Metal halide perovskite polymer composites for indirect X-ray detection

Metal halide perovskites (MHPs) have emerged as a promising class of materials for radiation detection due to their high atomic numbers and thus high radiation absorption, tunable and efficient luminescent properties and simple solution processability. Traditional MHP scintillators, however, suffer from environmental degradation, spurring interest in perovskite-polymer composites. This paper reviews recent developments in these composites tailored for scintillator applications. It discusses various synthesis methods, including solution-based and mechanochemical techniques, that enable the formation of composites with enhanced performance metrics such as light yield, detection limit, and environmental stability. The review also covers the remaining challenges and opportunities in fabrication techniques and performance metric evaluations of this class of materials. By offering a comprehensive overview of current research and future perspectives, this paper underscores the potential of perovskite-polymer composites to revolutionize the field of radiation detection.

From linear to nonlinear Breit-Wheeler pair production in laser-solid interactions

During the ultraintense laser interaction with solids (overdense plasmas), the competition between two possible quantum electrodynamics (QED) mechanisms responsible for e^{±} pair production, i.e., linear and nonlinear Breit-Wheeler (BW) processes, remains to be studied. Here, we have implemented the linear BW process via a Monte Carlo algorithm into the QED particle-in-cell (PIC) code yunic, enabling us to self-consistently investigate both pair production mechanisms in the plasma environment. By a series of two-dimensional QED-PIC simulations, the transition from the linear to the nonlinear BW process is observed with the increase of laser intensities in the typical configuration of a linearly polarized laser interaction with solid targets. A critical normalized laser amplitude about a_{0}∼400-500 is found under a large range of preplasma scale lengths, below which the linear BW process dominates over the nonlinear BW process. This work provides a practicable technique to model linear QED processes via integrated QED-PIC simulations. Moreover, it calls for more attention to be paid to linear BW pair production in near future 10-PW-class laser-solid interactions.

Nanosensitizer-mediated unique dynamic therapy tactics for effective inhibition of deep tumors

X-ray and ultrasound waves are widely employed for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes in clinic. Recently, they have been demonstrated to be ideal excitation sources that activate sensitizers for the dynamic therapy of deep-seated tumors due to their excellent tissue penetration. Here, we focused on the recent progress in five years in the unique dynamic therapy strategies for the effective inhibition of deep tumors that activated by X-ray and ultrasound waves. The concepts, mechanisms, and typical nanosensitizers used as energy transducers are described as well as their applications in oncology. The future developments and potential challenges are also discussed. These unique therapeutic methods are expected to be developed as depth-independent, minimally invasive, and multifunctional strategies for the clinic treatment of various deep malignancies.

Perovskite materials: from single crystals to radiation detection

Pb- and Bi-based perovskite materials have high potential for detecting ionizing radiation but an enhanced research effort is needed to achieve large-size, high-performance single crystals at a competitive cost to accelerate this development.

Inorganic, Organic, and Perovskite Halides with Nanotechnology for High–Light Yield X- and γ-ray Scintillators

Trends in scintillators that are used in many applications, such as medical imaging, security, oil-logging, high energy physics and non-destructive inspections are reviewed. First, we address traditional inorganic and organic scintillators with respect of limitation in the scintillation light yields and lifetimes. The combination of high–light yield and fast response can be found in Ce 3 + , Pr 3 + and Nd 3 + lanthanide-doped scintillators while the maximum light yield conversion of 100,000 photons/MeV can be found in Eu 3 + doped SrI 2 . However, the fabrication of those lanthanide-doped scintillators is inefficient and expensive as it requires high-temperature furnaces. A self-grown single crystal using solution processes is already introduced in perovskite photovoltaic technology and it can be the key for low-cost scintillators. A novel class of materials in scintillation includes lead halide perovskites. These materials were explored decades ago due to the large X-ray absorption cross section. However, lately lead halide perovskites have become a focus of interest due to recently reported very high photoluminescence quantum yield and light yield conversion at low temperatures. In principle, 150,000–300,000 photons/MeV light yields can be proportional to the small energy bandgap of these materials, which is below 2 eV. Finally, we discuss the extraction efficiency improvements through the fabrication of the nanostructure in scintillators, which can be implemented in perovskite materials. The recent technology involving quantum dots and nanocrystals may also improve light conversion in perovskite scintillators.
