Self-reported bio-psycho-social factors partially distinguish patellar tendinopathy from other knee problems and explain patellar tendinopathy severity in jumping athletes: A case-control study

Football Was the Most Common Sport among 344 Consecutive Athletes Treated Surgically for Jumper's Knee at an International Tendon Clinic

Objectives

Jumper's knee, or proximal patellar tendinopathy, is commonly seen among athletes in leg explosive sports, and for a subgroup surgical treatment is needed. The aim of this study was to identify what type of sports were most frequent among athletes treated surgically for Jumper's knee at an international tendon clinic during a consecutive 13-year period.

Methods

The study included 344 consecutive patients (306 males, mean age 27 years, range 17-58; 38 females, mean age 24 years, range 18-44) from 21 different countries seeking help for therapy-resistant jumper's knee. There were 274 elite athletes, 168 being full-time professionals. All were diagnosed to have tendinopathy in the proximal patellar tendon and were operated on with ultrasound- and Doppler-guided arthroscopic shaving surgery.

Results

The single most common sport was football (n = 95, 28%), followed by rugby (n = 37, 11%) and handball (n = 32, 9%), with 117 (34%) playing at a professional level. The rest of the athletes participated in 17 other different elite sports and nine recreational sports (running/jogging, padel, squash, biking, gym training, bowling, cheerleading, dancing, and ultimate frisbee).

Conclusions

Football was the most common sport among patients requiring surgical treatment for jumper's knee, constituting 28% of all patients, and together with rugby and handball they constituted almost half of all patients. There was a wide sport distribution with 29 different team and individual sports represented.

Validity and Reliability of Turkish Version of the Munich Wrist Questionnaire in Patients With Wrist Problems

Evidence for the validity and reliability of the Turkish version of the Munich Wrist Questionnaire (MWQ), a patient reported outcome measurement tool (PROM) was evaluated. A total of 80 patients (54.1 ± 1.4 years, 68 females) with wrist problems were recruited. The MWQ was translated into Turkish (MWQ-TR). Criterion validity with Patient-Rated Wrist Evaluation (PRWE) and Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand (DASH) was tested by using Pearson's correlation coefficients. Intraclass correlations coefficient (ICC) was used to analyze the test-retest reliability. There was a moderate correlation (r = -0.49, p < 0.001) between MWQ-TR and DASH, while correlations were strong between MWQ-TR and PRWE (r = 0.69, p < 0.001). Test-retest reliability of MWQ-TR was moderate (ICC = 0.67, 95% CI 0.26-0.84). The MWQ-Turkish version demonstrated evidence for its validity and reliability to evaluate pain, work/daily life activities and function in people with wrist problems in a Turkish population.

Reliability and validity of the Turkish version of the patellofemoral pain and osteoarthritis subscale of the KOOS

BACKGROUND

Patellofemoral pain and patellofemoral osteoarthritis are highly prevalent knee disorders associated with pain and functional limitations. The subscale of the Knee Injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score for patellofemoral pain and osteoarthritis (KOOS-PF) was developed to evaluate patients with patellofemoral pain and osteoarthritis.

PURPOSE

This study aims to translate the KOOS-PF into Turkish and assess its measurement properties.

METHODS

The Turkish version of the KOOS-PF was tested for reliability and validity in a convenience sample of 55 patients with patellofemoral pain and/or osteoarthritis. Reliability analyses were conducted through a retest 7-14 days later with a subgroup of 35 patients. The KOOS-PF was compared with Kujala's Anterior Pain Scale (AKPS) and the Short Form-36 health survey (SF-36) to assess construct validity. Additionally, responsiveness analyses were performed on 29 patients who were followed up with a home-based exercise program three months later.

RESULTS

The Turkish version of KOOS-PF has high test-retest reliability (ICC2,1 = 0.96) and internal consistency (Cronbach's α = 0.91). It has a very good correlation with the AKPS (r = 0.77) and the SF-36 physical component summary (r = 0.64) with no floor or ceiling effects. Responsiveness is confirmed by a good correlation with the global rating of change score (r = 0.51). The minimal clinically important change is 16.5 points, and the minimal important difference is 10.2.

CONCLUSION

The Turkish version of the KOOS-PF is valid, reliable, and responsive for evaluating patients with patellofemoral pain and/or osteoarthritis.
