A source-imaging (low-resolution electromagnetic tomography) study of the EEGs from unmedicated men with schizophrenia

Efficient high resolution sLORETA in brain source localization

Objective. Estimation of the source location within the brain from electroencephalography (EEG) and magnetoencephalography measures is a challenging task. Among the existing techniques in the field, which are known as brain imaging methods, standardized low-resolution brain electromagnetic tomography (sLORETA) is the most popular method due to its simplicity and high accuracy. However, in this work we illustrate that sLORETA is still noisy and the additive noise is causing the blurry image. The existing pre-fixed/manual thresholding process after sLORETA can partially take care of denoising. However, this ad-hoc theresholding can either remove so much of the desired data or leave much of the noise in the process. Manual correction to avoid such extreme cases can be time-consuming. The objective of this paper is to automate the denoising process in the form of adaptive thresholding. Approach. The proposed method, denoted by efficient high-resolution sLORETA (EHR-sLORETA), is based on minimizing the error between the desired denoised source and the source estimates. Main results. The approach is evaluated using synthetic EEG and real EEG data. spatial dispersion (SD), and mean square error (MSE) are used as metrics to provide the quantitative performance of the method. In addition, qualitative analysis of the method is provided for real EEG data. This proposed model demonstrates advantages over the existing methods in sense of accuracy and robustness with SD and MSE comparison. Significance. EHR-sLORETA could have a significant impact on clinical studies with source estimation task, as it improves the accuracy of source estimation and eliminates the need for manual thresholding.

LORETA analysis of three-dimensional distribution of δ band activity in schizophrenia: relation to negative symptoms

We sought to determine if altered electroencephalography (EEG) activities, such as delta band activity, in specific brain regions are associated with psychotic symptoms. Data were obtained from 17 neuroleptic-naive patients with schizophrenia and age- and sex-matched 17 healthy control subjects. Low Resolution Brain Electromagnetic Tomography (LORETA) was used to generate current source density images of delta, theta, alpha, and beta activities. Localization of the difference in EEG activity between the two groups was assessed by voxel-by-voxel non-paired t-test of the LORETA images. Spearman's correlation coefficient was obtained to relate LORETA values of EEG current density in brain regions showing a significant between-group difference and psychopathology scores. Delta band activity, represented by LORETA current density, was greater for patients in the following areas; the left inferior temporal gyrus, right middle frontal gyrus, right superior frontal gyrus, right inferior frontal gyrus, and right parahippocampal gyrus. LORETA values for delta band activity in the above five brain regions were negatively correlated with negative, but not positive symptoms. The results of this study suggest the role for electrophysiological changes in some of the brain regions, e.g. prefrontal cortex, in the manifestation of negative symptoms.

EEG analysis of male to female transsexuals: discriminant function and source analysis

A small series of consecutive, unmedicated male to female transsexuals were studied before hormonal treatment and prior to reassignment surgery. Quantitative EEG and LORETA source localization in the Eyes Open and Eyes Closed conditions were carried out, and they were compared to sinistral/ambilateral male and female controls, as the transsexual group was overwhelmingly sinistral. Discriminant function analysis and source localization showed that the transsexual group was similar to female heterosexual controls, with increased sources in the right hemisphere in the fast frequencies.

Attenuated asymmetry of functional connectivity in schizophrenia: a high-resolution EEG study

The interhemispheric asymmetries that originate from connectivity-related structuring of the cortex are compromised in schizophrenia (SZ). Under the assumption that such abnormalities affect functional connectivity, we analyzed its correlate-EEG synchronization-in SZ patients and matched controls. We applied multivariate synchronization measures based on Laplacian EEG and tuned to various spatial scales. Compared to the controls who had rightward asymmetry at a local level (EEG power), rightward anterior and leftward posterior asymmetries at an intraregional level (1st and 2nd order S-estimator), and rightward global asymmetry (hemispheric S-estimator), SZ patients showed generally attenuated asymmetry, the effect being strongest for intraregional synchronization in the alpha and beta bands. The abnormalities of asymmetry increased with the duration of the disease and correlated with the negative symptoms. We discuss the tentative links between these findings and gross anatomical asymmetries, including the cerebral torque and gyrification pattern, in normal subjects and SZ patients.

Changes in EEG spectral power on perception of neutral and emotional words in patients with schizophrenia, their relatives, and healthy subjects from the general population

EEG correlates of impairments in the processing of emotiogenic information which might reflect a genetic predisposition to schizophrenia were sought by studying the dynamics of EEG rhythm powers on presentation of neutral and emotional words in 36 patients with schizophrenia, 50 of their unaffected first-degree relatives, and 47 healthy subjects without any inherited predisposition to psychoses. In controls, passive hearing of neutral words produced minimal changes in cortical rhythms, predominantly in the form of increases in the power levels of slow and fast waves, while perception of emotional words was accompanied by generalized reductions in the power of the alpha and beta(1) rhythms and regionally specific suppression of theta and beta(2) activity. Patients and their relatives demonstrated reductions in power of alpha and beta(1) activity, with an increase in delta power on hearing both groups of words. Thus, differences in responses to neutral and emotional words in patients and their relatives were weaker, because of increased reactions to neutral words. These results may identify EEG reflections of pathology of involuntary attention, which is familial and, evidently, inherited in nature. No reduction in reactions to emotiogenic stimuli was seen in patients' families.
