Energy value of rice, broken rice, and rice bran for broiler chickens by the regression method

The Energy Contents of Broken Rice for Lactating Dairy Cows

This study aimed to evaluate (1) the net energy for lactation of broken rice in dairy cows and (2) the effects of broken rice substituting in diets on feed intake, nutrient energy utilization, and milk production. An energy metabolism experiment was conducted using a respiration chamber system in four multiparous Holstein crossbred cows (88.6% Holstein × 11.4% Native Thai; body weight of 438 ± 16.0 kg; 70 ± 31 days in milk) according to a 4 × 4 Latin square design with four 21-d periods. The four dietary treatments included a basal diet substitution with broken rice at 0%, 12%, 24%, and 36%. Increasing the substitution rate of broken rice in the diet resulted in unaffected feed intake, milk yield and composition, and energy balance (p > 0.05); however, a linear increase in the digestibility of dry matter, organic matter, and neutral detergent fiber (p < 0.05). The estimated net energy for lactation of broken rice was 8.68 MJ/kg. The net energy requirement for maintenance was estimated at 504 kJ/kg of metabolic body weight. Our results indicated that broken rice is a good energy-feed resource and that increasing the proportion in the diet up to 36% had no adverse effect on dairy cows' production performance.

Screening and characterization of Bacillus velezensis LB-Y-1 toward selection as a potential probiotic for poultry with multi-enzyme production property

Bacillus spp. have gained increasing recognition as an option to use as antimicrobial growth promoters, which are characterized by producing various enzymes and antimicrobial compounds. The present study was undertaken to screen and evaluate a Bacillus strain with the multi-enzyme production property for poultry production. LB-Y-1, screened from the intestines of healthy animals, was revealed to be a Bacillus velezensis by the morphological, biochemical, and molecular characterization. The strain was screened out by a specific screening program, possessed excellent multi-enzyme production potential, including protease, cellulase, and phytase. Moreover, the strain also exhibited amylolytic and lipolytic activity in vitro. The dietary LB-Y-1 supplementation improved growth performance and tibia mineralization in chicken broilers, and increased serum albumin and serum total protein at 21 days of age (p < 0.05). Besides, LB-Y-1 enhanced the activity of serum alkaline phosphatase and digestive enzyme in broilers at 21 and 42 days of age (p < 0.05). Analysis of intestinal microbiota showed that a higher community richness (Chao1 index) and diversity (Shannon index) in the LB-Y-1 supplemented compared with the CON group. PCoA analysis showed that the community composition and structure were distinctly different between the CON and LB-Y-1 group. The beneficial genera such as Parasutterella and Rikenellaceae were abundant, while the opportunistic pathogen such as Escherichia-Shigella were reduced in the LB-Y-1 supplemented group (p < 0.05). Collectively, LB-Y-1 can be considered as a potential strain for further utilization in direct-fed microbial or starter culture for fermentation.

Nutritional quality and in vitro digestibility of fermented rice bran based on different types and doses of inoculants

Objective

The study was conducted to determine the effect of inoculants of different types and doses on the nutrient quality and in vitro digestibility of fermented rice bran.

Materials and Methods

The study was designed using a completely randomized design with a 3 × 3-factorial pattern. The first factor was the type of inoculum, consisting of Saccharomyces cerevisiae (SC), Effective Microorganism-4, and Saus Burger Pakan (SBP). The second factor is inoculum doses, which are as follows: levels 2%, 4%, and 6%. The variables measured included chemical composition, fiber fraction content, dry matter digestibility and organic matter digestibility.

Results

The results showed that the type of inoculation treatment and the doses of inoculation did not affect the dry matter (DM) content of fermented bran, and the organic matter content of fermented bran was only affected by the inoculation dose factor (p < 0.05). The highest crude protein and Extract Ether (EE) were obtained in the SBP inoculants, which increased linearly with increasing inoculation doses (p < 0.05). While a significant decrease (p < 0.05) occurred in crude fiber content. The cellulose, hemicellulose, lignin, acid detergent fiber (ADF), and neutral detergent fiber (NDF) fractions were significantly lower in the SBP treatment as the dose increased. The SBP inoculant type produced the highest DMD (p < 0.05) but showed a response that was not different from the SC inoculant treatment for OMD. Increasing inoculation doses of 2%, 4%, and 6% linearly increased the DMD and OMD of fermented bran (p < 0.05). Overall, inoculant application on fermented bran showed an interaction effect except for the components of DM, EE, ADF, NDF, and DMD of fermented bran.

Conclusions

It was concluded that the SBP at 6% and their combination resulted in the best chemical quality and digestibility of rice bran.

Validation of a 3-point model for the determination of energy values using the regression method in broiler chickens

Two experiments (Exp.) were conducted to validate a 3-point model for the regression method of determining ME, using canola meal (CM) and wheat as test ingredients (TI). Corn-soybean meal-based test diets (TD) contained 0, 100, 200, or 300 g/kg CM, added at the proportional expense of all energy contributing ingredients for Exp. 1, and 0, 150, 300, or 450 g/kg wheat for Exp. 2. For each Exp., 192 Cobb 500 male broiler chickens were weighed and allotted by BW to 1 of 4 treatments at d 21 post hatching in a randomized complete block design. Growth performance and metabolizability responses were evaluated for linear and quadratic effects using orthogonal contrasts, and ileal digestible energy (IDE), ME, and MEn of TI were determined by regressing the TI-associated energy against the dry matter intake of TI using a generalized linear model. Four data sets were used to determine ME, using all possible 3 and 4-point combinations of TD in each Exp. Increasing TI inclusion elicited linear decreases (P < 0.01) in the digestibility and metabolizability of DM and GE in the 2 studies. The ME of CM obtained from the 4 data sets ranged from 1,731 to 1,992 kcal/kg DM, however, excluding the highest concentration of CM produced the highest estimate of ME, whereas the other 3 sets ranged from 1,731 to 1,793 kcal/kg DM. The ME of wheat from the 4 data sets had a smaller range of 3,041 to 3,106 kcal/kg DM. Excluding the highest concentration of either TI produced higher standard errors for the estimate of ME compared to the other 3 sets (42 and 36% greater SE, respectively). Results for IDE and MEn were similar. These data indicate that there is no difference in the variation of estimates between the 3 and 4-point models, provided that the inclusion of the TI is adequate and both models represent the linearity and variability of responses.
