Abstract
Herein, three different recipes of multi-component hydrogels were synthesized by e-beam irradiation. These hydrogels were obtained from aqueous polymer mixtures in which different proportions of bovine collagen gel, sodium carboxymethylcellulose (CMC), poly(vinylpyrrolidone), chitosan, and poly(ethylene oxide) were used. The cross-linking reaction was carried out exclusively by e-beam cross-linking at 25 kGy, a dose of irradiation sufficient both to complete the cross-linking reaction and effective for hydrogel sterilization. The hydrogels developed in this study were tested in terms of physical and chemical stability, mechanical, structural, morphological, and biological properties. They are transparent, maintain their structure, are non-adhesive when handling, and most importantly, especially from the application point of view, have an elastic structure. Likewise, these hydrogels possessed different swelling degrees and expressed rheological behavior characteristic of soft solids with permanent macromolecular network. Morphologically, collagen- and CMC based-hydrogels showed porous structures with homogeneously distributed pores assuring a good loading capacity with drugs. These hydrogels were investigated by indirect and direct contact studies with Vero cell line (CCL-81™, ATCC), demonstrating that they are well tolerated by normal cells and, therefore, showed promising potential for further use in the development of drug delivery systems based on hydrogels.

Abstract
In the present paper, hydrogels based on acrylic acid (20%), sodium alginate (0.5%) and poly(ethylene oxide) (0.1%) were obtained by electron beam irradiation at room temperature with doses between 5 and 20 kGy, using potassium persulfate in concentrations up to 0.3% as a reaction initiator. The influence of initiator concentration and irradiation dose on hydrogel network parameters, swelling and deswelling behavior, gelation and degradation points, structure and morphology were investigated. Cross-link density increased with the irradiation dose and initiator addition, except at 20 kGy. The gel fraction was over 87.0% in all cases. Swelling experiments in distilled water showed swelling degrees of 40,000% at an irradiation dose of 5 kGy when a concentration of 0.1% initiator was added. A relationship between the swelling degree and irradiation dose, cross-linking degree (that increases from 0.044 × 102 to 0.995 × 102 mol/cm3) and mesh size (that decreases from about 220 nm to 26 nm) was observed. The addition of only 0.1% of PP led to the obtaining of hydrogels with a swelling degree of 42,954% (about 430 g/g) at an irradiation dose of 5 kGy and of 7206% (about 62 g/g) at 20 kGy, which are higher percentages than those obtained in the same irradiation conditions but without PP.

Abstract
Nanocomposite hydrogels were prepared by gamma-radiation copolymerization of poly (vinyl pyrrolidone) (PVP)/sodium alginate (AG) in the presence of silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs). The effect of irradiation dose and Ag NPs content on the gel content and swelling characters of PVP/AG/Ag NPs copolymers was investigated. In addition, the structure-property behavior of the copolymers was characterized by IR spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and x-ray diffraction (XRD). The drug uptake-release characters of PVP/AG/silver NPs copolymers, taking Prednisolone as a model drug, were studied. The study showed that the appropriate dose of gamma irradiation to achieve homogeneous nanocomposites hydrogel films and the highest swelling in water was 30 kGy, regardless of composition. The introduction of Ag NPs up to 5 wt % improved the physical properties and enhanced the drug uptake-release characters.

Abstract
Nowadays, the degradation of agricultural soil due to various factors should be a major concern for everyone. In this study, a new sodium alginate-g-acrylic acid-based hydrogel was developed simultaneously by cross-linking and grafting with accelerated electrons to be used as soil remediation. The effect of irradiation dose and NaAlg contents on the gel fraction, network and structural parameters, sol-gel analysis, swelling power, and swelling kinetics of NaAlg-g-AA hydrogels have been investigated. It was demonstrated that NaAlg hydrogels show significative swelling power that is greatly dependent on their composition and irradiation dose; they keep the structure and are not degraded in different pH conditions and different water sources. Diffusion data revealed a non-Fickian transport mechanism (0.61-0.99) also specific to cross-linked hydrogels. The prepared hydrogels were proved as excellent candidates in sustainable agriculture applications.

Abstract
The development of an ideal hydrogel wound dressing with excellent characteristics is currently a significant demand in wound therapy. The ideal hydrogel wound dressing must provide a moist environment between the wound and the dressing, promote wound healing, absorb excess exudate and toxins, be completely sterile, and not adhere to the wound. The evolution and current status of research on hydrogel wound dressings obtained exclusively through production by ionizing radiation are discussed in this paper review, along with the preparation methods, properties, standard characterization techniques, and their applications in wound dressing. First, we described the methods for synthesizing hydrogel wound dressings with ionizing radiation. Then, standard methods of characterization of hydrogel wound dressings such as gel fraction, swelling degree, sol-gel analysis, rheological properties, morphology, moisture retention capability, and water vapor transmission rate have been investigated. In the end, specific attention was paid to the drug release, antibacterial performance, and cytotoxicity of hydrogels. Moreover, the application of hydrogel in regenerative medicine as wound healing dressing was covered.

Abstract
We report on the successful preparation of wet dressings hydrogels based on Chitosan-Poly(N-Vinyl-Pyrrolidone)-Poly(ethylene glycol)-Poly(acrylic acid) and Poly(ethylene oxide) by e-beam cross-linking in weakly acidic media, to be used for rapid healing and pain release of infected skin wounds. The structure and compositions of hydrogels investigated according to sol-gel and swelling studies, network parameters, as well as FTIR and XPS analyses showed the efficient interaction of the hydrogel components upon irradiation, maintaining the bonding environment while the cross-linking degree increasing with the irradiation dose and the formation of a structure with the mesh size in the range 11–67 nm. Hydrogels with gel fraction above 85% and the best swelling properties in different pH solutions were obtained for hydrogels produced with 15 kGy. The hydrogels are stable in the simulated physiological condition of an infected wound and show appropriate moisture retention capability and the water vapor transmission rate up to 272.67 g m−2 day−1, to ensure fast healing. The hydrogels proved to have a significant loading capacity of ibuprofen (IBU), being able to incorporate a therapeutic dose for the treatment of severe pains. Simultaneously, IBU was released up to 25% in the first 2h, having a release maximum after 8 h.

Abstract
Hydrogels are materials with wide applications in several fields, including the biomedical and pharmaceutical industries. Their properties such as the capacity of absorbing great amounts of aqueous solutions without losing shape and mechanical properties, as well as loading drugs of different nature, including hydrophobic ones and biomolecules, give an idea of their versatility and promising demand. As they have been explored in a great number of studies for years, many routes of synthesis have been developed, especially for chemical/permanent hydrogels. In the same way, stimuli-responsive hydrogels, also known as intelligent materials, have been explored too, enhancing the regulation of properties such as targeting and drug release. By controlling the particle size, hydrogel on the micro- and nanoscale have been studied likewise and have increased, even more, the possibilities for applications of the so-called XXI century materials. In this paper, we aimed to produce an overview of the recent studies concerning methods of synthesis, biomedical, and pharmaceutical applications of macro-, micro, and nanogels.

Hydrogels Obtained via γ-Irradiation Based on Poly(Acrylic Acid) and Its Copolymers with 2-Hydroxyethyl Methacrylate. APPLIED SCIENCES-BASEL 2020. Abstract
Hydrogels containing both carboxyl and hydroxyl functional groups have been prepared by γ-irradiation of either aqueous solutions of acrylic acid (AA) and mixtures of AA and 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) in different ratios, or aqueous solutions of poly(AA), PAA, and poly(AA-co-HEMA) obtained via solution polymerization. A higher absorbed dose is required in order to prepare hydrogels from monomer solutions, compared with those from polymer solutions. The range for the absorbed doses was chosen so that the probability of crosslinking reactions is higher than that of degradation ones. As the radiation energy deposited in a sample increases, the equilibrium swelling degree and the average molar mass between crosslinks diminishes. Chemical transformations induced by radiation were investigated by means of FTIR spectroscopy and thermal analysis of polymers before and after irradiation. For all these systems, the formation of a three-dimensional network enhances the glass transition temperature and thermal stability, but a further increase in the crosslinking degree may have the reverse effect on the glass transition temperature. Depending on the preparation protocol and/or hydrogel composition, superabsorbent materials that can bind different compounds throughout side functional groups may be obtained.

Abstract
Gamma radiation was used to prepare blend hydrogels from poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and low ratios of methylcellulose (MC). The structure-property behavior was characterized by IR spectroscopy, gel fraction, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and swelling at room temperature and different pH values. The PVA/MC hydrogels were used as a carrier for doxycycline hyclate (DOX-h) drug. The results showed that the gel fraction of PVA/MC hydrogels decreased greatly with increasing the ratio of MC in the initial feeding solution. The PVA/MC hydrogels displayed pH-sensitive swelling character. The drug uptake-release study indicated that PVA/MC hydrogels possessed controlled release behavior and that the release process depends on pH. In this respect, the release of DOX-h drug was significant in alkaline medium.
