Inter-relationships between physical activity, body mass index, sedentary time, and cognitive functioning in younger and older adults: cross-sectional analysis of the Canadian Community Health Survey

Early Weight Status and Human Capital in Adulthood: A 32-Year Follow-Up of the 1970 British Cohort Study

Objectives: To prospectively evaluate the effects of early weight status (childhood and adolescence) and changes in obesity status on human capital in adulthood. Methods: We employed data from the 1970 Birth Cohort Study in the United Kingdom. Data on height and weight during childhood and adolescence, human capital variables in adulthood were collected from 2,444 participants. Human capital includes cognitive ability, non-cognitive skill, educational attainment and health status. Data were analyzed through linear regression and logistic regression models. Results: Our results showed that obesity during adolescence was negatively associated with cognitive ability (β = -0.83, p < 0.01), educational attainment (β = -0.49, p < 0.01), and some health outcomes; and that underweight in childhood also adversely affected educational attainment in females (β = -0.66, p < 0.05). In terms of changes in obesity status, becoming obese in adolescence negatively affected cognitive ability (β = -1.18, p < 0.01), educational attainment (β = -0.62, p < 0.05) and some health outcomes, remaining obese was associated with all adverse health outcomes. Conclusion: Our results suggest that obesity during adolescence negatively affects a range of human capital outcomes in adulthood, and adolescence is a critical period during which early obesity affects adult human capital.

The combined effect of physical activity and fruit and vegetable intake on decreasing cognitive decline in older Taiwanese adults

The factors associated with cognitive decline among older adults include physical activity and fruit and vegetable intake. However, the long-term effects of concomitant physical activity and fruit and vegetable intake are unknown. This 16-year longitudinal study explored the joint effect of mitigating cognitive decline in a cohort of older Taiwanese individuals. Five population-based surveys (Taiwan Longitudinal Survey on Aging [1999–2015]) involving 4440 respondents over 53 years old in 1999 were conducted. Cognitive function was assessed using the Short Portable Mental Status Questionnaire (SPMSQ). The demographic, socioeconomic, health-related, behavioral, and disease status covariates were adjusted in the regression analysis. Trends in cognitive decline were observed over 16 years. The risk of cognitive decline decreased by 63% when high physical activity and high fruit and vegetable intake were combined (odds ratio 0.37; 95% confidence interval 0.23–0.59), indicating a potential combined effect of physical activity and fruit and vegetable intake on mitigating cognitive decline. These personal actions are safe, effective, and economical approaches to health promotion and disease prevention.

Associations of daily activities measured by a pattern-recognition activity monitor with overall and abdominal obesity in older people: the IMPACT65+ study

OBJECTIVES

The aims of the present study were: (i) to analyze the associations of the time spent in daily activities (i.e., lie, recline, passive sit, active sit, stand, walk at slow pace, walk at average pace, walk at brisk pace, and other activities) with body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference (WC); and (ii) to examine how theoretically reallocating time between these daily activities is associated with BMI and WC.

METHODS

The sample included 437 older adults (288 women), aged 65 to 92 years, participating in the IMPACT65+ study. The time in daily activities was assessed by the Intelligent Device for Energy Expenditure and Activity (IDEEA). BMI and WC were measured following standardized procedures. Associations of daily activities with BMI and WC were examined using linear regression models adjusting for potential confounders. Isotemporal substitution models were performed to estimate the theoretical effect of replacing one activity with another activity while holding total time constant.

RESULTS

The time spent lying and reclining was associated with increased BMI and WC, while the time spent standing, walking at average pace, and walking at brisk pace was associated with decreased BMI and WC. Isotemporal substitution analyses revealed significant hypothetical reductions in BMI and WC when reallocating 15 min from lying or reclining to standing or walking at average pace. Moreover, replacing 15 min from any sedentary activity or light physical activity (except for walking at average pace) with an equal amount of time in walking at brisk pace was associated with lower BMI and WC.

CONCLUSIONS

This is the first study examining the activity specific and isotemporal associations of daily behaviors (considering body postures and movements) with overall and abdominal obesity in older people. The results could be used in the development of specific recommendations encouraging an active lifestyle in older people.
