines and was registered in the Open Science Framework (OSF). The formulated population, intervention, comparison, outcome (PICO) question was "What is the prevalence of the ICL between implant restoration and adjacent teeth?" The search strategy used four main electronic databases and an additional manual search was performed until February 2023. Clinical studies that evaluated the prevalence of interproximal open contact between implant restorations and adjacent teeth were included. A qualitative analysis for clinical studies was used to assess the risk of bias. In addition, a single-arm meta-analysis of proportion was performed to evaluate the percentage of mesial versus distal open contact and total ICL between implant restoration and adjacent teeth. RESULTS Fifteen studies published between 2014 and 2023 met the eligibility criteria. Seven studies presented ICL rates higher than 20%. All studies evaluated ICL in posterior regions (molar, premolar area). Five studies had an ICL rate lower than 50% and three studies had an ICL rate higher than 50%. One study assessed the interproximal contact at three months post-restoration insertion, four studies assessed the interproximal contact at 1-year follow-up and nine studies evaluated the interproximal contact over 2 years of follow-up. Mesial and distal ICL rates were 44.2% (95% CI: 30.6% to 58.6%) and 27.5% (95% CI: 10.5% to 55.0%), respectively. The heterogeneity between studies was high (I2 (95% CI) = 87.8% (75.9% to 93.8%). CONCLUSION Based on the results of the included studies, the prevalence of ICL was high, occurring more frequently at the mesial contact. There were no significant differences in relation to age, gender, and arch location.

Abstract
PURPOSE Complications can and do occur with implants and their restorations with causes having been proposed for some single implant complications but not for others. METHODS A review of pertinent literature was conducted. A PubMed search of vibration, movement, and dentistry had 175 citations, while stress waves, movement, and dentistry had zero citations as did stress waves, movement. This paper discusses the physics of vibration, elastic and inelastic collision, and stress waves as potentially causative factors related to clinical complications. RESULTS Multiple potential causes for interproximal contact loss have been presented, but it has not been fully understood. Likewise, theories have been suggested regarding the intrusion of natural teeth when they are connected to an implant as part of a fixed partial denture as well as intrusion when a tooth is located between adjacent implants, but the process of intrusion, and resultant extrusion, is not fully understood. A third complication with single implants and their crowns is abutment screw loosening with several of the clinical characteristics having been discussed but without determining the underlying process(es). CONCLUSIONS Interproximal contact loss, natural tooth intrusion, and abutment screw loosening are common complications that occur with implant retained restorations. Occlusion is a significant confounding variable. The hypothesis is that vibration, or possibly stress waves, generated from occlusal impact forces on implant crowns and transmitted to adjacent teeth, are the causative factors in these events. Since occlusion appears to play a role in these complications, it is recommended that occlusal contacts provide centralized stability on implant crowns and not be located on any inclined surfaces that transmit lateral forces that could be transmitted to an adjacent tooth and cause interproximal contact loss or intrusion. The intensity, form, and location of proximal contacts between a natural tooth located between adjacent single implant crowns seem to play a role in the intrusion of the natural tooth. Currently, there is a lack of information about the underlying mechanisms related to these occurrences and research is needed to define any confounding variables.

Abstract
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM The consequences of edentulism depend on its complexity and are far-reaching, but limited evidence regarding its association with neurologic health is available. PURPOSE The purpose of this systematic review was to establish the relationship between oral prosthetic rehabilitation and the regional increase in brain activity. MATERIAL AND METHODS This systematic review was registered in the International Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews (CRD42021262247), and the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses (PRISMA) guideline was followed. Randomized clinical trials, prospective studies comparing the brain activity of patients rehabilitated with and without the use of dental prostheses, and studies that analyzed the human brain by using noninvasive techniques were used as inclusion criteria. The risk of bias in each study was assessed by using the Risk Of Bias In Non-randomized Studies-of Interventions (ROBINS-I). RESULTS The search was carried out in the PubMed/MEDLINE, Embase, Cochrane Library, and https://clinicaltrials.gov databases up to June 2021. After a search conducted by 2 reviewers, 8 articles were included in the review. A regional increase in blood flow and regional cerebral activity during dental prosthesis use was identified in the studies. CONCLUSIONS A positive association was found between the different types of prosthetic rehabilitation and brain function. Prostheses may preserve and restore neurological health.

Abstract
Objective The aim was to evaluate the difference in the heat generated between zirconia (Zr) and steel (SS) drills, during implant site preparation. Material and methods This systematic review followed the PRISMA methodology criteria and used the JBI Critical Assessment Guidelines for Quasi-Experimental Studies for quality assessment. The electronic search was conducted by using the PubMed/MEDLINE, Embase, and Cochrane Library databases to January 2023. The formulated population, intervention, comparison, outcome (PICO) question was "Do zirconia drills generate less heat than steel drills during implant site preparation?". The meta-analysis was based on an inverse variance (IV) method. Results This review included 10 studies in vitro that used zirconia drills compared to steel drills with or without coatings. The meta-analysis indicated a significant difference between Zr drills and SS drills, with a lower bone temperature variation with Zr drills. Conclusions Despite the limitations of this review, it was concluded that Zr drills had significantly less temperature variation than SS drills.

Abstract
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM Although the emergence angle has been related to marginal bone loss, information regarding the relationship between the transmucosal configuration of a computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD-CAM) abutment at specific subgingival levels and the amount of marginal bone loss is lacking. PURPOSE The purpose of this retrospective clinical study was to evaluate the influence of CAD-CAM abutment profile angles, measured at different subgingival positions, on the marginal bone loss of posterior single-tooth implant-supported restorations. MATERIAL AND METHODS A total of 260 posterior single-tooth implant-supported restorations using CAD-CAM abutments were analyzed in 206 patients. All implants had internal conical seal connections with a platform-switched design. The following data were extracted using digital periapical radiography: emergence profile, profile angle at distance ranges of 0 to 1 mm, 1 to 2 mm, and 2 to 3 mm from the implant-abutment junction, and peri-implant marginal bone loss (MBL). The MBL was measured from the time of delivery of the restorations up to 7 years or more. A linear mixed model was applied to investigate whether there was a significant difference in MBL based on the emergence profile and time, followed by the Bonferroni correction post hoc test. A Pearson correlation analysis was used to analyze the correlation between the profile angle and MBL at each distance range. The cut-off points for each distance range were determined by using the c-index, and independent t tests were conducted based on these cut-off values to evaluate the statistical differences (α=.05 for all statistical analyses). RESULTS The convex emergence profile exhibited greater MBL than the concave and straight profiles at each follow-up visit (P<.001). A significant correlation was found between the profile angle and MBL in the 0 to 1 mm, 1 to 2 mm distance ranges. However, no significant correlation was found between the profile angle and MBL in the 2 to 3 mm distance range (P>.05). The cut-off points were 34 degrees at the mesial and 28 degrees at the distal in the 0 to 1 mm range, and 33 and 20 degrees at the mesial and distal in the 1 to 2 mm range. CONCLUSIONS The profile angle near the implant-abutment junction and the type of emergence profile of the CAD-CAM abutment were closely associated with MBL in implants with internal conical seal connection with a platform switch design.

Abstract
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM Although high survival rates of implant-supported fixed partial dentures (ISFPDs) have been reported, evidence for complications, failures, and factors that interfere with their longevity is lacking. PURPOSE The purpose of this scoping review was to review the literature to investigate the most common failures and complications of ISFPDs. MATERIAL AND METHODS This review followed the preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analyses scoping review (PRISMA ScR) guidelines, and the methodology was registered on the open science framework (osf.io/5xqkp). An electronic search was conducted in PubMed/MEDLINE, Embase, Cochrane Library, Scopus, and Web of Science databases and nonpeer-reviewed literature for articles published from 2013 to January 2023. Studies that evaluated the clinical performance of ISFPDs with at least 1 year of follow-up and described the concepts of failure and success were included. RESULTS The search yielded 5695 studies. Fourteen articles were included in this review for data extraction. Veneering porcelain fracture, screw fracture, and implant loss were the most common failures reported. Technical complications mainly involved screw loosening, loss of retention, and wear of the screw-access restoration. CONCLUSIONS Bruxism, mismatch of the thermal expansion coefficient, unsatisfactory support of the framework, choice of cement, shape of the titanium abutments, and extended length of the cantilever were associated with the longevity of the ISFPD. Despite the high survival rate of ISFPDs, data must be carefully interpreted because of the variation in the materials used to manufacture the ISFPD and the heterogeneity of the studies in this review.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The objective of this systematic review and meta-analysis (SRMA) was to investigate the influence of antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) on the bond strength of endodontic sealers to intraradicular dentin. METHODS This SRMA followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) and was registered in the International Prospective Registry of Systematic Reviews (PROSPERO) (CRD42022319856). A population, intervention, control, and outcome (PICO) question was formulated: "Does antimicrobial photodynamic therapy decrease the bond strength of root canal sealers?". A literature search was performed in PubMed/MEDLINE, Embase, Web of Science, Scopus, Cochrane Library, and ProQuest databases until July 2022. Joanna Briggs Institute Critical Assessment Guidelines for Quasi-Experimental Studies were used for quality assessment. The meta-analysis was based on the inverse variance (IV) method (p<0.05). RESULTS Out of an initial 345 articles, 8 in vitro studies were included, published between 2013 and 2022. The studies were qualitatively analyzed; two studies showed a positive effect, two studies a negative effect, and the other studies showed no effect on bond strength of endodontic sealers to intraradicular dentin. Seven of the studies were included in the SRMA, which indicated that there was no significant difference in bond strength when using aPDT (P = 0.90; MD: -0.03; 95% CI: -0.46 to -0.41). There was a high level of evidence for each meta-analysis outcome. CONCLUSION It can be concluded that the use of aPDT as a method of root canal disinfection does not negatively influence the bond strength of endodontic sealers in the root canal.

Abstract
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM Monolithic ceramic implant-supported restorations have been used to rehabilitate partially edentulous patients. However, knowledge of the survival and prosthetic complications of single crowns (SCs) and fixed partial dentures (FPDs) is limited. PURPOSE The purpose of this systematic review with meta-analysis was to evaluate the clinical performance of monolithic ceramic implant-supported SCs and FPDs in terms of survival and prosthetic complication rates. MATERIAL AND METHODS The systematic review was registered on the prospective register of systematic reviews (PROSPERO) (CRD42017078568). Five electronic databases were independently searched by 2 authors for articles published until May 2022. In addition, a hand search was performed in the nonpeer-reviewed literature, specific journals, and reference lists of included articles. A single-arm meta-analysis was performed by using the R program. The risk of bias and quality were assessed using the Cochrane risk of bias tools and the Newcastle-Ottawa scale. RESULTS Twenty-eight studies were included in the quantitative synthesis. A total of 1298 monolithic ceramic implant-supported restorations (1116 SCs and 182 FPDs) were evaluated in 1193 participants, with a median observation time of 24 months (range: 12 to 72 months). Meta-analysis indicated the proportion of failures and prosthetic complication rates of 2% (95% confidence interval [CI]: 1% to 4%) for SCs. No difference was observed for monolithic zirconia and lithium disilicate SCs. In the FPDs, only monolithic zirconia was considered, with 1 failure reported totaling the proportion of failures of 0% (0% to 1%) and complication rates of 4% (0% to 12%). The most complications reported for both types of restorations were screw loosening, debonding, and minor chipping and were considered repairable. The included studies showed a low risk of bias and good quality. CONCLUSIONS The use of monolithic ceramic implant-supported SCs, independent of ceramic material, and monolithic zirconia implant-supported FPDs should be considered an effective and safe treatment option because of favorable short-term survival and low prosthetic complications. However, additional well-conducted studies with a longer-term follow-up and direct comparison between veneered restorations are recommended to reassess clinical performance.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The present study aimed to investigate the prevalence of peri-implant disease and identify potential disease risk factors in western China. METHODS The present retrospective study was conducted in 131 consecutive patients receiving 248 dental implants treated with implant-supported prostheses with a mean follow-up of 2.52 years. Several patient-related, implant-related, and oral hygiene maintenance factors were analyzed. RESULTS Peri-implant disease developed in 68 (51.91%) patients and 110 (44.35%) implants. The prevalence of peri-implant mucositis and peri-implantitis were 45.80% and 7.63%, respectively, at the subject level, and 36.69% and 7.66%, respectively, at the implant level. Multivariate analysis exhibited that male [odds ratio (OR) = 1.91; 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.02-3.57; p = 0.04], implant length < 10mm (OR = 7.87; 95% CI:1.62-38.46; p = 0.01), poor proximal contact of the prosthesis (OR = 1.90; 95% CI: 1.06-3.42; p = 0.03), tooth brushing once a day (OR = 3.11; 95% CI: 1.26-7.68; p = 0.04) and moderate periodontitis (OR = 13.00; 95% CI: 4.38-38.60; p < 0.01) were independent risk factors for peri-implant disease.

Abstract
Aim: The aim of this paper is to perform a retrospective assessment of the clinical performance of the complete oral rehabilitation of patients with bruxism treated with implants and teeth-supported veneered and non-veneered monolithic zirconia restorations with increased occlusal vertical dimension. Methods: In this retrospective follow-up study, 16 bruxer patients, mean age 59.5 ± 14.9 years, were treated with 152 veneered and 229 non-veneered monolithic zirconia and followed for a mean of 58.8 ± 18.8 months (range 1–8 years). The patients were examined clinically and radiographically, annually. Clinical data were extracted from the medical records. In the recall appointments, modified California Dental Association (CDA) criteria were used to evaluate the restorations. Implant and restoration survival and success rates were recorded and analyzed. Results: The cumulative survival rates of implants and restorations were 97.7% and 97.6%, respectively. Nine restorations were replaced: three due to horizontal tooth fractures, two because of implant failure and four had secondary caries. A total of 43 biologic and technical complications were recorded. In the veneered group, the predominant complication was minor veneer chipping (16.4%), which required polishing only (grade 1). In the non-veneered group, the main complication was open proximal contacts between the implant restorations and adjacent teeth (14.5%). Conclusions: The survival rates of restorations and implants in patients with bruxism are excellent, even though veneered zirconia restoration exhibited a high rate of minor veneer chipping, which required polishing only. The biologic complication of fractured single-tooth abutment may occur.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to assess retrospectively the survival and success rates of monolithic zirconia restorations supported by teeth and implants in bruxer versus non-bruxer patients. Methods: A total of 15 bruxer and 25 non-bruxer patients attended the recall appointment. The bruxer group (mean age of 61.2 ± 13.3 years and follow-up of 58.7 ± 16.8 months) were treated with 331 monolithic zirconia restorations, while the non-bruxer group, with a comparable mean age and follow-up time, were treated with 306 monolithic zirconia restorations. Clinical data were retrieved from the patients’ files. At the recall appointment, all supporting teeth and implants were examined for biological and technical complications, and the restorations were evaluated using modified California Dental Association (CDA) criteria. Data were statistically analyzed using survival analysis methods. A significance level of p < 0.05 was used. A total of 31 versus 27 biologic and technical complications were recorded in the bruxer and non-bruxer groups, respectively. No significant differences were found between the two groups regarding overall complications and survival rate. Regarding the type of complication, a significantly higher rate of veneered porcelain chipping (p = 0.045) was observed in the bruxer group. With regard to biological complications, the only complications that exhibited a borderline, although not significant, difference were three fractured teeth exclusively in the bruxer group (p = 0.051), which were replaced with implant-supported restorations. Within the limitations of this study, we conclude that there were no significant differences in the overall survival and success rates of the monolithic zirconia restorations in bruxer versus non-bruxer patients, although veneered zirconia restorations and single tooth abutments exhibited a higher rate of complications in the bruxer group.
