Synthesis of Metallic Nanostructures Using Ionizing Radiation and Their Applications

This paper reviews the radiation-induced synthesis of metallic nanostructures and their applications. Radiolysis is a powerful method for synthesizing metallic nanoparticles in solution and heterogeneous media, and it is a clean alternative to other existing physical, chemical, and physicochemical methods. By varying parameters such as the absorbed dose, dose rate, concentrations of metallic precursors, and nature of stabilizing agents, it is possible to control the size, shape, and morphology (alloy, core-shell, etc.) of the nanostructures and, consequently, their properties. Therefore, the as-synthesized nanoparticles have many potential applications in biology, medicine, (photo)catalysis, or energy conversion.

One-pot synthesis of gold nanorods via autocatalytic growth of sonochemically formed gold seeds: the effect of irradiation time on the formation of seeds and nanorods

A one-pot synthesis for gold nanorods was developed using sonochemical reduction of gold ions in an aqueous solution in the presence of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide, silver nitrate, and ascorbic acid, where we focused on the autocatalytic growth of gold seeds formed by ultrasonic irradiation for short times. In growth experiments with these sonochemically formed gold seeds, sigmoidal shape growth curves were observed, and the induction period before growth began was longer for shorter irradiation times. This result indicated that the number of sonochemically formed gold seeds increased with increasing irradiation time. The average aspect ratio of the gold nanorods produced changed from 2.0 at an irradiation time of 0.5min to 3.6 at 15min. The gold nanorods produced were longer and wider when the irradiation time was shorter.

Functional gold nanorods: synthesis, self-assembly, and sensing applications

Gold nanorods have received much attention due to their unique optical and electronic properties which are dependent on their shape, size, and aspect ratio. This article covers in detail the synthesis, functionalization, self-assembly, and sensing applications of gold nanorods. The synthesis of three major types of rods is discussed: single-crystalline and pentahedrally-twinned rods, which are synthesized by wet chemistry methods, and polycrystalline rods, which are synthesized by templated deposition. Functionalization of these rods is usually necessary for their applications, but can often be problematic due to their surfactant coating. Thus, general strategies are provided for the covalent and noncovalent functionalization of gold nanorods. The review will then examine the significant progress that has been made in controllable assembly of nanorods into various arrangements. This assembly can have a large effect on measurable properties of rods, making it particularly applicable towards sensing of a variety of analytes. Other types of sensing not dependent on nanorod assembly, such as refractive-index based sensing, are also discussed.

Green synthesis of well-dispersed gold nanoparticles using Macrotyloma uniflorum

The synthesis of metal nanoparticles of different sizes, shapes, chemical composition and controlled monodispersity is an important area of research in nanotechnology because of their interesting physical properties and technological applications. Present work describes an eco-friendly method for the synthesis of spherical gold nanoparticles using aqueous extract of Macrotyloma uniflorum. The effects of quantity of extract, temperature and pH on the formation of nanoparticles are studied. The nanoparticles are characterized by UV-visible spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and FTIR analysis. The high crystallinity of nanoparticles with fcc phase is evident from HRTEM images, SAED and XRD patterns. Synthesized nanoparticles have size in the range 14-17nm. FTIR spectrum indicates the presence of different functional groups present in the bio-molecule capping the nanoparticles. The possible mechanism leading to the formation of gold nanoparticles is suggested.

Rapid synthesis of gold nanorods using a one-step photochemical strategy

Rapid synthesis of gold nanorods of controlled dimensions is one of the desired aspects of nanotechnology as a result of the potential of these nanomaterials for biomedical applications. The synthesis of gold nanorods has been achieved using a photoinitiator as an instant source of ketyl radicals, which allows the synthesis of gold nanorods in minutes. This is the first report providing a one-step synthesis of nanorods of controlled dimensions in 20-30 min using photoinitiator I-2959 as a source of ketyl radicals. Furthermore, the role of UV intensity, the concentration of silver ions, and the presence of cosolvents and a cosurfactant have been studied in detail in an effort to produce nanorods with controlled dimensions in higher yields. The role of acetone in nanorod synthesis has been explored in detail, and it has been demonstrated that, for the photochemical synthesis of nanorods using a photoinitiator, acetone is not a critical component and can be replaced by other water-miscible solvents, thus the successful synthesis of nanorods in tetrahydrofuran (THF) has been demonstrated. It has also been found that a cosurfactant and an organic solvent are not required for the synthesis of nanorods; however, their presence is found to improve the monodispersity of nanorod samples, in addition to providing a higher yield.

Tailored Au nanorods: optimizing functionality, controlling the aspect ratio and increasing biocompatibility

Monodisperse gold nanorods with high aspect ratio were synthesized by x-ray irradiation. Irradiation was first used to stimulate the creation of seeds. Afterward, nanorod growth was stimulated either by chemical reduction or again by x-ray irradiation. In the last case, the entire process took place without reducing agents. The shape of the final products could be controlled by modulating the intensity of the x-ray irradiation during the seed synthesis. In turn, the nanorod aspect ratio determines the absorption wavelength of the nanorods that can thus be optimized for different applications. Likewise, the aspect ratio influences the uptake of the nanorods by HeLa cells.
