Critical health psychology in New Zealand: Developments, directions and reflections

We examine how critical health psychology developed in New Zealand, taking an historical perspective to document important influences. We discuss how academic appointments created a confluence of critical researchers at Massey University, how interest in health psychology arose and expanded, how the critical turn eventuated and how connections, both local and international, were important in building and sustaining these developments. We discuss the evolution of teaching a critical health psychology training programme, describe the research agendas and professional activities of academic staff involved and how this sustains the critical agenda. We close with some reflections on progress and attainment.

The rapid expansion of (mainstream) health psychology in France: Historical foundations

This article traces the historical evolution of ongoing theoretical debates in psychology in France from the 1940s until today. Its aim is to show how the conjunction of certain conditions led to a rapid expansion of American-derived mainstream health psychology during the 1980s. The authors describe the French context in the post-World War II period and outline the implementation of ‘clinical psychology in health settings’ in the 1950s, under the influence of Daniel Lagache. The strong critiques of the new psychology profession in the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s are examined. Our conclusion reflects upon future implications of ongoing rivalries between different approaches to psychology.

Psicologia da saúde crítica no contexto hospitalar

O texto apresenta uma discussão sobre a Psicologia da saúde no contexto hospitalar a partir de uma perspectiva histórica e ética, mostrando como o desenvolvimento desse campo foi caracterizado pelo surgimento de duas perspectivas: a Psicologia da saúde tradicional e a Psicologia da saúde crítica. O modelo de quatro abordagens à Psicologia da saúde é apresentado e reformulado com a inclusão do conceito de Psicologia sanitária, e a prática em Psicologia da saúde é discutida à luz do conceito de reflexividade. Por fim, alguns questionamentos derivados da Psicologia da saúde crítica são feitos à prática do psicólogo no contexto hospitalar.

Integrating sexuality into gynaecological consultations: gynaecologists' perspectives

There are currently few studies exploring doctors' personal perspectives on integrating sexuality into medical consultations. This study focuses on the views of gynaecologists on introducing, or not introducing, sexuality into their work. A total of 30 semi-structured interviews were conducted with gynaecologists in the French-speaking part of Switzerland. The thematic content analysis and computer-assisted lexical analysis (Alceste) on the interview transcripts highlighted four categories: perceptions and description of sexuality, patient's sexological history, training in sexology and perceived difficulties. It is observed that, above all, the 'medical dimension' characterises gynaecologists' perceptions. Of greater interest is our observation of disparities in gynaecologists' discussion of their practice, which is often the product of lay knowledge based on common sense and/or personal experience. Finally, the decision to integrate questions relating to sexuality seems to depend on non-medical factors such as the personal experience, interest or gender of the doctor.
