Study of CR-39 and Makrofol efficiency for radon measurements

Time-efficient etching of LR-115 SSNTD film for indoor radon, thoron quantification

LR-115 Solid State Nuclear Track Detector (SSNTD) is commonly utilized for quantifying indoor radon-thoron levels, by tallying the tracks formed in the films by exposure to these gases. Conventionally, sodium hydroxide (NaOH) is used to etch LR-115 films for 90 min at 60°C. However, this study suggests a time-efficient alternative approach utilizing potassium hydroxide (KOH) as the etchant. In an initial investigation, the bulk etch rates of KOH were examined at different normalities and temperatures, revealing that KOH exhibited nearly double the bulk etch rates compared to NaOH. Subsequently, a specially designed controlled experiment was conducted to assess the efficacy of the technique by enumerating the tracks generated in the films. Both etchants demonstrated very similar track counts for identical controlled exposures, indicating the reliability of the method. A consistent behavior was observed in the real-case scenario of LR-115 films exposed indoors to alpha particles from radon and its decay products. In both experiments, the etching with KOH for 45 min gave track densities comparable to standard NaOH etching for 90 min, highlighting the time efficiency of this method. Investigations were carried out into track shape and size features, aspects crucial to the measurement technique, using microscopic imaging of samples treated with both etchants. Strikingly similar track shapes and sizes were observed, affirming the consistency in the track measurement technique. Collectively, these findings suggest that KOH etchant reduces the etching time, presenting itself as a time-efficient method for quantifying radon and thoron track density.

Amendment the surface structure and optical properties of Makrofol LT by low energy oxygen ion bombardment

Ion beam bombardment is a powerful technique to improve the surface properties of polymeric materials without changing the bulk properties. Herein, Makrofol LT films were bombarded with low energy of oxygen ions at different fluences ranging from 11 × 10¹⁷ to 44 × 10¹⁷ ions/cm². X-ray diffraction, FTIR spectroscopy, surface-roughness tester, ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, and Fluorescence spectroscopy were used to examine the change in the structure, chemical functional groups, alteration in surface roughness parameters, and photo-physical properties. The obtained results evidenced that the ordering and disordering structure of bombarded Makrofol LT films were influenced by ion beam irradiation according to the ion fluence. The FTIR spectroscopy of functional group examination revealed the possibility of the presence of sp²-carbon clusterization and amorphization. The surface roughness parameters increase as the ion fluences increase. Optical measurements exhibit a shift of absorption-edge towards the visible zone that correlated to the surface damage and the creation of CC bonds. The fluorescence spectra exhibit that the yield intensities decrease with increasing ion fluences. This refers to improvement in the radiative-recombination rate relative to non-radiative recombination. This is attributable to the growth of clusters, the increase of density states of the surface, and the increase in the surface roughness of the bombarded samples.

Updates to TRACK_TEST and TRACK_VISION Computer Programs

The computer programs TRACK_TEST and TRACK_VISION were previously developed to model profiles and optical appearances of tracks developed in solid-state nuclear track detectors. The programs were based on a track development model that involved the bulk etch rate Vb and the track etch rate Vt or the V function (i.e., Vt/Vb). The present work reported our work to update and modify these two programs. In the revised TRACK_TEST, two new V functions were added and enabled. Sample results for the CR-39 detector obtained using the three original and the two new V functions were compared. Discrepancies were within ~10% and <14% for incident alpha-particle energies of 1 MeV and >1 MeV, respectively. Another major revision of TRACK_TEST was to enable calculations for the Makrofol detector. In the revised TRACK_VISION, the two new V functions, as well as the option for the Makrofol detector, were also added. The experimental results on the Makrofol detectors were obtained (irradiated with 3.6-MeV alpha particles under normal incidence and then etched to achieve a removed detector thickness of 30 μm) for comparisons with the modeled results using the revised TRACK_VISION. The track diameters obtained from the experiment and model were 24.7 and 23.2 μm, respectively. Moreover, a bright area in the central parts, together with an outer dark ring, were present in both the simulated and experimental tracks. The track-opening diameters and the general optical appearances of the tracks were in good agreement.

Theoretical and experimental study of the LR-115 detector response in a non-commercial radon monitor

B.trαcks, a simulation program for SSNTD's sensitivity, has been developed to study the response of LR-115 (cellulose nitrate) and CR-39 (poly allyl glycol carbonate) nuclear track detectors. Detectors are located inside detector holders and are used for radon measurements. The program incorporates a variety of special features gathered together to achieve good agreement between theoretical approach and experimental results. The input parameters to study the detector response are radon exposure, geometry and dimensions of a detector holder (it can be cylindrical, conical or semi-spherical), entrance type for radon gas, detector type, and V function (four different functions were selected from literature). The output results are detector response and radon progeny distribution onto internal chamber walls. In this article, the response of the LR-115, which is placed inside a non-commercial-conductive radon monitor based on diffusion chambers called G2, was theoretically and experimentally studied. The common Monte Carlo simulation procedure and an alternative approach that replicates how monitors are exposed to different radon exposures were used as theoretical approaches. Experimental methodology was conducted in a radon test chamber from Italy (MI.AM s.r.l.). Comparison results of both theoretical and experimental methodology are presented and discussed. One of the major results, among others, shows that the monitor material (conductive or non-conductive) does not influence the LR-115 response.
