Abstract
Background: The focus of this qualitative research was to interview current and retired Gaelic games athletes to ascertain how athletes viewed concussion recognition and management. Methods: A grounded theory methodology design was utilised to investigate concussion recognition and management experiences of a cohort of Gaelic games athletes (n = 22). Data for the study were collected using a semi-structured interview format. Results: Two major themes were identified: (1) an inconsistent identification of concussion as an injury and the absence of standardised procedures for removal from play, and (2) the impact of athlete-driven decision making on concussion management. Concussions were experienced by all the participants on multiple occasions while playing Gaelic games. However, concussion recognition and removal rarely occurred, as many athletes chose not to disclose their injuries or self-managed their concussions. Conclusions: The recognition and management of concussions in Gaelic games are currently inadequate, and they may be posing significant risks to athletes' long-term health. This research highlights the need for more stringent protocols for concussion recognition and removal at pitch side. In addition, Gaelic games require a more objective injury management plan during acute and chronic concussion recovery.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim was to determine the awareness of and use of injury prevention exercise programmes (IPEPs) among adult Gaelic games players and to investigate Gaelic games players' attitudes to injury prevention and barriers and facilitators to successful IPEPs use. METHODS A recruitment email was sent to all clubs and county boards throughout Ireland (whose email was available online) and the survey was advertised on social media platforms. Adult players completed an anonymous survey, including awareness, use, and attitudes towards injury prevention and injuries. Frequencies and descriptive statistics were conducted, a chi-squared test was used to assess any differences in awareness and use of IPEPs, a Mann-Whitney U test was used to examine differences between groups for attitudes to injury prevention (men vs women; elite vs non-elite). RESULTS A third of players (32.4%) stated awareness of IPEPs. However, only 13.4% correctly identified one. A significantly greater number of men (35.7%) used IPEPs compared to women (26.5%) (p = 0.04). The Activate (65.5%) and GAA15 (32.5%) were most used. Players had a positive attitude towards injury prevention but agreed that injuries were an issue (68.2%) and stated that their coach didn't have enough knowledge how to use IPEPs was a large barrier (41.6%). CONCLUSION Despite this positive attitude to injury prevention and believing injuries are an issue, adoption remains low. Organisations/clubs should educate players on the benefits of using IPEPs and support structures put in place to gain greater implementation, which is critical to mitigating the risk of injury.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Maximal oxygen uptake (V̇O2max ) is a pivotal factor for aerobic endurance performance. Recently, aerobic high-intensity interval training (HIIT) was documented to be superior to sprint interval training (SIT) in improving V̇O2max in well-trained males. However, as mounting evidence suggests that physiological responses to training are sex-dependent, examining the effects of HIIT versus SIT on V̇O2max , anaerobic capacity, and endurance performance in females is warranted. METHODS We randomized 81 aerobically well-trained females (22 ± 2 years, 51.8 ± 3.6 mL∙kg-1 ∙min-1 V̇O2max ), training three times weekly for 8 weeks, to well-established protocols: (1) HIIT 4 × 4 min at ~95% of maximal aerobic speed (MAS), with 3 min active recovery (2) SIT 8 × 20 s at ~150% of MAS, with 10 s passive recovery (3) SIT 10 × 30 s at ~175% of MAS, with 3.5 min active recovery. RESULTS Only HIIT 4 × 4 min increased V̇O2max (7.3 ± 3.1%), different from both SIT groups (all p < 0.001). Anaerobic capacity (maximal accumulated oxygen deficit) increased following SIT 8 × 20 s (6.5 ± 10.5%, p < 0.05), SIT 10 × 30 s (14.4 ± 13.7%, p < 0.05; different from HIIT 4 × 4 min, p < 0.05). SIT 10 × 30 s resulted in eight training-induced injuries, different from no injuries following HIIT 4 × 4 min and SIT 8 × 20 s (p < 0.001). All groups improved long-distance (3000-meter) and sprint (300-meter) running performance (all p < 0.001). SIT protocols improved sprint performance more than HIIT 4 × 4 min (p < 0.05). Compared to previous male results, no increase in V̇O2max following SIT 8 × 20 s (p < 0.01), and a higher injury rate for SIT 10 × 30 s (p < 0.001), were evident. CONCLUSIONS In aerobically well-trained women, HIIT is superior to SIT in increasing V̇O2max while all-out treadmill running SIT is potentially more harmful.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Forward body lean and greater horizontal ground reaction force have been associated with being able to accelerate during running. However, kinematic features which may predict acceleration during the run-to-sprint transition have not been determined. The purpose of this study was to determine which kinematic changes occur in recreationally active adults and which kinematic features may predict greater acceleration during the run-to-sprint transition. METHODS Forty-seven healthy adults completed straight line running along a 30 m track by running in at ∼4 m.s-1. A minimum of 20 trials were completed, with 25 % triggering a light to signal the participant to accelerate as fast as possible. Step characteristics (velocity, length, duration, cadence) and kinematics (neck, trunk, hip, knee and ankle angles and excursions) were determined using a radar gun and inertial measurement units, respectively. ANOVA was used to determine the step-to-step differences and a multiple linear regression was used to determine the relationship between kinematics and acceleration. RESULTS There was an initial increase in trunk flexion angle during early acceleration (p < 0.001) with knee joint excursion significantly lower (p < 0.001) during loading and propulsion compared to the run-in steps. Greater acceleration was predicted using a stepwise linear regression by five variables including less neck flexion excursion and trunk flexion angle during swing of the 1st step, greater trunk flexion angle and extension excursion of the neck during propulsion of the 2nd step and greater hip flexion angle at foot strike of the 3rd step (r2 =0.804, p < 0.001). SIGNIFICANCE Faster acceleration was observed when participants transitioned from an upright posture to greater forward trunk lean in the early phase of acceleration. Training the run-to-sprint transition, which was shown to have the greatest increase in velocity over the first 5 m, may be encouraged as a sports specific exercise.

Abstract
Introduction Sport-related concussion (SRC) is a risk of collision sports such as women's rugby. To support appropriate SRC diagnosis and management, an understanding of the factors that encourage SRC disclosure is necessary. To date, research has focused on ascertaining individual player knowledge and attitudes towards SRC disclosure. Methods We chose to investigate the potential influence of group identification effects by examining the role of social identity on SRC disclosure in elite women's rugby. Seventeen elite players from the United Kingdom and Ireland were interviewed and their transcripts thematically analysed. Results The data highlighted that the players shared a very strong social identity as women in rugby and were acutely aware that their experiences were different to their male counterparts. The shared social identity had both positive and negative implications for SRC disclosure. The players interviewed did not feel comfortable disclosing their symptoms to their coach and often felt that medical staff either did not listen to them or were unavailable to them. Mediators such as communication, trust in medical teams, perceived pressure, positive injury management experience, and player role models were identified. Discussion This research could be utilised to inform sport psychology interventions to enhance SRC disclosure in elite women's rugby.

Abstract
High-quality movement patterns and high levels of mindfulness are thought to be beneficial in preventing sports injuries. Yoga is recommended in the field of athlete rehabilitation. This study investigated the effects of yoga intervention on functional movement patterns and mindfulness in collegiate athletes. It is a quasi-experimental study with a pre/post-test control design. The participants were divided into a yoga group and a control group. A Functional Movement Screen and the Mindful Attention Awareness Scale were used to assess participants' basic movement patterns and mindfulness before and after 12 weeks of yoga intervention (two classes per week, 90 min per class). The results show that the yoga group's FMS scores improved more compared to the control group [F(1,78) = 29.08, p < 0.001, ŋp2 = 0.27], and that the scores for the deep squat (ŋp2 = 0.4), shoulder mobility (ŋp2 = 0.17), and trunk stability pushup (ŋp2 = 0.36) improved substantially. The dysfunctional score ratio for deep squats (χ2 = 18.57, p < 0.001), shoulder mobility (χ2 = 26.90, p < 0.001), trunk stability pushup (χ2 = 17.07, p < 0.001), and rotatory stability (χ2= 38.29, p <0.001) decreased significantly compared with the control group, but there was no significant improvement in asymmetric movement patterns (χ2 = 0.75, p = 0.39). The mindfulness scores in the yoga group significantly exceeded those of the control group [F(1,78) = 13.56, p < 0.001, ŋp2 = 0.15]. These results suggest that yoga intervention can improve functional movement patterns and mindfulness levels, but further evidence is needed to determine whether yoga could positively influence sports injuries.

Abstract
Objectives To investigate the influence of sports/activity types and their distribution over the curriculum years on intracurricular injury risk differences between curriculum years and sexes in Physical Education Teacher Education (PETE) studies. Methods In a cohort study over 14 years (2000-2014), injuries reported at the medical facility of a Dutch vocational institute by PETE students who completed their full curriculum were registered. Intracurricular injury rates (IR) per 1000 hours and 95% CIs were calculated per sport, sex and curriculum year and compared with injury rate ratios (RR) and 95% CI. Exposure times per sports category per curriculum year were compared with the χ2 test. Results Intracurricular IR was highest for gymnastics, team ball sports and track and field (0.76-1.23, 95% CI 0.65 to 1.45). IRs were higher for female compared with male students (RR 2.38, 95% CI 1.97 to 2.87). Comparisons for all individual sports and for all three curriculum years showed the same pattern. IR for the first year was higher than for the second (RR 1.79, 95% CI 1.45 to 2.21) and third year (RR 2.74, 95% CI 2.13 to 3.54) with similar patterns for all sports categories. Over the curriculum years, exposure time distributions per sport showed small differences (p<0.001, Cramer's V=0.07). Conclusion Curriculum year, sex and sports types are risk factors to be independently targeted for preventive and rehabilitative measures in PETE studies. The nature and aetiology of injuries in mixed sports, and the adaption to increased loads in first-year and female PETE students, need further investigation.

Abstract
Objectives To determine sport-related concussion (SRC) incidence rates in female contact/collision sport. Design Systematic review following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis guidelines. Data sources Four databases (PubMed, SportsDiscus, Web of Science, CINAHL) were searched for data from 2012 to 2021. Eligibility criteria Studies reporting SRC incidence rates or the number of concussions and athletic exposures (AEs) per 1000 participating events or hours in healthy female contact and collision sport athletes of any age were included. Results The search yielded 8438 non-duplicate articles. Following screening, 19 were included in the analysis (median quality score=70%), with 8 reporting match or training incidence rates. Studies were primarily from US high school and collegiate populations; data are reported for eight sports. Rugby union reported the highest match SRC rates (8.2-16.11 per 1000 AE hours), followed by Gaelic football (5.21 per 1000 AE hours) and soccer (2.08-4.04 per 1000 AE events). Where available, match SRC rates were substantially higher than training and overall SRC rates. Conclusion Female sports such as rugby union, Gaelic football and soccer present the highest risk for SRCs within the available data. Previous research indicates a potentially greater injury burden for female athletes experiencing SRCs than their male counterparts. Thus, future research should analyse concussion knowledge and return-to-play protocols in these sports. Future research should also prioritise exploration of the gap in SRC rates within amateur sports, and data should be presented specifically in the context of athletic exposures (match vs training). Abstract
Fear avoidance and low confidence in their ability to return to sport can impede athletes' subsequent recovery and return to sport. This study aimed to identify fear avoidance and confidence in readiness to return to sport following injury in Irish collegiate athletes. Male (416) and female (256) athletes from 24 field-sport teams at one university were prospectively followed for one season. The Athlete Fear Avoidance Questionnaire (AFAQ) and pain on the Visual Analogue Scale was completed following a time-loss injury. Prior to return to sport, participants completed the AFAQ and the Injury Psychological Readiness to Return to Sport (I-PRRS). We recorded 179 injuries. Fear avoidance was evident post-injury (21.8 ± 6.7), and the mean total I-PRRS score was 48.4 ± 8.9. Those with severe injuries presented with higher fear avoidance and lower confidence. Higher pain was associated with greater fear avoidance following injury (r = 0.32, p < 0.0001), prior to return to sport (r = 0.38, p < 0.0001), and with lower confidence (r = -0.27, p < 0.0001). Low confidence and fear avoidance was identified, particularly in those with a severe injury or high pain levels. Identifying, and providing psychosocial support to athletes experiencing, these issues is recommended.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The extent of concussion injury in the rugby codes for women is unclear. OBJECTIVE Our aim was to review all published studies reporting concussion injuries from match and training participation in rugby codes and report the pooled data estimates for rugby league and union concussion injury epidemiology. METHODS We conducted a systematic literature analysis of concussion in rugby league and rugby union for published studies from January 1990 to July 2021. Data from 16 studies meeting the inclusion criteria were extracted for women's concussion injuries and were subsequently pooled. Costs from Accident Compensation Corporation (ACC) data were attributed to the results to provide cost estimates. RESULTS The pooled analysis match injury incidence of women's concussion was higher for rugby league (10.3 per 1000 match hours) than rugby 15 s (2.8 per 1000 match hours) or rugby 7 s (8.9 per 1000 match hours). There was a fourfold difference in the pooled incidence of concussion in women's rugby league (risk ratio [RR] 4.53, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.8-11.3]; p = 0.0001) when compared with rugby 15 s. There was also a ninefold higher risk of a concussion during match participation compared with training participation for women's rugby 15 s (RR 9.3, 95% CI 1.29-66.78; p = 0.0070). The total estimated costs for the concussions reported were NZ$1,235,101. For rugby 7 s, the pooled concussive injury burden was 33.2 days. CONCLUSIONS Our pooled analysis clarified the extent of concussion injury and the possible associated costs at several levels of the game for women's rugby codes. The pooled mean days lost because of concussions was 33 days. As this was considerably longer than the 7- to 10-day expected timeframe outlined in the Concussion in Sport Consensus statement, these guidelines need to be updated to include sex-specific differences.
